Meltan is quite a departure for the world of Pokémon, as it made its debut not in a mainline Pokémon game, but in the smartphone spin-off Pokémon GO.
The Pokémon Company has now revealed that Meltan evolves into Melmetal, making it the first Mythical Pokémon to be able to evolve.
Here's the official bio for the 'mon:
Melmetal was worshiped in ancient times as a Pokémon with the power to create metal. Because of its Evolution from Meltan, its body has hardened and is now incredibly sturdy. Melmetal is made of liquid metal, and its flexible arms can be whipped forward to deliver a devastating punch. It can also execute a powerful, unique Steel-type physical move known as Double Iron Bash. By using the hex nut in its chest like an axle to spin its arms around, Melmetal can deal a double strike to its opponent. The weight of the heavy hex nuts on its arms combined with the spinning motion gives the Double Iron Bash move extraordinary power.
To evolve Meltan into Melmetal, you'll need a whopping 400 Meltan Candies. You'll also be able to gain Meltan Candies by sending that Pokémon from Pokémon GO to the upcoming Switch title Pokémon: Let’s Go, Pikachu! or Pokémon: Let’s Go, Eevee!, when it eventually launches.

I'm getting some T-1000 vibes with this one.
LOL, I popped in for the entertainment of reading about this Pokemon. Mission accomplished
That’s legit and I want five of them
I like it. Very mythical looking
That's look like Iron Giant from Final Fantasy.
I don’t know. Am I the only one who feels that the evolution for Meltan was...underwhelming?
Looks like something that'll be redrawn into Jojo fanart soon.
It’s cool that we’re getting this Pokemon and all, but if you’re going to treat players to some awesome rare Pokemon at least base it in something cool from Mythology that hasn’t yet been used as a base design, like a Hippogriff, a Chimera or Cerberus, not something from the fixtures section of B&Q.
@RadioHedgeFund It's based on the ancient belief that metal was a mystical element, as this is worshipped as the creator of metals.
So ya know, alchemy. Plus, they don't always have to be based on mythology. This is also based, in a more modern sense, on the understood properties of mercury to amalgamate.
It’s alright looking. The eye nut thing is probably my least favorite part about it and its prevo. It always just looks like someone smacked it on top of puddy
Buff Silver Ditto.
ITS AN ENEMY STAND!
Deez nuts!
It also has that ugly wire tail. Maybe I’m just being boring and grumpy.
I don’t even know where to begin with this one... (sighs)
Reminds me of Regigigas
I like it. Let's Go has own me over. I'm getting it
I dub thee, buff Meltan.
As if we needed more proof that the Pokémon team is completely off their meds
whoever created this dummmy thing is "NUTS" (Really bad pun very intentional !!!), just his appearance is gut Wrenching, I better Bolt outta here before these puns get any worse !!!
I have seen some cool Pokemon, I have seen some sorry ones, but this is definitely in the top three along side "Chargabug" & "Alola Exeggutor"
Looks like Pokémon is finally off the rails. Whoever designed that thing has more than a few screws loose.
Looks almost like something that should belong in Earthbound, actually.
These two new Pokemon are not pretty at all. Game freak run out of ideas...
That's kinda nutty.
But I guess that's one way of getting afficionados to buy generation one again.
I'm just... why? I am really disapointed with both of these. I am a long time fan of pokemon and I am a person who loves most of the series designs, especialy Gen5, But this is just disapointing. Let's just hope that that gen 8 is better than this...
@0muros Why is it that people always say that? Also appearance alone can't be the only reason you think that.
I kept expecting Meltan or Melmetal to suddenly kill the professors in that video. I may have been watching too much Doctor Who...
Hello Mel, How was your day?
Who they have it up to a new level of ugly.
i have seen better fakemon than this thing
Reminds me of the London 2012 Olympic mascots.
BuffNut looks just find. People need to stop hating on the designs so much. Sure, fans have made really good stuff but there's more to Pokémon than just cute junk.
TBH, Meltan was one thing - but Melmetal is another. Imma stick to loving Marshadow, thanks.
@frogopus Its all subjective. I've seen some good fan art. But then a good lot of it is just as loud and busy as some accuse recent official designs of being
Meltan's evo looks good enough. But those two professors... just don't belong in the same world. Talk about clashing aesthetics!
So, is this thing currently found in game? All the ones I caught were Dittos. :/
Horrible name and design...
The could at least call it Reggitang or something since its similar to them.
Aaand... Ah. The satisfaction of being right all along. I was right! It IS an uninspired garbage pokémon. Zero creativity. Little Ditto with a bolt turning into an abominable fusion of Regigigas and Golurk.
Personally I was hoping for a cute evolution but they always have to go overboard with these evolutions 😔
I just can't get over the fact that Meltan looks like ditto made out of mercury with a nut on its head...
@Setery People maybe but not me. Check my other posts, I'm not a negative useless troll user on this website. I'm playing Pokemon green since 1997. I owe all games from the serie. I gave up on Ultrasun and Ultramoon and I'm waiting for a good reason to jump in again and this Metal one weird eye looking Pokemon don't look good at all. A fourth and a fifth evolution of Magnemite/ Magneton.
@Katelyn1223 He's horrible looking I know. We're in 2018 my godness. There's thousand of excellent artists everywhere to draw good looking Pokemon.
@Finlderp Same exact thought here. Beldum, Metang and Metagross was so nice not like this one.
@0muros Don't get me wrong but it's no way a good artist who draw this one. It's not a subjective opinion at all.
That's.........better? I guess?
Anyone get the feeling it can turn into a car with those block wheels?
Reminds me of a Kirby enemy for some reason, which is better, I guess??
sorry if it evolves, it isn't a mythical. I don't care what anyone says.
400? Screw this noise.
I honestly like this new Pokemon and its evolution. Wish I can get him though since I can't play Pokemon Go. Sad sigh
@RadioHedgeFund : The legendary Type: Null and its evolution Silvally were based on chimera.
I like it. The idea of a living metal Pokemon is pretty cool. I wonder what his stats will be like in the real game? I hope they make him viable without making him broken.
@MisterKorman manaphy doesn't evolve....
@MisterKorman Manaphy can breed, but Phione can't evolve into it, so the statement is accurate.
Also, before anyone comments on them, Cosmog, Cosmoem, and Poipole are Legendary but not Mythical. Mythical Pokémon are the ones that are not normally available in the games and require some kind of special event or other special process to obtain, and Meltan and Melmetal are officially comfirmed to be Mythical.
It looks cool, but I wish Melmetal wasn't exclusive to "Pokémon Go."
I thought it would have a form change version like several other mystics, but this is just as good. Change up the norm like Manaphy being the first to have its own egg and breed.
The part that left the biggest impression on me is that this is the first Pokémon that is made up of two or more Pokémon that needs them gathered together (kind of) to evolve, if the candy part is the only way. Diglett, Magnemite, Beldum, and Slowpoke come to mind with the pseudo-ish evolving.
@goggles789
Oh it does
