During E3, physical indie publisher Limited Run Games teased what appeared to be a huge Star Wars announcement. The reveal showed that the company would be teaming up with Lucasfilm Games for some physical releases, but it wasn't 100% clear how this would actually work.
Today, Limited Run has shared the news that physical Game Boy and NES cartridges are on the way, acting as the first two products to come from this new relationship. This Friday (28th June) you'll be able to get your order in for Star Wars on your preferred retro platform. Check out the tweet below.
As you can see, there will be two batches of limited orders going on sale on that day. At the same time, limited quantities of standard and collector's editions for Star Wars: Bounty Hunter on PS4 will also go live.
NES and Game Boy cartridges releasing in 2019? In packaging as cool as that? Go on, then.

This seems... incredibly pointless lol. Neither game is rare or expensive to pick up still, so this is only really going to appeal to hardcore collectors who will want to keep them sealed up and sat on a shelf to look pretty. Why couldn't they just give us a damn bundle of games for modern systems?
It looks like Nintendo hasn't approved these. I'm definitely not putting them in my classic game systems
@bigcalsworld I agree. It's a cool thing that they're doing, sort of, but I really think it's silly/pointless/dumb if they're putting all this effort into messing around with these old Star Wars games and not bringing them to modern consoles (Switch specifically). I'm remaining hopeful that they'll bring them over eventually until they confirm that they aren't.
Oh. Well.... so much for having a retro collection of Star Wars games on my Switch...
The packaging is amazing! But gah, I'm heart broken these games aren't coming to Switch
Oh boy, can't wait to spend what I'm assuming will be $30 on an NES game that will melt my console!
@Krambo42 this is for collectors.
@ALinkttPresent They probably wouldn't approve of anything for an old system.
@Trajan I know it's for collectors. I don't see why both can't exist.
@Trajan And by the way:

Wouldn’t it be better if they were packaged in original design GB/NES boxes? Personally think so...
@ALinkttPresent i imagine more people own retrons and similar consoles than working NES systems.
@Krambo42 typical scum bag response from LRG... buy this over priced tat and we might sell you other over priced tat. I have every switch release for LRG and wish I hadn’t started they are one of the worst companies to deal with. Over hype their stuff and sell cheap rubbish collectors editions.... I can only imagine the cheap quality of these carts.
Why would interest in a cheap knock off gameboy cart signal any interest in switch versions??? Illogical nonsense
@Stocksy Pretty sure that's just his way of saying they're coming. Maybe I'm being overly optimistic or giving him too much credit, but we all know they're gonna sell out. And that it makes no sense to only release them on old hardware. I mean, who knows, we'll have to see what happens. The point is, yeah, obviously these are for collectors, you can easily get the games on ebay or in used game stores...but collectors editions to go along with re-releases on modern hardware makes the most sense.
If anything, they should give us an official localization of Namco Star Wars.
I like the idea in theory, but these are totally useless. These games still exist in physical form at just about every used game store. These should be collections for the Switch or PS4 or another current console.
I have it still from my childhood gameboy days. Its not good i always thought it wasnt.
Man, those late 70s/early 80s packages make the little boy in me happy, that lived to collect the old Kenner-made Original Trilogy action figures! Did anyone else here collect those? The nostalgia nerd in me needs these only for the packaging. Plus, I’ve never played these versions! I do wish this had been the SNES series, however. Maybe next time.
On a side note, damn the Prequel and Sequel Trilogies need to be made Super Star Wars-style!!! Fan creations on YouTube just aren’t enough.
This sounds like your typical situation where they are re-releasing old cartridges at a price that far exceeds what you can easily buy them for used. It's definitely for the kind of collectors who don't even open them.
@JayJ I don't think anybody is denying that. People (myself included), though, believe that it's kinda silly to release these without also porting the games to modern consoles along the way.
