Two-man indie developer Sinister Cyclops has announced that Spartan - a 2D action-platformer - will be running and jumping its way onto Nintendo Switch next month.
Inspired by the likes of Ghosts 'n Goblins and Battletoads, Spartan aims to replicate the brutally challenging platformers of years gone by without resorting to the use of 8-bit graphics. Using a much more modern and fresh aesthetic, the game places you deep inside Sparta, 500 BC, where the city-state's weapons, armour and gold have mysteriously vanished. As a king and the world's most fearsome warrior, you (as Leonidas) must set out to discover who is behind the threat, and recover everything that was stolen.
FEATURES
- Powered by UE4.
- Memorable atmospheric soundtrack with ethnic overtones.
- Crisp and detailed handcrafted art.
- Hyper-smooth 2D physics based mesh animations.
- Fun, intelligent and reactive enemies.
- A huge variety of traps and obstacles.
The trailer above was for the game's original release on other platforms last year, but you can get a great sense of what it's all about by giving it a watch.
Spartan is scheduled to release on Nintendo Switch on 1st April in North America, with a price point of $11.99 - European release details are still to be confirmed.

Reminds me of Mac & Joe. Looks great, but what exactly are “pixel-perfect controls”?!?
I'm sorry, but this looks really scrappy to me. Like some free flash game.
The game looks like it could be fun but not a fan of the art style at all. Wish they had gone 16bit with this one. This is one of the reasons why so many indies go for the retro look, they would end up looking something like this otherwise. Just wish more chose 16bit rather than 8bit.
That said, it's an action platformer instead of the usual puzzle platformer that most indies like to make so if the game is fun, I'll buy it.
Ewwwww
Looks fun, but it must be really cheap. If it is chances are I'll buy it
Eh. I mean, it DOES look like a game from the 8/16-bit era with a more polished aesthetic. The problem is that it looks to play like one of the third tier games that people tend to forget about the minute they put the controller down.
Gonna have to pass on this one. Art style doesn't look appealing and the gameplay seems a tad generic.
It's the jump that bugs me. You can tell if a game will "feel" right by in about 3 seconds after pressing the jump button. From the videos, it looks super floaty and in imprecise. I'd have to give it a try, but it doesn't look promising to me.
This looks absolutely horrendous!
Thanks, but no thanks.
Needs major art direction overhaul. Reminds me of early 2D PC games with higher resolution than consoles but a very limited color palette (EGA?) because otherwise why would they choose these colors to go together?
Otherwise, looking past that, the gameplay looks relatively solid. It was hard to see at first, but it looks responsive and probably fun.
Probably this team needs a third person to bring some aesthetics that don't hurt the eyes.
looks kinda bad, but I could be surprised!
@Monkeido Exactly my thoughts. Looks like something I played online for free like 15 years ago.
Looks kinda rough TBH.
$2.00 and I'm sold.
The video isn't available. No wonder, it looks like ass (looked it up on youtube)!
