Grezzo has been busy releasing remasters of certain Zelda games for a number of years now and most recently helped out with the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening on Switch. Ever since we saw the charming diorama-like graphics in this upcoming release, it's made us wonder what other retro Zelda games would look like, if they were given a 3D makeover.
Obviously, we're not alone, either, as a talented individual who goes by the alias BlobVanDam online has been working on recreating the iconic Super Nintendo title The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past in the Unity engine. The 3D animator started the project back in April this year after hearing "a rumour" there would be A Link To The Past remake released in the future. Since then, he's made quite a lot of progress. Take a look below:
The new version of Link's Awakening by Nintendo EPD and Grezzo is supposedly running on the Unreal Engine. According to Digital Foundry, this is the same engine as the one Yoshi's Crafted World used. To see more of BlobVanDam's work, check out his Twitter and YouTube.
What do you think of the above efforts in the Unity Engine? Would you like to see a more official Link To The Past remake in the future? Leave a comment below.

Wow this looks so professional!
I love it!
That's nice and all but will probably just get shut down.
this is gonna feel so loose and floppy to play
ALTTP is one of the best Zelda’s and a remake would be amazing!
Looks really cool so far. If only it wasn't at risk of being shutdown.
Nintendo should look to hire these guys rather than sending their usual cease and desist stuff. I defend Nintendo as having the right to do that, but that doesn't mean I think it's the best choice to do that. If I were Nintendo I'd look at this as one heck of a job application.
The only reason people do this is because they know their name will become big news when Nintendo eventually takes this fan project down, which they will.
While I would enjoy a remake of A Link to the Past in this style, eventually it'll just look more like A Link Between Worlds so not sure if I like that. Now if they could remake A Link to the Past (or A Link Between Worlds, Minish Cap, or any of the Oracle games) in the style of Twilight Princess, Breath of the Wild, or that one Zelda demo Nintendo once made for the Wii U then we're talking.
People never learn, if you want your game out there wait till its done.
I soooooo wish this was coming out rather than Link’s Awakening. A Link to the Past is still one of my top 3 LoZ titles of all time.
Original looks better
Instead of yust schutting it down, I whould get to get in contact with this guy, what a tallent
Person: *makes a fan project on a Nintendo IP.
Nintendo: Wait, that’s illegal.
Edit: I didn’t realize this, but Link is T posing in the thumbnail.
@kopaka Significantly. Is that even a question?
@BAN of course it is. If the 30 y.o. original looks better, than it raises the question, do we need a remaster/remake, that looks worse?
Why would you not make his hair pink, though?
Cease & Desist in 3... 2... 1...
@Heavyarms55 For real. I'll never get over the fact that the best Sonic game in at least a decade, Sonic Mania, was developed with Sega's blessing and resources by one of the biggest fans of the original Sonic titles. Stuff like this isn't just a great job application; it is a straight up statement of "hey [company]. I love your games so much that I'm willing to make tribute titles with my own free time and zero budget". Stuff like Cadence of Hyrule (not to mention musical contributions by huge Nintendo nerds like FamilyJules) has me somewhat optimistic about how Nintendo handles things going forward but time will tell I guess.
I'd love to see this game officially remade. The original feels super stiff and clunky to me, so a remake would be very welcome.
....These people just never learn, do they?
@kopaka I think a professionally made remake in the style of the new Link’s Awakening remake would look good enough to warrant its existence. But I wouldn’t think of it as looking better, I would just think of it as looking different and interesting to the point that the difference in appearance possesses its own entertainment value. I just personally get a kick out of seeing old/familiar things in a new light, but that doesn’t necessarily mean I think it’s better looking. And the original ALTTP is one of the best looking games ever made, so it’s hard for any game to compete with that.
But the key phrase in all that is “professionally made.” Some random individual with a unity license cranking out a couple levels in his free time is never going to produce the graphical quality an actual studio working full time on a game for multiple years can. Not that I think this looks bad, I just wasn’t expecting it to be earth-shattering in the ol’ graphical fidelity department.
