Nintendo has revealed a brand new addition to the New Nintendo 2DS XL line up. Featuring a purple and silver design, this system will be released in North America next month (no news for European players just yet).
Yes, on 28th September, this shiny new 2DS model will become available with the mighty evergreen seller Mario Kart 7 pre-installed. It will be available at a suggested retail price of $149.99, and both of the already available New Nintendo 2DS XL colour schemes (black/turquoise and white/orange) will also be changed to feature Mario's racing endeavours as an included title.
The new system comes as part of an early holiday push for Nintendo, with a super-snazzy Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Pro Controller that has already been announced, a Smash limited edition bundle, and new starter packs for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 2 and Super Mario Odyssey all being made available over the coming months.
Nintendo of America President and COO Reggie Fils-Aime has said the following:
“We want to give people a variety of options and price points when shopping for themselves or the Nintendo fans in their lives. Whether looking for a portable system for a first-time gamer or a cool controller to play Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, Nintendo has great gifts for all ages this holiday season.”

You can't stop the 2DS XL!
Ooooh.... !!!
Purple 2DS XL !
Long live 3/2DS!
This is great for the people who need to pick up a 7th 3ds/2ds
Very nice colour.
I really like the orange and white one but have no need. I’d love some orange joy cons though. Better yet - transparent colors like the Gameboy Color and N64.
Wish we got the Animal Crossing edition in NA, i would pick it to keep as a spare unit.
Pretty!!!!
Can't ignore it when it keeps selling, I suppose. Though, you have to wonder how many of these sales are from collectors at this point.
Regardless, I just hope that, for the Switch, they use a better naming convention for future revisions. "New" makes sense in Japan, where English is mostly used for flavor text, but its frustrating everywhere else. Lol
@Regpuppy
Use "NEO" instead New.
Wait. The 3DS will be compatible as a controller for Smash Ultimate?
@Anti-Matter Anything but the word New is fine. Doesn't matter if it's Neo-, -Plus, or some other word.
Had to have someone pick up a New 3DS for me at one point, and they weren't gaming literate, so when I said "New" 3DS it took me describing the whole situation in detail to clarify. They just thought I meant "not used/unopened" like normal people use the word... Infuriating. Lol
150! No thanks.
@thesilverbrick : I'm surprised that there has yet to be any instances of direct 3DS to Switch connectivity (that I am aware of) as of yet.
I strongly doubt that Smash 3DS will be updated to accommodate the Switch version, but it would be nice if the Controller App was updated to support the Switch (or they could release a new piece of software altogether specifically for the Switch edition).
Orange spice joycons when Nintendo?
already have a 2DS that preinstall MK7. so im good.
Looks nice! I still prefer the turquoise/black design, but this one isn't bad either.
@Tops: I'm in a similar position. I've had my red OG 3DS since early 2012 and so far have only needed to replace the battery at one point. It's still in pretty decent shape, but I'd like to upgrade sooner or later to ensure that I'll be able to play my 3DS library for years to come.
My problem is that I'm one of those who still has to choose between the cost and that sexy 3D....
@Silly_G I’m also surprised the 3DS and Switch haven’t had any kind of connectivity yet. If they do, that would solve the problem of how to move Pokémon from previous generations over to generation eight when it launches next year. It would make perfect sense.
Very gamecubey
I'm still not sure what they are trying to do with all those 3DS XL. The whole point of the 3DS was the 3D. Is it to transition to a future replacement to the 3DS that doesn't have 3D or is it a way to sell as many as they can before killing it for good?
Getting this for my daughter, she would love it. Unless they decide to release it in pink. Then that would be right up her alley.
Looks pretty nice
...The circle pad on my N3DS I feel is crapping out, may just get one of these at some point.
(without the bundle of course, this one anyways)
@Rhaoulos
"Is it to transition to a future replacement to the 3DS that doesn't have 3D or is it a way to sell as many as they can before killing it for good?"
Probably the second one.
So there's a new 2DS XL? Wait...is it a new 2DS XL or a New 2DS XL? I mean we already had a New 2DS XL so this isn't very news worthy, but if it's a new 2DS XL that would be amazing to come out with an XL version of the 2DS, but then I don't know who would buy a 2DS XL when they could get a New 2DS XL for the same money with better features, even if it's new. Wait, is this a new New 2DS XL? Why didn't they just say so?
