We're not quite sure why, but the Nintendo Download Update details for Europe have been elusive today; thankfully the ever generous Daan Koopman has forwarded the Dutch press release that finally came through, and Kenneth Jensen then provided UK prices. In any case, this week comes with an enticing animation programme on 3DS, a bit of retro Konami action and more besides - let's get to it.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Dragon Skills (Joindots, €6.39 / £5.43 until 9th February, normally €7.99 / £6.79)
Island Flight Simulator (Joindots, €6.39 / £4.79 until 9th February, normally €7.99 / £5.99)
Sweetest Thing (Joindots, €5.59 / £4.39 until 9th February, normally €6.99 / £5.49)
Wii U eShop Permanent Discounts
Hot Rod Racer (ZeNfA Productions, €0.99 / £0.89, previously €2.99 / £2.69)
ZacisA: Defense of the Crayon Dimensions! (ZeNfA Productions, €1.49 / £1.19, previously €2.99 / £2.29)
3DS eShop
Butterfly: Inchworm Animation II (Flat Black Films, €7.99 / £7.19) - An impressive-looking follow-on from Inchworm Animation on DSiWare, this entry supports more complex tools and stereoscopic 3D. Whether animating drawings, stop-motion or a mixture of both, it looks to have smart features; you can even record sound effects. Perhaps most impressively it has online sharing linked to butterflyanimation.com.
Mini Golf Resort (Teyon, €4.99 / £4.49) - As this is Mini Golf the focus is on finding the right angles and timing for getting through tricky challenges. Ultimately this promises character customisation, 1001 holes on 56 courses (across four worlds) and plenty of bonuses to collect.
Word Search 10K (Lightwood Games, €7.99 / £5.99) - Another word game from the eShop masters of the genre, this one pitches itself as one enormous word search that covers a lot of topics; it apparently has 10,000 words hidden in a grid of 90,000 letters, split into 100 sections. That's a lot of searching for words...
Candy, Please! (Nostatic Software, €2.25 / £1.99) - Originally a part of The Quiet Collection on Wii U but missing from the Quiet, Please! collection that recently came to 3DS, this one gives you plenty of themed items to find throughout a neighbourhood, naturally while dressed up for the Halloween season.
New Nintendo 3DS Virtual Console
Castlevania: Dracula X (Konami, €7.99 / £7.19) — The SNES port of the PC Engine's Castlevania: Rondo of Blood makes its way to the portable. It doesn't stand up to many of its series contemporaries, in our opinion, as we explain in our Castlevania: Dracula X review.
3DS eShop Temporary Discount
Fantasy Pirates (EnjoyUp Games, €1.35 / £1.35 until 23rd February, normally €4.50 / £4.50)
RV-7 My Drone (EnjoyUp Games, €0.89 / £0.89 until 2rd February, normally €2.99 / £2.99)
Toys Vs. Monsters (EnjoyUp Games, €1.19 / £1.19 until 23rd February, normally €3.99 / £3.99)
Van Helsing sniper Zx100 (EnjoyUp Games, €1.99 / £1.99 until 23rd February, normally €6.66 / £6.66)
Kutar Apple (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
Kutar Burger Factory (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
Kutar End Credits (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
Kutar Powder Factory (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
Kutar Ski Lift (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
3D Game Collection (CIRCLE Entertainment, €0.69 / £0.69 until 9th February, normally €0.99 / £0.99)
Atlantic Quest (Joindots, €5.59 until 9th February, normally €6.99)
Secret Agent Files: Miami (Joindots, €6.39 / £4.79 until 9th February, normally €7.99 / £5.99)

And still no sign of the Pokemon Bank update...
Pants!
@TheHumbleFellow IKR? You would think Gamefreak/Nintendo would have made some announcement since they kept saying "January 2017" for release.
Oh I can't wait for March when we'll be swimming in weekly updates worth having! (hopefully)
But you know, one thing I really hope Nintendo do with VC on Switch is dump the whole lot of existing games on the console at launch. Or a fairly big chunk of it. Can't be bothered with drip feeding games every week and waiting a year to be able to download something I had on Wii U years ago. Hopefully we don't have to pay for them again either, but I'm not holding my breath on that...
Meh, oh look no new games on Wii U, it is well and truly dead now isn't it
@ThomasBW84 I have the prices in both € and £ in the PR-material that I received 3-4 hours ago. I'l send it to you ASAP
You know how we have bad weeks? This is bad even for a bad week.
Is there any need for the sarcastic remarks about this to keep going?
The Switch is less than a month and a half away... of course the eshop will be slowing down until then.
2 pieces of news: Square Enix has announced that I am Setsuna will be a launch game in the West as well, although digital only, which confirms that the E-shop should be up.and running day one. I've also emailed THQ Nordic about Darksiders II on the Wii U and they said it will be out before the end of March, although I was hoping it would be out before the Switch launch, as it will definitely impact its sales
Inchworm Animation II could be worth a look.
