Buried within Nintendo of America's download update press release today was the following nugget on a new My Nintendo reward available in the region - a calendar designed with Ultra Street Fighter II: The Final Challengers in mind.
My Nintendo in North America is offering a May calendar featuring the "supreme master of the fist", Akuma.
To be honest we think this deserves a bit of gentle mockery, as what it actually delivers is a wallpaper, which we've seen a few of in recent times. In exchange for 50 Platinum Points you get access to the usual range of sizes:
It's a calendar in the same way this cute cardboard Switch is a game console - it wants to be one, but has no actual functionality. You can't edit it or even scribble on it (unless you want to ruin your screen). But hey, it looks cool and will remind you when the game's out!
Unfortunately this wallpaper isn't yet on the European My Nintendo site, so for now you North American gamers can lord it over us with your bad-ass Akuma desktop backgrounds.

I think I'm going to skip SF Ultra on release too. I love the series but £35 just feels too much, especially when SFV is £15.
I seen that earlier on Neogaf when I was looking for the eShop PR update earlier, it went down well there. A whole month out of the year. This game is really spoiling us.
I dig it because it reminds me of when I'll be on vacation at the beach!! Bring on the month o' May!
My Nintendo is so awful. Like the website is cute and all but the rewards are not so great. It would be nice if the coins could actually be used to get exclusive merch or something. Like if you got a certain number of coins you could get an irl Mario plushie? They did have 3DS themes, a switch version of that could be very cool...
Nah sticking to my Wind Waker backround, nothing can change that
@Jack_Goetz street fighter five came out a long time ago right? This is a new release.
Why can't we have a switch theme??
Meh, Ryu for the win.
Also if they are going to highlight the Heaven kanji they should have had him turned around with his back facing and the symbol on his back.
lol wut
what utter BS. Nintendo can shove it
Well, I love collecting wallpapers (I have over 300 on PC), so I guess this is a nice way to use up spare Platinum Coins.
@bezerker99 lucky
Tmw Akuma's artwork here is more menacing than his artwork in SFV's story mode ;v
@Jack_Goetz I'm not saying USF2:TFC is worth £35. But SFV is £15 because it was naff...
@faint Well yeah, if a year is a long time to you... This is a new lick of paint on a 26 year old game, so it should be in line with the pricing of other remasters from that time, such as Full Throttle or Day of the Tentacle.
@Switch81tch I have no idea what you are talking about. I suppose that's the point of an in joke phrase. You would rather catch the other off guard than have a discussion or debate.
@Jack_Goetz it's new paint, several new modes, new online plus features, new rebalancing, new music, ect etc etc. You sound like the folks claiming splatoon 2 is a port.
Is it really that hard for them to come up with something worth spending platinum points on? Like 5 percent off any game. Make it a thousand points. At least it'd be something that's not a lame wallpaper for my smartphone/desktop.
Cool? 😕
A calendar picture is not a calendar because you can't edit it or even scribble on it.
Suddenly I feel SO old...
Mynintendo. Lol.
...I think Nintendo needs a calendar, what year is it?..who gives a one month calendar wallpaper these days anyway...talk about a waste of time...
However will I save enough points for all these awesome rewards?
oh...
I love Akuma, but this is actual garbage.
@Sakura I'm the same.
No wonder my Mii isn't happy. Every month points are expiring with nothing to spend them on.
Edit: Is the calendar dated from May 1991?
@Jack_Goetz This doesn't work the same as remastering the graphics on a old platformer. The game has been rebalanced, tech throwing added, and two new characters added. Before you shout palette swap, ER hasn't been in SFII and he does have a different moveset/timing to Ryu (Ryu main who doesn't like Evil Ryu over here) and VK was introduced in SVC and never seen again (in a fighting game)...he also wasn't playable. This is a new edition of SFII. Might not be worth the price to you (it is to me) and that is fine if it isn't, but please don't dismiss the changes made just because this might not be your cup of tea.
The only thing I have ever spent points on was the Zelda Picross game. Since then everything has been garbage.
Even the game discounts are useless, since you have to buy games to get them, it leaves you with nothing to use the discount on.
@Switch81tch ah I do apologize.
That's a personal low on the wallpaper front. The others are at least useful for more than 31 days this year.
Dang, Sliggy's mii isn't even happy playing SNES games on mynintendo. 😄
At first I saw the picture on the front page and thought, "Oooh! Street Fighter calendar!"
Then I saw that it was coming from My Nintendo, and thought "Oh wait, they don't do physical rewards, do they?"
Then I read into the article and saw it's a wallpaper and thought, "Well surely they're going to have at least the full year, right?"
And then I read more and saw that wasn't the case... COME ON MY NINTENDO! First they sell game discounts instead of full games you can redeem with points, then a bunch of wallpapers which can be easily reposted (and if anyone has this one, please point it my way).
It's all in all a bunch of crap nobody wants. And nobody would get it if it weren't for the short shelf life your points have.
#BringBackClubNintendo
Lol. I'm pretty sure this is their dumbest "reward" to date.
RIP Club Nintendo...
Oh wait. This is only for 1 month.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE And yet we're still holding on just in case something great comes along :_p
It does seem to be pretty clear that MyNintendo is to most people more a continuation of the mobile brand-awareness scheme than a loyalty/reward scheme. This "calendar" is rather indicative of that; it's a promotion to advertise the game's release.
I can see MyNintendo being useful for new all-digital consumers, but beyond that there isn't much to praise, even considering it is available in more countries.
To be fair, some of the rewards have been okay (Wario and LoZ theme), but it doesn't hold a candle to Club Nintendo.
@faint Ok, well whatever you value the new modes to be worth is up to you. For me, they're not worth the current asking price and I'm pretty sure that if this was coming to other consoles it'd be 33% less (much like Puyo Puyo Tetris on PS4).
@Jack_Goetz Puyo Puyo Tetris is the exact same price digitally. The switch version is the special edition version with a slip case and keychains. The other consoles didn't get these and they do have value.
@faint The Switch version in Europe didn't get a slipcase or keychains and guess what, it's still £15 more expensive than the PS4 version. So that extra value you speak of, it doesn't exist over here (not that a slipcase and keychain would be worth an extra £15 anyway). It's literally £35 (PS4 version £20) because it's on Switch.