This is gorgeous and something Nintendo should pursue in an effort bring all its Zelda oldies into the modern age
Well, I can’t see this not being taken down...
There really are a lot of talented people around the globe 😊
@SpicyBurrito16
It is illegal 🙄
God, I real non-isometric remake of A Link to the past on Switch. Just like Ocarina of time 3D, but in HD and with some modern lightning/shadows and weather effects...!
Someone after a job I guess.
Obviously be taken away soon, but that looks great so far.
How many times does something like this have to happen before people realise Nintendo are gonna come and stomp on it?
Thanks to media, this project will be shutted down too.
@Dezzy,
These guys do not want to make a full game,if they did they would not post any info on it until the project was completed,they simply want to get publicity,as completed or not it will get taken down by Nintendo either way,so why waste more time and effort getting noticed.
Most of these projects aren't meant to reach completion. They are mostly personal learning experiences in the hopes of getting hired in the future.
@Ventilator
I don't think that's "media's" fault. They chose to publicize it.
Sonic has peach-colored arms and LttP Link has pink hair.
I'mma 'boutta cut up some store clerk over this, I swear!
Big N will get their jack boots on and stomp this into the ground.
Interesting but I think this guy is wasting his time!! 😎
@Dezzy It's a fact, and quite obvious. Media is the reason why Nintendo can take action fast.
If it weren't in media, it would be very hard for Nintendo to get knowledge about these projects anytime soon.
So far so good. . . .
I think the only art style that can fit in ALTTP Remake is HD sprites ala Octopath Travelers! 😍
@Heavyarms55
Why does always someone come up with bull like "Oh, Nintendo should hire this guy! 🤪🤪"?
Every freaking time, someone is copying a game from Nintendo (instead of making something own), Nintendo should hire the guy.
Here we go again....
A LTTP 3D remake would be cool...they could retool it as more of a sequel and call it A Link Between Worlds...
...oh wait... B)
I'd absolutely love to get hold of the Unity project files for this.
looks like a cheap mobile game.
It's a neat novelty and all, but surely is yet another instance of someone looking for fame by doing something they know will get Nintendo's and media attention. Also, making a 1:1 recreation is not creatively impressive, and is by no means reason alone Nintendo should hire this person or any other who is just copying an existing game wholesale. Sonic Mania by comparison is a game made by people who have a deep understanding of what made the old games great with the creativity to bring it into a new title.
Why take the time to make something like this knowing it will be shut down
This game looks horrible and soulless. Just further proof that putting a shiny coat of Unity paint on something will always be enough to fool most of the idiots on here.
@Darkyoshi98 free publicity
@MrBlacky Maybe because Sega did it and it actually resulted in a good Sonic game for once? Also it's not like he's making a bootleg and selling it. He's just showing off a recreation of a classic game for clout that he will probably never finish let alone profit from.
"He's just copying it, that's not creative"
"I can't wait to buy REmake and FF8"
I think it looks pretty neat.
Unlike that Mario 64 Unreal Engine fan-made demo, this actually looks really good and probably isn't be too far off from what an official Link to the Past Remake (in the vein of the Link's Awakening Remake) would look like.
Well, by tonight it will be done because Nintendo is on it by now.
Either this game or the original Legend of Zelda were the games that Nintendo should have remade instead of that gameboy game.
This is just one guy's labour of love. No need to worry about it being terrible to play or receiving a takedown, it will probably never be a real distributed thing, just an aspiring dev enjoying every minute of the making.
T Pose. Looks great.
C-C-C-Cease and desist!
"It'sa me, a Nintendo lawyer, and your ass is grass!"
Cya
Raziel-chan
Better include a randomizer xD
Either way I'm gunna get all over this when it's out
Looks good but it doesn't look like a game yet. Just Link walking around some areas.