And there's me thinking we were all out of VC games. Is this pretty much us caught up with everyone or a few more left hoping they're not forgotten?
@gortsi Thanks for the Darksiders news; I was just thinking about that game. If it is indeed still coming to Wii U, I'll be getting it at launch.
@RainbowGazelle you're welcome, I want to get it too, it's probably going to be the final Wii U retail game, unless we get Just Dance 18 or another Lego, which I doubt. Amazon UK's preorder price is 14,99 reckon it's a bargain!

Nothing for me this week, I'll just continue playing Shantae: Half-Genie Hero for another few weeks then.
Nothing for me this week, on the plus side that's money saved for the Switch!
There might be nothing going on the eShop atm but this is the week of four of my most anticipated jrpgs of the year - FOUR!! Picked up DQ8 just today, tomorrow is Kingdom Hearts 2.8, and on friday Digimon World Next Order and Tales of Berseria.
@TheHumbleFellow
I have retrieved some further logs after the ones I reported last time.
Trainer's Log, day 92
"Steve is officially off the deep end. After his first delirious fit, he started rambling about that Bank from earlier, once again. He saw an Alolan Exeggutor and started screaming, while holding his head. We were ready this time and we sedated him with all the tranquilizers we had. I couldn't clearly understand his words, but it sounded like he was trying to say that Alolan Exeggutors just look like regular palm trees, and that a real Exeggutor is supposed to be plump.
His cold sweating couldn't stop, and a local expert, who doesn't wear anything under his lab coat for some reason, said that state of nostalgia was terminal and the Bank he was waiting for wouldn't arrive in time. We were given a choice, either let him live his final days in agony or spare him the pain by giving him euthanasia. After a heated debate, we ultimately chose the latter would be for the better.
Steve couldn't breathe normally anymore, so we thought he could go at least out with a smile and chose to dress up our Salamence (thank Arceus they have the Bagon line here) as a Charizard, or as Steve said, "a non-teasing, rideable, actual Charizard". We said that Charizard would give him mouth-to-mouth and he said with a tearful smile "the Bank came, it came at last". Those were his final words before Salamence gave him a mouth-to-mouth, which equaled a Dragon Breath attack down his throat. The funerals will be held next Sunday.
I also punched our Kanto-born Meowth in a fit of rage this morning, although I immediately apologized to it. Thankfully Pokémon are loyal, trustful partners, and as such our poor pet understood. I believe I'm in the first stage of whatever caused Steve his untimely demise. I just bank the want to come here, I mean, I just want the Bank to come here. Here bank bank, I want the bank. Bank? Bank."
@gortsi I've had a pre-order update from Base.com telling me that Darksiders Warmastered Edition is now due for release on 30th June 17. Price is £12.85.
The Wii U sales are rubbish. Glad Nintendo has sorted out its pricing strategy for the Switch.
89 % voting "Nothing for me this week". That's the highest it's ever been I think?
@PGS_71 well my info comes from the developers themselves. Amazon lists it for December 31 as well, but I think these are just placeholder dates
@gortsi I found it for only £12.85 on base.com. I've never used them before. I wonder if they're any good.
@RainbowGazelle I've used them a few times, they are solid.
Meh. Castlevania : Dracula X is a great game ... on PC Engine.
Not this poor SNES adaptation.
Come on Nintendo, the PC Engine version was available on Wii VC...
NOTHING
@smashboy2000 I came here to say the same thing. When I saw it said "Dracula X!" on the front page I was hoping it was the Turbografx rondo of blood since it was on the Wii VC and they recently got a few TG16 games on WiiU.
Alas
Here is hoping that Super Smash Bros. for N64 comes out for Wii U before the Switch launches. This week and all of February I am going to be playing catch up on Wii U game releases and virtual console.
@Menchi187 Alas....
Let's hope it will be on Switch !
Lovely week we're having.
snorts
Bye bye WiiU. It was fun while it lasted.
Wait, Butterfly? With online sharing?
Hello, version-of-Flipnote-Studio-that-actually-came-out. Hope you like money.
Wii u was indeed a lot of fun. Yet there's not much left for me to buy.
I'll remember the Wii u as one of the best consoles I've ever played. Great games, insane amounts of fun, incredible quality games and art.
The eshop update sucks though.
I'm allover Inkworm Animation I reckon, been looking forward to that.
Well have to check out the mini golf game too. 1001 holes!
@ThomasBW84 Have you got any intel on whether Tadpole Treble will ever get a UK Wii U release?
The f**k Nintendo!? Why Dracula X instead of the far, far, far superior Rondo of Blood? I mean, really.
Luckily I just got DQ8 so I should be busy till Switch arrives. Hopefully Nintendo get their act together with weekly sales on Switch, PSN has something worthwhile on sale nearly every week.
Wow, they've really outdone themselves this week.
Mini Golf! Sounds great and I love the word search games so 2 for me this week i think.
stunning
Only 35 days until the Nintendo Downloads should get interesting again, with the launch of the Switch at the end of that week.