Still have the original NES cartridge on my shelves
I thought they meant they were bringing the games to the new consoles, not re-release physical carts. They would never go near my consoles
It would have made more sense to just port both ROMs to Switch and sell those on a single physical cartridge for collectors.
But that's just crazy talk, right?
I'm not even a Star Wars fan (never watched any of them), but the idea of GB games on Switch is so tantalising that I would buy an overpriced ROM dump pertaining to a franchise that I have no interest in. I freakin' love/miss Game Boy games. Nintendo is squandering a gold mine by not profiteering from their rich and varied catalogue of gems, even the monochromatic ones.
Wow, limited games and starwars. These will go fast
The NES Star Wars is a pretty great (and really difficult!) game. Love flying through the asteroid field and watching Obi Wan raise characters from the dead!
If only they made a trilogy cartridge for the Super Star Wars games for Super NES, that would be way more awesome.
Would have preferred if they had released a collectible game card featuring all three of the Super Star Wars games that would have worked on Nintendo Switch. That would have been a fun collection to have. Regardless I have a modded SNES Classic with these games on that already and they play incredible, including taking advantage of that system's Save option. So I'll probably just stick with that.
What's Star Wars? Seriously I could care less but I can see how fans would get excited over this. If they rereleased good Star Wars games (for example the ones that were released for the Gamecube) then I would get excited. These games are no bueno. Getting excited over this is the equivalent of getting excited over a rerelease of the poorly made Transformers Famicom game.
This makes me think of the recent announcement of the Monkey Island games being rereleased....ON THEIR ORIGINAL PLATFORMS! Seriously?! If you can obtain the licenses, why not figure out a way to dump these on Switch, or PS4?
Cool, but would've preferred replicas of the original GB box. On the other hand, I can get hold on the original pretty easy.
Nice idea, but as others have said they are not even the best Star Wars games out there. Now bring me a working port of X-Wing and Tie Fighter on Switch and nostalgia just might overcome my common sense, especially if they include the tools to build missions.
@Roam85 my NES Control Deck that I received on Christmas 1988 still works like brand new.
Wait, what? I was more excited when I thought they were re-releasing these classic titles on newer consoles, like Switch...
How about Limited Run re-release the N64 Star Wars games that would be nice.
@LaytonPuzzle27 They are. Shadows of the Empire and Racer, anyway.
@Krambo42 Cool I hope they do more of this.
This will appeal to the most hardcore of Star Wars fans and those who grew up with that iconic toy packaging and the NES/GB games. Everyone else, not so much.
I played the GB game in the early 90s after finding it for £5. Got pretty far but after finding out I needed the lightsaber to kill the garbage monster, I gave up.
Love Star Wars on the NES and the packaging brings back memories of the figurines.
This appeals to me in so many ways, but I'm done with collecting retro collectables, if I can't play them, not interested.
I love Pre-Disney Star Wars but these games don't hold up. I think unless you grew up playing them they don't really have much appeal.
Later SW titles were far far better. I'd suggest KOTOR 1 or 2, Empire at War, Shadows of the Empire, Rogue Squadron 1-3, Jedi Power Battles, the Jedi Academy games, Heck even the Clone Wars game on Gamecube was pretty cool.
I once had Star Wars on the Sega Game Gear, which was essentially a color portable version of the NES game. Remember staying up past bedtime on school nights in the dark trying to make it through the nightmare that was the Death Star stage trying to rescue Leia's ass. Failed miserably. Never got around to finishing it.
Wait, what? This seems uhh crazy.
Kind of odd seeing the game carts on action-figure blister packs. I also had the Game Gear version. The scrolling is a bit odd on that one. In terms of playability, the Master System version is the best of the 8-bit Star Wars games, in my opinion. The NES version is quite a bit harder, and not in a way I like.
I love this but don't understand this, none of these games are especially good or expensive, coupled with a blister pack card design that i will never want to open. looks cool but totally pointless. A dumb release for limited Run in my eyes.
