Nintendo seems rather positive about the prospects of ARMS on Nintendo Switch, giving the game prominence at preview events and citing it as a potential breakthrough title in competitive gaming. It also appeals, of course, to nostalgia for Wii-era motion controls, as you punch and swing your arms to create extravagant moves on screen. We thought it had potential in our first impressions article.
Nintendo's Japanese YouTube channel has now released a couple of videos to show it off. The first takes a look at some of the game's characters, while the second drills down into detail on some of their distinct moves; both videos (though in Japanese) give a sense of the extensive strategy Nintendo hopes to see from players.
Are you keeping an eye on ARMS ahead of its arrival on Switch in Spring, or are you still unconvinced by it? Let us know in the comments.

Nice
Not a game for everyone but looks like bloody good fun
Really looking forward to this. Hope the motion controls work well.
I like the look of it but I hope it doesn't lack punch.
There's time to time tweak it but something feels off, it looks a bit clunky.
Maybe it's because they're just showing us the game,I really hope it is a bit more fluid.
Still looking like a lot of fun, hopefully it will have Splatfests.
I will buy it anyway as I loved Punch out and this looks like an extension of that.
I should add that I hope there's more characters levels and modes to give it some legs.
Man, this looks really good. Absolutely love the character designs and springs concept.
I really hope they launch it with a lot of content though, I don't want to see another barebones Splatoon launch.
I have to admit, these trailers present the game in a lot better way than reveal trailer and TV ads. You can see the variety of fighters and some customisation options, which should greatly affect gameplay. I'm really liking what I see here. Hope it will a good showcase for HD rumble as well.
I'm a big fan of the aesthetics, very much got an Overwatch feel, but still very dubious about the depth of anything so heavily based on motion controls.
Nintendo is really strong-arming this game's advertisement!
I'm warming up to this the more I see of it. It's a big maybe from me at launch
Well, I'm still not entirely convinced but it's definitely left me a bit more interested in the game than I initially was.
This game looks great! I hope it has lots of different modes and potentially something similar to Splatoon's plaza.
I like the look of this game but I hope there are many more dynamic level designs... I want something more that sets this game apart from wii ranged boxing... I think this game looks like fun but it has to have something to let it last, whether that be a more fleshed (Then what we've seen) multiplayer or even a campaign...
Looks like a lot of fun!! But I want to hear they nailed the motion controls and gameplay before a purchase.
They had me sold at Mario Kart team - those guys know how to put together a really fun title with excellent mechanics. This, Mario Kart 8 DX and Splatoon 2 will provide multiplayer goodness all the way to Xmas.
I was sceptical of this title at first, but then I recalled feeling the same way about the original Splatoon. Needless to say, it's on preorder.
Will give this one a miss but hope it does well. Maybe I will pick it up once the price drops, who knows.
I do agree that it does look a better game with the more info revealed. The initial showing was more like a game one would spend £35 for, not the rumoured £60/£65.
The Japanese narrator saying 'BEEEGA PONCH!' in the second video made me laugh
both Arms and Splatoon have the feeling of a gimmicky toy-line from the late 80's or early 90's.
and I love it.
I'm calling it: Spring Man and Ribbon Girl are siblings!
@Hotfusion £44 on shopto, £50 on Amazon. Tempted now?
It's an "Arms" race to get the game.
Pretty heavy co-promotion between Nintendo and the Switch CPU manufacturer ARM here.
So far, only Spring Man that catch my attention. I wanna use him oftenly.
For girls, I might try Ribbon Girl as I think she reminds me of Princess Peach in Ribbon costume.
@OzHuski I played it at the switch event last month and I can tell you that the motion control is very smooth and responsive. Feels infinitely better than any Wii boxing games I played.
I think this game has a lot of potential. I hope it has a lot more characters.
@Vegaphil dunno if I should be excited by your thoughts or jealous you got to play the Switch?!?!
I'll go with the Taco girl - why not both? 😜
Every fighter in ARMS feels like they got the Ultra Hands, a Gunpei Yokoi invention.
Super What Fighter II?
@Iggy-Koopa yeah...many of us Nintendo fans cry about Nintendo needs new IPs or they never create new IPs. They have with this and we should support it so Nintendo will continue giving us new franchises. It does look like a fun game.
@Peach64 as someone else said its a fighting/boxing game. You play against CPU or Friends.. You can play it with a pro controller as well.
The core gameplay does look great, but I need to see more modes and characters before I make up my mind.
Hopefully it'll take off the same way Splatoon did, although I don't think it will going by what we've seen so far.
Okay, these videos sealed the deal for me. I was already intrigued. But seeing now how you can punch around columns to reach an opponent who is hiding confirms to me there's a lot more depth to this than just throwing punches towards your TV.
Gonna get this ASAP (no pre-order, so I hope I can get a Switch and an extra set of Joy-Cons pretty soon after launch).
I don't think I'd play it over some of the other titles released at same time. If it gets really good reviews, maybe.
The launch trailer already sold me. I just hope the roster will include Lanky Kong with interesting gloves for example:gas blast, balloon burst and trombone solo!
@Nookingtons I have been seeing that comparison alot. I remember one use comparing it to Power Stone+ Punch Out.
I hope there is a possibility of a new Power Stone for the Switch or possibly the first two games on the eshop with Switch multiplayer functionality.
Every new character is better than the original two.
@audiobrainiac I'm really worried that the amount amount of characters shown is it. I would be more than happy to be wrong though. In fact... I want to be really wrong.
Getting this day one. From the day they announced I can only think of Spring Man debut on the next Smash
Looks even more amazing than before and I was already excited to play it from its reveal. Looking at the graphics, it looks a step above anything on Wii U.
