JMJ Interactive has announced that upcoming retro platformer Robbotto will be available on the Nintendo Switch eShop next week.
Inspired by Bubble Bobble, the arcade and NES classic that actually made its way to the NES Mini, Robbotto is a retro-based, co-op arcade platformer in which you must travel through a malfunctioning star cruiser. You'll be doing this as Robb and Otto, two intrepid maintenance robots, in an attempt to shut down all of the robots and machines rampaging through the ship.
The game aims to provide players with a simplistic, retro feel that takes away the complexities of recent gaming trends. “I feel that many games these days focus heavily on online gaming, and focus too much on complex mechanics,” explains Robbotto developer, Mårten Jonsson. “That’s fun and all, but there is always going to be a need for classic gaming with fun, straightforward gameplay. I’ve put a lot of effort into this game in order to provide the kind of gaming experience I enjoyed when I was a kid, and I hope people will have as much fun playing it as I had making it.”
Here's what you can expect to find in the game:
FEATURES:
- Classic Arcade Action
-100 Levels
- 20 Different Enemies
- 10 Huge Bosses
- Single Player or Local Co-op
Robbotto arrives on the Nintendo eShop on 16th August, priced at £8.99 / $9.99. Do you like what you see? Let us know if you'll be picking this one up with a comment.

Sorry, but can't see the Bubble Bobble inspiration, might give it a go though.
@Bunkerneath Really? You can't see it? Bub 'n' Bob could only shoot left and right. The bubble didn't kill em you had to pop it. The robots only shoot left and right. The shock doesn't kill them, you have to attack them again. As for the levels. 0:19 is pretty much lifted! (and the one before that too.)
Bubble Bobble and its sequels are probably my all time favorite games.
I can say instantly that this game is FAAARRRRRRR from the Bubble Bobble serie.
It's generic as hell, it moves poorly, the atmophere is not there etc...etc...
No way I'm gonna play this game.
Talk about Pr@&# Tease Headline (at a quick glance)
Am hoping Bubble Bobble, Rainbow Islands, New Zealand Story get the Arcade Archives treatment
@Gerald
Parasol Stars, Bubble Symphony, Bubble memories too !
Snow Bros and nightmare in the dark deserve it too.
Looks okay. The match bubbles is the only good bubble bobble game though
Would make for a good phone game. To bad there are a bunch of fakes. Just checked
@Gerald @Cobalt All of the above, and don't forget Rod Land, also in the same vein as Bubble Bobble.
@GrailUK The only relationship to bubble bobble (Which I still have on a tape for the C64) I can see is it's pixelated and has 100 levels. You don't use bubbles and you aren't dragons.
@OfNullAndVoid
They made a game on the Switch, Soldam which use the univers of Rod Land. I was digusted when I saw that. I thought they will bring a sequel to Rod Land rather than a "puyo puyo style game".
PS : and don't forget Don Doko Don too !
@Bunkerneath Haha, I have it on C64 too Firebird knocked it outta the park with Bubble Bobble and Flying Shark! Anyhoo...ye, if you are just going to make a game comparison on visuals...then of course they look different.
If you're going to bother to make a game, any game at least try and offer soemthing even slifghtly original and if you're going to use pixel aesthetic make sure it's good, not this garbage. I love indie games and am a huge supporter but this is a weak cash grab attempt.
@Cobalt Soldam drop has nothign to do with Rodland universe.
I'll be the bad guy.
This looks like something that should have been released for free 15 years ago, not sold on Switch for $10.
Games like these should be on the dev's website as "look what we made on the road to our [first game actually worth paying for]"! Or something to add to CV. Not something that will make any return on investment.
@YANDMAN Actually, Soldam is to Rod Land what Puzzle Bobble is to Bubble Bobble. If you look up Soldam Arcade, you'll find promotional material which features the fairies from Rod Land. In addition to this, look at gameplay (vs mode) and you'll see how it uses assets from Rod Land.
@YANDMAN
O RLY ? o_O
Explain me how come TAM and RIT are the principal characters in Soldam ?
@SmaggTheSmug Well, then I'll be the bad guy right along with you, because I totally agree with you.
Domo arigato, let’s play Robbotto.
Honestly can’t see how people are saying this isn’t a bubble bobble clone...
It’s pretty much identical.
Hilarious.
Heres hoping stage 57 doesn't suck.
(In case anyone is wondering) I think the game looks awful. Just because I can see the resemblance to Bubble Bobble doesn't mean I think it looks as good as it lol.
It’s like they took Bubble Bobble and decided to remove the cutesy visuals, the cool bubble mechanic, and the overall charm of the original. And so we’re left with a shell of a game...
I might consider this one to play with the kids, looks simple and cute.
