Update (9th Oct, 14:20 BST): Famitsu has now shared a selection of clear images of the new Pokémon and a first-look trailer has appeared (above). In addition, we now have more info regarding Galarian Ponyta's type and Pokédex info.
Check it all out below.
Original Article (9th Oct, 10:45 BST): If you stuck around to watch the entire 24 hours of the Pokémon livestream last week (if you did, we salute your dedication), you'll have spotted a new monster set to appear in Pokémon Sword and Shield. In the office, we immediately started to call it the 'lovely sparkly candyfloss horse', but fans decided that it was probably a Galarian form of Ponyta instead.
As it happens, they were absolutely right (although we still prefer our name for it). A scan of the upcoming issue of Famitsu has been spotted online, showing off official artwork of Galarian Ponyta next to its regular form. It has a new ability called Pastel Veil and will be exclusive to Pokémon Shield.
We'll make sure to update our list of all the version-exclusive Pokémon in Sword and Shield; feel free to check that over if you're still undecided on which version to pick up.
Before you go, though, here's a quick look at some new images and Pokédex info:

was there (even on your live blog)
kinda knew (and feared, since Sword is pre-ordered and awaited) this would be a shiled one seeing they announced sirfetchd previously.
Hope these games turn out to be even better than the current hype, damn these look cool
Better idea: sell 1 version of the game rather than 2 barely different versions in an attempt to grab more cash from double dippers.
It's a tactic I would expect EA and Ubisoft to be doing...
@Tao
This is literally what they've been doing since the original Red and Blue versions.
It was done with actually trading and playing with other people in mind, not making you buy two copies of a game. That said, the past couple of generations have been incentivizing that, collector's packs and that sort of thing.
From the looks of the upper right corner of the scan, Galarian Ponyta is either Fairy type or Psychic type. (My money is on Fairy.)
I was leaning towards Pokémon Sword, but how can you not have Lovely Sparkly Candyfloss Horse on your team? 😩
My Little Ponyta. >.>
Looks like the people getting Sword are stuck with...
removes glasses and looks at camera
...a lame duck
canned laughter. As the credits roll I put my glasses back on
A fairy form of Ponyta and the Tyranitar line? Shield it is for me then.
I wanted to take Sword because I love Zacian... Why, just why this Ponyta has to be exclusive to the other version?! Argh... I want it so bad, I don't want the duck...
I want this Ponyta but I'm leaning towards Sword. Good thing internet trading is a thing nowadays.
I'm getting both but I think I will play through Shield first.
Everyone knows that trading is a thing right?
Really hoping there’ll be Wonder Trade that’s always a lot of fun like when I got a lv50 shiny right at the start of S&M.
@TJWorks
That's the official color for Fairy Type.
I'm still gonna get Sword. I really want to get Hydreigon. My friend is getting Shield so we'll probably trade each other the Sirfetch'd and the Galarian Ponyta along w/ the other exclusives.
Gah, I really wanted Sword for Zacian, but now that both Goodra and Galarian Ponyta are Shield exclusive...
I’m not sure yet. I still have a month to decide, lol.
I believe this officially tips the scales in Shield’s favour for me. My partner and I are getting both versions in release next month, and we were still undecided on who gets which version, but since he loves Sirfetch’d and Ponyta is one of my favourite pokemon, I think we finally have a verdict.
@marandahir It's hard to tell from the current scan size, as both Fairy and Psychic types use a distinct pink.
@MH4
I'd still get Sword for Zacian, because you're only going to get one legendary per game, as opposed to the other version exclusives which can be caught, bred, and traded.
It's official name is actually "My Little Ponyta".
Got both editions ordered as was waiting on if any more version exclusives would come about, and a Galarian Ponyta is tipping the scales onto Shield (plus, it has the Tyrannita line)
24 hours just for a Ponyta is not worth it
Darn it, GF. I always get the "first" version of each pair. I have for twenty years now! (Red, Gold, Ruby, etc.). Now I actually have to get Shield instead because I must have Galarian Ponyta! (and I mean, I want to be able to run into them, not just trade for one)
As an American hearing "Candy Floss" just makes me shudder as I imagine instant tooth decay. Cotton Candy sounds much more friendly to me.
