Cadence of Hyrule: Crypt of the NecroDancer Featuring The Legend of Zelda (seriously, what is with the length of that title) has now been available for a good few days. If you've already tried it out for yourself, you'll know that it hits all the high notes and provides a stonking good time.
If you have checked it out, we imagine you've probably been playing it using either your Joy-Con or a Pro Controller. Fine choices, sure, but we've now stumbled across the ultimate way to play: a dance mat.
Shared on Twitter by Gamespot video producer @JeanLucSeipke, the video below shows this modern wonder of gaming in motion. The inputs on the mat allow the player to move around and defeat enemies just like you would a with a normal controller, except this time you can truly dance and stomp to the beat of all your favourite Zelda tracks.
Considering we've seen people playing Super Smash Bros. Ultimate with a bunch of bananas in the past, this is actually a relatively 'normal' setup. Should we start a Cadence of Hyrule dance mat speedrunning category? We'd love to see that.

I'm interested in Cadence of Hyrule but I think I'll wait for the inevitable eShop sale before I pick this up.
I've already played it once.
I now have a reason to play it in a true "hard mode"
Bought Necrodancer as it was on sale, not my type of game.
Fair play to this guy though
DDR Cadence of Hyrule Mix ! 🤣🤣🤣
Btw, the way he stepped on dance mat was soo.... Amateur. 😜
Bought necrodancer in the sale and not for me, but that's down to not having any rhythm . So will give this a miss.
@suikoden Not trying to convince you into buying the game but there is a "fixed beats" mode that allows you to play without the rythm aspect. It then plays a lot like a traditional 2D Zelda game. Since you own CotN, you could play with a character called "Bard" to see wether you like the "fixed beats" mode or not
This isn't REALLY random considering Crypt of the NecroDancer was highly marketed as being playable with a DDR pad.
@suikoden That's too bad, considering it doesn't require any more advanced rhythm than, say, walking down the street xD What makes these games difficult is the split-second puzzle solving rather than any actually complicated rhythm
What a legand🙋
Woah, they still make dance pads??? I haven't seen one of these since the Dreamcast days, when I discovered that any game that you can control with analog controls is a billion times better with a dance pad. Or at least... several times more... interesting?
Just beat it, and it’s amazing but not for everyone. Let my friend whose a huge Zelda fan try it, and it’s was just sad seeing him fumble the beats. You need a good sense of rhythm to properly enjoy this game
@Anti-Matter I honestly hope that you'll consider playing the game this way. It seems right up your alley! 😁
@suikoden as stated, you can essentially turn off the rhythm game and play it more like it Zelda was a mystery dungeon game. Enemies only move/act when you do, randomized dungeon... great for people who lack rhythm.
@kurtasbestos oh yeah they definitely still make dance pads, I got two a year ago so I could okay Stepmania again, which continues to get new music. Great cardio!
@skyward_nicky have you tried switching to fixed beats? You don’t need rhythm then, it essentially becomes a mystery dungeon game.
Dang, if I had a GameCube dance pad I’d definitely do this. really wish I could!
@ShadJV If I had a GC adapter, I’d try it with CotN. I think we’re in opposite boats. Lol
As others reiterate, PEOPLE, both Cadence of Hyrule and CotN have “tone deaf” mode for those bad at the rhythm aspect of the game. Play as the Bard If you have the original game and try it that way!
You know, with a little bit of thought I think they could actually make a rather cool arcade out of this game. Don't know if it necessarily needs to be a game where you step around on a mat or whatever, but something is just waiting to happen in that area for this game imo.
Actually brilliant. Software update when?
I am absolutely terrible at this game
So many tools and items in this game, but yeah 99% of it is just moving. This would actually work pretty darn well.
Edit: aside from confirming the dialog boxes of course! Otherwise it might have been possible to complete the whole game with just a D Pad!
The real challenge is getting the NES mat I used to use for California games back in the day. Sure it's still in my folks attic.
@Not-Geno I disagree completely. It just needs to click. I was struggling up until this morning until I woke up a 4am and I'm still on it now. I've even turned the beat bar off at the bottom. The chequered pattern around you character even tells you when to move and that's far easier than following the bar. I'm making huge progress on it now. Flippin amazing game!
@Kai_ persevere buddy. I was in the same boat as you. Get a couple more hearts and the broad sword from the vendor and you will be fine. Turn off the beat bar at the bottom as it's an annoyance and just go with the flashing chequered pattern around your character. Its clicked with me now and it's so addictive.