@Ailingforale They've already said we can expect to see many more characters and modes than what we've seen so far. I'd guess there will be around 12 at launch with more coming in DLC.
Nintendo created this game because Switch uses ARMS chip... sad but true.
It just keeps getting better and better!
Do we know why these poor people don't actually have any arms yet? It's kind of creepy. Like a colourful version of Bio Freaks or something...
@Haywired probably the same mad scientists who said they discovered the inklings when we all know they genetically modified them.
Looks fun but I'm not sure I'll get it. Fighting games don't last me very long unless it's Smash Bros. I dunno. Maybe I'll end up getting it out of sheer lack of anything else to play. I would like to try it at least.
Need more info on game modes. Campaign? Online?
May just be a big hit for the Switch/
Eh. I wish Nintendo would invest in some quality single player games.
Splatoon was also a competitive multiplayer game. I know it had a single player, but it was forgettable.
@jaymacx EXACTLY.
liking the look of this. It's giving me a Virtual On vibe for some reason. I loved Virtual On.
Does it support voice chat online?
@OorWullie Well that makes me feel better.
The game looks good, but I don't really care for motion controls in games can this be played with the pro controller with out motion controls? If you can it will be a day one purchase for me.
@LUIGITORNADO Well Splatoon's single player wasn't that memorable indeed, but that final boss... One of the best boss fights in forever.
This game intrigues me a lot. Man Nintendo sure will make me buy another set of Joy-cons ahh.
The more I see of this game the more fun it looks. I would not pay $60 in any way, but this for $30? I would bite. I would still need to know the exact roster and how deep of a single player story mode there is.
I know some have said 1-2 Switch should have been a pack in, but I think ARMS would have been a much better pack in. It looks a better game, and something that causals could have fun playing. Those who want more of a challenge could also enjoy by implementing more strategy.
I'm interested but also not... the arms are... scary to me I think the designs are freakish lol. Maybe I'll try it in the future if it turns out amazing. But until then I am going no where near it.
@Peach64 no motion controls are required for this game.
Love that Nintendo would even dare to create a game like this. And that's why I love them- games like this don't even surprise me from them. It would from anyone else though.
Arms looks great. I'm dying for an in-depth motion game with modern motion technology. This is so it.
This looks like a lot of fun. I wonder if it's got much of a single-player story to it or just multiplayer really. Did Splatoon?
Shame the masses won't buy it due to the obscene price of buying extra controllers
@mowerdude yes you can.
@gcunit It does have a single player mode, though I'm not sure if it's a story mode/campaign. Might be an arcade mode. There is online.
ARMS will be my summer if Splatoon 2 waits until fall for release.
This looks so dang good.
@Peach64 I am getting way more of a Power Stone vibe from this game than anything else.
@WiltonRoots I forgot about Virtual On. Now that I think about it, all these Arms videos do make me think of VO and the Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi games on Wii.
@IceClimbers Thanks
For me it depends on the singleplayer content. I don't often get the chance to play local multiplayer and I don't really like playing online.
Looks fun. I like the Overwatch-ian character designs, and the move set seems interesting and unique for each of the fighters.
I hope Arms takes off and brings some innovation into the fighting genre, much like what Splatoon did for shooters.
@Shambo I totally agree with you about the Splatoon Final Boss Fight! Bring on DJ Octavio Amiibo!
Yay, more Arms stuff!
I'm actually really stoked for this title. Its initial reveal was dry for me; but as more footage was shown, I became hooked. It's character designs is unique too! Hopefully we can see even more interesting fighters in this unique off the wall universe!
@beazlen1
Let's say for £44 it is defo worth a reconsider.
Thanks very much for that piece of information.
@maceng
I thought the same thing because their eyes are similar. But then I looked at the ninja guy and mummy and they have similar eyes too.
I tried it at the Switch event last month and the motion controls are on point, very much like Virtual On but you're holding the twin sticks in the air. And twisting the Arms in mid-punch becomes second nature really quickly. Springman's Boomerang Arm is ridiculously good, though it's a bit weak. I wish I had more time experimenting with more of the Arms. I'm not even sure what Ribbon Girl's party popper arm does! But yeah, I'm on the same boat with others in that I need to see what the other stages and characters are about. I don't want this to run out of steam like 1, 2, Switch will inevitably do after a few sessions.
I really like the look of this, it's also encouraging to see an interesting new IP nice and early
Looks really fun. One of the games i'm most interested in trying for the switch.
This games looks alright. There's isn't enough variety in the gameplay to entice me. Even with the changing gloves mechanic it still looks very basic. Not enough frenetic combos for me. If the designed the characters to move like say, Luffy in one piece: Burning Blood, then I'd be more interested.
I believe this game is designed as more of a showcase for their HD rumble technology. It has to be slow moving so I get it. The game isn't designed with people like me in mind.
This looks awesome. I hope there's an actual single player campaign, like what Punch Out games have. I don't want to only play random fights or multiplayer all the time.
If only inspector Gadget was a hidden character.
More fighters to be added:
Rubber Boy
Ultra Hands Gal
Cable Guy
Vine Master
Origami San (paper)
Calling it!
@BigWhoady Yes, but both have the same color!
@maceng
I'm thinking they're related too but if we go by eye color and design alone, then that would suggest that ninja guy and mummy would be related cause they also have the same eyes.
@Macheng It would be great if Omega Red could be in the game.
Yeah I wasn't impressed with the first trailer but this has grown on me. I felt the same exact same way about Splatoon when it was initially shown and that turned out great so I have high hopes for this now.
So is the world of ARMS where people with amputated arms go participate in a sport where then large mechanical arms and beat each other senseless?
Shovelware: The Game.