Well, I hope they get interesting again. They can't get worse than some of the weeks we've had, right?
@Baker1000 my thoughts exactly. But yea don't hold your breath waiting on Nintendo man!! The fact that the vc service isn't even ready for the Switch launch alone makes me think we won't like how this part turns out! 😞
Glad to see this game added to the launch day but it doesn't change the fact that the launch lineup is still very light!! Cmon Nintendo line em up!! No long software gaps!!
@gortsi Thanks for the info. I'll give them a try.
@joey302 it's not ready for launch? Where did this get confirmed?
@Baker1000 my gut feeling....being it wasn't mentioned at the Switch presentation at all and add the fact that it wasn't ready when Wii U launched either, it looks doubtful. I'll be surprised if it's ready to go day 1. Hopefully I'll be incorrect but knowing Nintendo...😞
@AlexSora89 Not sure if you knew about that but Flipnote Studio 3D came out in the West like a year ago (well, we had waited for few years, but it's here now). And it's available to download from My Nintendo again.
@KTT
I'll see if I can download it then.
Also, you're not fooling anyone - trolling fellow Pokémon fans when you have a Typhlosion as your profile pic? Yeah, right!
@AlexSora89 It costs 200 Platinum coins if I recall correctly. In European My Nintendo, that is.
Hey, I'm bitter and I like pokemon games. Combine those and you'll get some nice cynical comments
Edit: btw, Serebii says it has some info about Pokemon Bank. I know you are eager to transfer your Articuno so the wait may end soon.
@KTT
[rushes to Serebii]
@SanderEvers @TheHumbleFellow @SanderEvers @AlexSora89 @KTT Chinese have already delivered informations about the pokémon bank new version:
http://serebii.net/bankup1.jpg (I really want Mewtwo with a GB tattoo !!),
http://serebii.net/bankup2.jpg
From Serebii.net
@smashboy2000 @Menchi187 @Pazuzu666 Isn't the PCe one already available... in the japanese 3DS e-shop?
@AlexSora89 Sorry about the double warning but...
non-alolan pokémon are now free to circulate through the GTS (I wanted to get some shiny pokémon on the GTS, the owner was asking for a Rayquaza, tried to send mine copied from Alpha and it worked)
@Rei
You serious?!
Squirtle, here I come!!!
@Rei @AlexSora89 The bank is released now (I guess you'll see that on the front page but whatever).
1-2 gen 'IVs' differs from the modern IV. I was curious how the thing will work but they went with easy way: random stats assigned to the Kanto 'mons. It's more like a recreating the pokemon rather transfering... But that GB mark is hot!
@KTT
I found out this morning and prepared my final Trainer's Log in advance. Check out the Bank Update article.
@KTT The weirdest part is the way the nature is selected: it is based on the experience level of the monster when it's transfered. If I understand it right: level 100? hasty ! (example)
The EVs resetting is making training inside the original ROM useless.
@Rei Wikipedia says the while the JP 3DS VC store has indeed got several PC Engine titles, Rondo of Blood is not one of them. They do have the SNES/SFC port though
@AlexSora89 Hey! In fact, I saw the log yesterday, almost live as you posted it Thanks for heads up.
@Rei I heard the last two digits of the experience influences the nature. Didn't checked it tho.
The EVs makes sense actually. The way how the Stat Experience in gen 1-2 worked, would produce a broken modern pokemon. To simplify, you could max out each stat. That would translate to around 1530 EVs total (all 6 stats maxed), nowadays (instead of 510).
You either cut this down/randomize (this would need additional calculations to be programmed) or just ignore the stat experience.
Since battling scene experienced huge changes during those 20 years, you most likely want the EV resetted anyway. Besides, it's way way easier and faster to EV train in modern games.
@KTT
The trainers made it out of the crisis completely unharmed, but what will happen with the intertwining timelines? Why are the logs unaffected?
Tune in the next time the Pokémon Bank makes us wait before allowing us to access it with newer games, for more episodes of...
Trainer's Log
@KTT Thank you. So it's almost impossible to send the pokémon at the right time for the wanted nature.
About the Evs, I understand now why my old pokémon seem so strong in comparison. (i just thought I had bad luck in more recent games)
@Rei It is the opposite. You can manipulate the EXP to get the deserved Nature. I did a quick search out of curiousity and found this guide: https://daily.pokecommunity.com/2017/01/25/pokemon-stats-red-blue-yellow-recalculated/
Seems like the two digit rumour was false. Instead, it is a formula to calculate, and to predict, the Nature of your 'mon. Either way, people are confirming that you can get whatever Nature you want.
Keep in mind that influencing the Stat Experience worked differently in 1-2 gen, EV training you are familiar with did not exist, and IVs (DVs) had maximum value 15 (instead of 31).
If you are interested in the topic, I recommend reading a Bulbapedia or Serebii articles about DV, IV, EV and Stat Experience
@KTT Actually, I am more familiar with training pokémon over lv.100 basic stats on GB than on any other console. ^^"
Anyway, thanks a lot !
