Ah, GoldenEye 007. If you owned a copy of this N64 classic during your youth, you probably also have an ample supply of nostalgic memories to go alongside it, as well as a few angry ones aimed at your friends who chose to play as Oddjob.
What you probably don't have, though, is the ability to say that you've completed the game firing just one bullet. We wouldn't have thought the feat possible in all honesty, but Ryan White, better known in the speedrunning community as 'Goose', has done exactly that.
Ryan's detailed how it all comes together in this video below. For the most part, it turns out you're able to use speedrunning techniques to simply charge your way through each level and bypass the guards in your way, or at the very least lure them into dropping mines. Certain levels are much more tricky than others - especially when extra goals such as collecting key cards are involved - but using the trusty 'Slappers Only' playstyle of whacking everything that moves with a quick hand chop is usually super effective.
So what about that one bullet? Well, as you can see above, the one essential shot in the game's campaign actually comes in the very first level. In the Dam level, you'll come up against a padlock on a gate towards the very end; Ryan says that there's simply no other way of breaking that lock, even if you make the guards shoot at it.
If you're up for something a little different, why not fire up your copy and see if you can pull this off? Or maybe you could try beating the game's first level using just a piano?

"Slappers only!"
I had the same rule for my 30th birthday party.
I'm the man who killed them there Jinkens Brothers with 1 bullet.....all 9 of em
I didn't know you could push Travelyan with a slap. Maybe Bond does push him in the end. Anticlimatic
Oddjob was banned from being used between me and my friends. But we did used to play, one shot kills, pistols only
Geez, first thought is that the Protect Natalya missions would be ridiculous, though the battles with Xenia and Alec would also be pretty tough.
Still, I wanna try this now...
He is known as RWGoose. Get it right. Secondly it was as slappers only challenge which failed on the Dam due to the gate lock. Every other stage is possible based on the shots fired stat. Because the watch laser and grenades are technically not shots fired.
Sure a slapper only run is impossible so it was challenge failed. He got close though with the above grenade and watch laser technicality.
Watching this video reminds me of how good this game still is. I can't tell you how many times I played through each of these levels trying to find every secret.
@gaga64
If you know the WR agent strats which RWGoose knows being a Goldeneye speedrunner himself the this is not a hard challenge.
The only tough part is getting grenades when you need them.
I must be old as i've never heard the term slappers before.
@BacklogBlues too young, perhaps.
Such a great game back in the day, but it definitely has not aged well if you go back and try to play nowadays lol.
I assumed the bullet was needed for the train level to injure Xenia to delay Trevalyan's escape, I think this guy using the laser watch is a bit of a cheat even though it's not technically a bullet!
That said I have occasionally managed to beat that level without injuring Xenia, sometimes Natalia is quick enough on the computer and sometimes she's not.
As someone born in the 70's @lyle_catcliffe you're to kind.
This is the future of FPS once guns become illegal 😜
Not watched the video yet (I will do later) but there are a few bits of the game that are surely significantly difficult with these rules?!
Clearly I need to watch the video - but yea, this is interesting to think about for a big Goldeneye fan!
just like Pirates of the Caribbean
That's so funny that the one bullet isn't even used on an enemy haha.
We've been slapping skins for some time now.
Oh, wow! I was sitting here while reading the article thinking "I bet that 'one' bullet was for the padlock in the first level" I never imagined I'd be right on the money. I am enjoying this interest in handicapped speed runs like SM64 without any coins for example. Much more fun for me to watch than a straight serious speedrun, especially when amateurs try stuff like the 'green devil' challenge in SM64.
“Hasn’t aged well”
Translated...
“Still plays better than any FPS today”
Back in the day, a few of us from here used to play Golden Eye Wii online with slaps only rules. It was great fun, we even managed to get a few randoms join in when they figure out what we were doing.
