Cuphead may well be one of the most well-received 2D run 'n gun platformers of recent times, but how would its standout aesthetic have looked if everything was in 3D instead? If you've been hoping to find the answer to that very specific question, you're in luck.
Raf Grassetti, art director on God of War, has recreated the game's heroes Cuphead and Mugman. We've actually featured his work on the site several times over the past few months; he's been sharing different takes on beloved gaming characters, including a large portion of the Super Smash Bros. roster.
That's not all for Cuphead and co., though, as Grassetti has also recently posted these designs for King Dice and the Devil. We think they look great, even with Cuphead's original art style being so important to the game's overall feel.
What do you think? Are you a fan of these designs? Remember, Cuphead is soon getting its very own Netflix show.

Those are insanely cool. Love his work.
Pretty excellent stuff, but pay attention to Mugman's right arm.
It does that common exaggeration of the arm coming out of the character's head instead of their torso. It's something the Powerpuff Girls did a lot.
It creates a visual that only works from a forced viewpoint, if you did a turntable of Mugman his arm would probably look pretty strange.
Although Mugman is leaning pretty far forward, so it's not a stretch that his shoulders might be behind his head.
Sometimes when I look at Cuphead, I want to go to a milk bar and get a milkshake. These pictures even more so. 😋😄
These look brilliant
Still patiently waiting for the DLC
Just so amazing. Wow
These are still digital paintings, not actually 3D, but the skill on display makes such a distinction almost irrelevant, I suppose.
King Dice is my favorite I do love his sinister grin.
I like these a lot better than his disturbing Pokemon re-imaginings! This look great!
Though I wonder....why does he have all this free time to be doing all these? He's talented...he has credentials on very top games....shouldn't he have a bunch of gigs on other games keeping him busy?
This guy is a talented artist, but not Earthshatteringly so. His name is attached to God of War, and that makes clicks. This article is pure clickbait.
What he is doing here is nice, but I've seen fan art from people all over the internet that is as nice or better. But they are just random Joe-shmo nobodies, so they don't get clicks like tacking "God of War" and "Cuphead" onto the same article does.
Wow these are nice. This guy has talent.
Ok, these I like. Not much of a fan of his Smash work.
These are definitely a lot better than his hit-or-miss Smash designs. Those were more reimaginings, but these here are more faithful to the originals.
@Heavyarms55 Piss off. That's not what clickbait is and you know it. Also, this artist has had a history of recreating Smash Bros characters and as, you mentioned, worked with the freaking God of War series so he's well deserving of an article (which he's already gotten numerous times). Take your negativity else where and go away.
Oh. They look like little figurines.
@RupeeClock If an arm is coming out of your head. Please see your doctor immediately.
@Mycroft You can put other IP's on your art portfolio?
@RupeeClock. Also, the red straw is a fair bit taller than the original, which although minor, does give a different look. Possibly longer legs on Mugman too... They’re great renders however.
@FTL
Oh it's certainly no complaint, it comes with adaptation.
@Gluffofficial Why don't you follow your own advice? He get's special treatment because he worked on God of War, but there are plenty of people who are just as talented or very close to it and don't get featured because their names aren't attached to anything famous yet. NintendoLife can tag this article with both Cuphead and God of War and that will get clicks out the door. That's exactly what clickbait is.
I am not denying his talent in anyway, but I am accurately pointing out that there are plenty of other people with comparable skills around who never get featured. Why? Because their names are unknown or little known and wont generate many clicks. If you can't handle that factual statement, that's just too bad.
Looks like those Unreal 4 renditions people love to show except with Cuphead instead of Nintendo characters.
Those look amazing! This also reminds me how much I want to play the next God of War!
@Heavyarms55 But art is subjective so that of course would b "your opinion" on the talent of those other artists...In this article people r giving their opinion on this artist....
@Sim1 It is my opinion on his and other's skill levels. But not the rest of my points. The only reason his fan art is being featured over other fan art is because they can attach both "God of War" and "Cuphead" to the same article. If these exact same images were done by Johnny McRandom on Tumblr or Deviantart, and let me stress exact same quality just done by someone else, that person would not get featured. I often peruse fan art on various websites and blogs. There are countless extremely talented artists out there who do work that no one would deny is utterly amazing. But their names aren't attached to anything special, so they don't generate clicks and don't get featured. Not unless they go viral on Twitter or something and again - only because that would cash in.
I love this site. I happily visit it every day. But things like this annoy me.
Mmm ok but u need 2 stop "micro managing" your comments because 3 people (just here) disagree with u...The reason 4 that is the use of words like "clickbait" and "earth shattering"...there's zero factual statements in your original comment, just accept it and move on 2 another article...
They are very cool.