Step 1 get famous. Step 2 get CnD. Step 3 hope to get a job from that game because that game quickly fades without looking like a franchise.
whats with all these people using unity? the fact that they charge to put the editor in dark mode, the harsh lighting unity is known for, plus that c# crap. why no unreal engine? especially since you’re never going to charge for this. if the purpose is to get a job then unreal engine is more in use in the pro world, unity is a joke
I see Link is asserting his dominance
@tekknik Unity is still a very capable engine. Just look at Yooka Laylee and Cuphead for example. People are drawn to Unity mainly for its beginner friendliness and frankly from my experience C# is a relatively good place to start learning programming being nowhere near as complex as C++
I feel like A Link Between Worlds already scratched this itch for me (Different game, but the world is basically the same as it's a direct sequel). That said, those assets look amazing. Clearly a lot of work is being put into this project.
The C&D is unfortunately inevitable and is Nintendo's right, but I really wish they would compromise in some cases like this by hiring the developer and helping them bring this project to completion. I'd sure as heck play it.
@Coalescence that does very much sound like the view of someone who has never attempted to create anything.
I like the Gnome with the shield. Cute!
Welp The holy tpose is alive again..
@Coalescence All creation involves copying. If you want to make something truly from scratch, you have to invent the universe. The layout and dialogue are not original, but everything you see is brand new. I appreciate this for what it is: really good practice, and a love letter to one of the greatest games of all time. Even if this was a 1:1 duplicate of the original, remaking it would be an amazing feat. All artforms require copying the masters.
Nintendo legal sense tingling!
C&D in 5, 4, 3...
Nintendo I found Your Next Target!!
@Trikeboy This.
This looks really good even in the early stages. Too bad about that impending cease and desist 🙁
Too bad this article brought it to light and now they're gonna get hit with a cease and desist.
Needs to show it to Nintendo so their next handheld can play it! Clearly Switch Lite isn't the 3DS's successor, because Wikipedia says Switch Lite is a home console that doesn't output to a television- weird, but if they say it, then it must be true, Switch Lite is a home console without the ability to play on a television...
Sooo.. to be clear he is NOT remaking the game, he is literally only coding it to make a "proof of concept" to film. cease and desist would likely only come from distribution of the game itself but since he is only doing it in order to make videos I don't really see the logic in that happening. 🤔
Dont get the negative comments about this guy doing it for publicity. Reeks of jealousy. Talented chap showing of his wares.
And as far as Nintendo taking it down, it's really no more harmful to their IP than fanart.
@Heavyarms55 that'd be cool, but wouldn't be kinda awkward if the creators of the fan game deny the job offer? Or what they could have is like an official game jam where they create a fan game for gamescom or e3 and they can't share it online.
@Heavyarms55 Nintendo has their own development team if they really wanted to do a remake. They have plenty of talent in-house. It's a good resume item if these fan project devs apply elsewhere, but without sounding mean because these devs seem to be good at what they do, Nintendo doesn't need them.
Let's not forget that Nintendo almost always don't look at projects in progress and then offer to fund development midway. That's more of an Epic Games Store sort of deal.
@Wolfgabe sure, unity is a capable engine but you don’t need to know c++ to write unreal games, their visual programming (which is a joy to use even knowing c++) is full featured and translates to c++. so while c# is easier than c++, visual programming is even easier and suffers no real performance loss over c++
Knowing how Nintendo is towards projects like this, why even bother? A complete waste of time.It will get shut down. Use this talent to create your own original game..
I hope more people continue to have the balls to show their fan creations like this. I find it pretty unfair that every other media has the ability to share their work in a friendly natural manner (fanart, or musical covers) but fan games are out of the question.
@SpicyBurrito16 yes, me and the lab boys can also see that he is t posing to.
Very impressive!
As for the Link's awakening remake: Unreal again?! Doesn't Nintendo use their own engines anymore?
Nice practice work for game making. I doubt he ever completes it.