@thesilverbrick : Cross-generational transitions of Pokémon is being handled externally via Pokémon Bank, so there won't be any direct way of connecting between the 3DS games and any Switch releases. The Generation 4 & 5 titles were the last to support direct offline connectivity.
As a result of The Pokémon Company opting for this online-based model, it will be impossible to transfer Pokémon from generations 3-7 to Switch once the 3DS servers are terminated.
Those poor 3DS/2DS collectors are going to have like 10 copies of Mario Kart 7....
It would be nice to see Nintendo make a 2DS/XL bundle that includes Smash 3DS. I know they likely wouldn't so they could maximize Switch hype and sales. There's a solid bunch of games on 3DS that could move units if they were bundled together like MK7
@Silly_G I imagine that because it’s part of a paid service, Pokémon Bank may continue to function on 3DS even after the other online gaming servers are terminated. Things like Netflix and Hulu still work on the original Wii, despite all other online functionality going down.
@Tops: Same here. There are things that I like and dislike about both builds, so I've also been playing the "Wait and see" game. I'm starting to think that the lack of a new 3D system in some time means that Nintendo is going full 2DS until further notice.
I'd most like to have a normal sized New 3DS, but....
a 2ds with a gba slot at the bottom would have been better.
The way to get me to pick up one more 3/2DS would be to release one more model, with a nicer screen (one that can go a little brighter, close to the Switch levels) and like @Garydbz25 said, give us a Game Boy Slot. While they are at it, make it entirely region free.
Other than that, the only way I'd consider buying yet another one would have to be a really special, special edition. Something that really impresses me. Purple as about as boring to me as it gets. Any basic color scheme at this point is.
I love the New 2DS XL color schemes, but none of the clamshell designs are as comfortable for me to hold/play as the regular 2DS, so I shall stick with that one until the end of days.
@thesilverbrick Bank exists, so that's going to be their plan going forward.
When they have a game that launched in 2011 as a selling point, you KNOW it has a weak release lineup now!
@thesilverbrick I believe that was an option with the Wii U and the 3ds. That would be interesting if they could make that happen here as well..
Tempting as they are, I'm afraid it's no deal Nintendo. You made the Xl I got in 2012 too darn well. Still up and kicking to this day, so I've got no reason to grab to a new one.
“We want to give people a variety of options and price points when shopping for themselves or the Nintendo fans in their lives," Reggie then went on to say, "unless what they want is a normal-sized New 3DS. Seriously, who do these people think they are? Go big or go home. 'MURICA!"
Classy. Like a lady's accessory. Or a pimp's.
@1UP_MARIO That would be me.
As a collector of the 3DS family of systems, this both makes me happy and sad haha. That purple is a great colour.
@Tops It was only released over a period of about 18 months. The first bundles for the New Nintendo 3DS came out in the fall of 2015. There was the Happy Home Designer then the Black Friday White/Black editions. To this day, that Black Friday run of consoles is the only black edition launched in North America. After that they had the Pokemon 20th in 2016 and then a Super Mario 3D Land bundle and that came out in the summer. The console didn't receive many restocks in early 2017 and then Nintendo announced it was discounting the smaller version. It was cancelled in July 2017 as the New 2DS XL prepared to launch.
@Tops: Agreed. It would definitely be my upgrade of choice due to the portability. The New 3DS definitely wasn't pushed here in North America nearly as much as the XL; IMO I think the outcry against them not having it to begin with is why the limited bundles detailed above showed up.
I would have loved one of the Black Friday black or white editions, but those were snapped up faster than you can say "Mario". I should have grabbed the Happy Home Designer bundle when I had the chance at one point, but I'm not really into Animal Crossing. Unfortunately, the only systems I have been able to find online are at ridiculous prices, so I'm willing to swallow my pride by now and grab a XL.
@Tyranexx Don't give up hope. I see them posted in Facebook groups all the time. If you live in the US, there is an awesome group called DS/3DS Collectors of America. I see them get posted in their fairly regularly and they aren't crazy expensive.
@Nintendofan83: I'll continue keeping an eye out. Thanks!
@justin233 I have a Pokemon X/Y Blue 3DS XL and while I think it would be neat to get a New 3DS XL, I find that my current one does its job well. I really do like that orange 2DS XL though. The colors are nice and almost cute, sort of reminding me of an orange dream bar.