Now I'm honestly curious about how Rapidash will look like...
Will it grow wings like a Pegasus? Or Fairy wings maybe? * w *
@Tao 1998 called 😒 😄 👍
@BakaKnight youtuber AustinJohnPlays made a video about a 4chan leak that mentioned galarian ponyta and it's evolution before the livestream occured
Wait... why is it Psychic?
So glad this is a shield exclusive! I’ve always went with the “red” versions of games ever since the original Red. Ponyta/Rapidash is among my favorite Pokémon so this is great news for me. Hopefully sword gets some other cool ones too.
Also I have that double pack preordered so really let me have ‘em all!
@martynstuff dude stop it 😂
I think it's the first regional variant to have a whole new classification as well.
When a 24 hour livestream is made to show one damn pokemon that's a galarian form and it's exclusive to one version, thanks game freak
@TJWorks @marandahir It specifically says Psychic in the bottommost image.
Guess ordering shield is paying off!
Right when I had my heart set on sword
@Krisi I was surprised by the Psychic typing as well; I mean, Fairy is newer and there are less Pokémon with that typing.
@BakaKnight I was comvinced Ponyta would be Fairy and Rapidash would grow wings, become a full-on unicorn, and be Fairy/Flying.
and I preordered the right version
@link3710 We commented earlier when we only had the Japanese magazine scan this morning. The official Pokemon site didn't update til just recently.
@Krisi
The same question of why Sodowudo is a Rock type? XD
.
Well, I know now that nickname(s) will have my Galar Ponyta, XD
@Tao
Ever since Generation IV and the Global Trade System, version exclusives really haven't been an issue. Sure, there are the "trading my Rattata for Mew" folks, but I've never had an issue trading one version exclusive for another.
The hair is pretty heavy-handed, could use a slight tone down in volume. Too much shampoo!
@clvr Yap, I was thinking something similar, but now that the news got updated... Psychic? For real?
They designed a unicorn made of rainbow and it's not a fairy, I'm so confused @_@
@SakuraHaruka That's because it's not a tree, just disguises itself as one, hence the name Sudowoodo, as in pseudo wood(o).
Seems Like the copy of aloan vulpix..
Farfetch'd is better so I'll stick with Sword.
@Krisi
However, looks or no looks as a tree?, Many people, who don't know about Sudowoodo, will tell you that is a tree, or, a Pokemon Grass type.
Because Galar Ponyta has pastel/rainbow colors, don't mean that it's a Fairy type, also, its horn has power, a tip of because is Phychic, but, well; not all is as we see.
So Shield gets an adorable unicorn, and Sword gets a dumb bird...great...
@link3710
My bad. The color of the scan really looked like the Fairy color. Must have been desaturated.
Also surprised that its Psychic, as this sort of magical or faerie creature is standard Fairy thing while Psychic usually is more like witchcraft, wizardry, paranormal, and alien/space life forms. I guess there's a definite overlap between the types areas, but…
@Tao wow salt! dude dont like it buy the version you want theyve been doing this generation one
@ryancraddock i picked shield right away in february nice to win one!
@Nonoo thats why you choose shield i chose it in february hahah
@TJWorks @marandahir @Trikeboy : Galarian Ponyta is Psychic type. The scan reads "Esper" which is what the Psychic type is known as in Japan. I was surprised as I was expecting it to be a fairy type as it resembles a unicorn.
My comment was left before the typing was revealed.
I'm getting shield because of sliggoo, but it's good to know that ponyta is a shield exclusive over sirfetchd. I'd rather have a cute horse than a duck.
@Fandabidozi there is, but it's now known as Surprise Trade.
@RupeeClock "theyve been doing it for ages!!!"
Yea, I was there when the original games released. That doesn't make it any better.
It worked back then because of the lack of internet but now they're just desperately trying to justify having two versions for double dip customers, usually with something stupid like Sun/Moons 12 hour difference or having more and more exclusive content yet so neither is the 'full version' yet not enough to warrant buying both.
Not to mention the double packs theyve done for the past couple games. I doubt think they expected people to buy both versions years ago, now they're basically insentiviaing it.
I thought you always had to trade in pokemon games? Is that also out of the window?
