When Fortnite on PlayStation 4 was recently made compatible with certain other versions of the game, Psyonix's Vice President of Publishing said there were no immediate announcements regarding Rocket League and recommended contacting Sony to find out more.
Now, the CEO of Psyonix has released a statement via Reddit about cross-platform play, assuring fans it is still a huge priority for the development team, but it just might take some time for the vision of a unified community to be truly realised.
Cross play across all consoles is a subject that is near and dear to my heart. It has been my passion since the inception of Rocket League and I have constantly encouraged my team that we not only have the opportunity but the obligation to be pioneers in bringing gamers together regardless of platform. Games may come and go but it is not often that you have the ability to be part of a real step forward in online gaming.
We built Rocket League to be a cross-platform game from the very beginning. It has been a Psyonix mandate that our technology, processes, and policies must always comply with this effort and we have worked tirelessly to ensure it. We hoped that other developers would join us in this effort and they did. We hoped that gamers would cry out for more and they did.
Of course, cross-platform play is not something Psyonix and Rocket League can do on it’s own. It takes the substantial cooperation and coordination of many partners, most notably the platform holders themselves. It is with the greatest joy that I can now acknowledge that all the major consoles are making progress towards a truly all-platform cross-platform play experience!
I want everyone to understand just how much of a priority this is for us and always has been for our team. There are still many factors, some of which take time, that means we have to have some patience. I am excited beyond words and I wanted to make sure that our players know where we stand. I can't wait to see our vision for a truly unified Rocket League community finally realized.
Do you want to see more cross-platform play added to games in the future? Have you also been hoping to see a unified Rocket League community for a long time now? Tell us below.

Games like these live and die depending on a healthy community, so it isn't surprising.
This is also why subbing for online isn't healthy. It shrinks communities and it will undoubtedly make smaller titles having a harder time to survive.
C'mon Sony, you did it for Fortnite so you might as well. I personally think Rocket League is a much better, more competitive game anyway.
Sony: Oh my God, I already did crossplay with you guys. Leave me alone.
Your move, Sony.
Not a good idea... Switch users are at a disadvantage. Games like Fornite is running 30fps on Switch, latency will get you killed.
@NINC0MPUTER A Nincompoop clone? Why, how fascinating.
And eh, just means Switch users need to be better
@NINC0MPUTER
Rocket League runs at 60 FPS on the Switch.
...not to mention theres millions of people on wireless across every single platform in existence.
Its not the best idea point a finger at one platform that every single platform does.
i think rocket league is here to stay. it might not be as big as starcraft or counter strike, but it is a unique multiplayer game and will be part of popular esports for years to come.
i bought the game just a few weeks ago and already have like 230 clocked in. not much longer and it will surpass skyrim in terms of time played.
I'll believe it when I see it. They said cross-platform parties would be here almost 2 years ago. Then they say it would be out in the September update in a blog post yet here we are, yet again, without the update.
@NINC0MPUTER If they can sort out the framepacing issues and get a locked 60 then Fortnite at 30 on the Switch will be fine. 60 would be idea but lets take it one step at a time.
Framepacing and the FPS dips are far more of an issue as this creates input latency spikes and stutter, which will have more of an impact than just the 33.3ms frametime target.
So, it looks like they're finally admitting that they have actual work to do. And of course, still finding time to shift their responsibilities onto us and everyone else.
I really like Rocket League and have been playing for quite a while. It runs at 60fps so no issues there. Something that's a bit surprising to me is that, at least in my region, I haven't noticed any dips in terms of Nintendo players now that online is payed like everyone else.
In this article from Polygon in 2017, Psyonix said it was ready to go and it only needed Sony's ok. https://www.google.com.au/amp/s/www.polygon.com/platform/amp/e3/2017/6/13/15795376/rocket-league-cross-platform-playstation-4
