The Castlevania-inspired Slain: Back From Hell may not be making its way to the Wii U after all.
The PC version was delayed earlier this year due to its intense difficulty, and that had a knock-on effect on the confirmed console ports - which included the Wii U.
However, Developer Wolf Brew Games - which is already working on Slain 2 - has now stated that it cannot confirm if the Wii U version is happening at all, and cites low sales on the console as an issue:
No, we can't confirm Wii U date, or that it is happening just yet. We were hoping it would but sales on that platform are just too weak to justify the port from what we have seen.

Didn't even know this existed. This also isn't anything new. Just add it to the pile of all the games that said they might be coming to wii u but ultimately never did
Shock horror.
Of course it's cancelled. Nintendo stopped making new games for Wii U years ago(PM:CS its last exclusive came out weeks ago) so why would indies and third parties carry the can?
Thank God Yooka-Laylee is still coming to Wii U. Playtonic Games went about things the right way.
When Susan Boyle read this news, her jaw dropped
I can't blame them...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE cough Color Splash... cough Breath of the Wild... cough Super Mario Maker... cough Splatoon.
@G-Boy Cough cough cough Those games started production years ago. I perhaps could have phrased it better. How many games came out this year? None of them you could say were AAA or that Nintendo tried their utmost with them.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE cough The Wii U... cough was only released three years ago.
@G-Boy Try 2012 even.......get some Benilyn. You appear to have a nasty cough
@G-Boy I'm 98% sure the Wii U came out in 2012, so it's not really 2 years ago.
Was planning on stickin' around to read new comments but it seems there may be a highly contagious coughing bug associated with this article.
I guess that's what ultimately influences ports above the hardware factor. GBA and DS didn't hold a candle to their home contemporaries spec-wise but they saw titles like Baldur's Gate, Driv3r and NFS Carbon which the respective companies tried to bring over in any form they could. Then again, getting sales to the point where they become sufficient is a matter where third party support itself (and consequently, more game library diversity) factors in. It's all intertwined.
Yes, Captain Obvious has saved the day again.
I'm shocked. Like really
Sonuva...
Was looking forward to this but I'm not surprised at all. Waiting for the news of Half Genie Hero being cancelled too.
It's only going to happen more and more.
Shrugs. Won't be missed for me.
Probably accurate for a game like this. Only some stuff does good on Nintendo nowadays.
@A01 Actually it's really quite hard to estimate sales potential of a game on any given platform. Nintendo don't give any indication of sales of other 3rd party dev's games. Nor stats like DAU for eShop. So you basically have to ask around other devs & hope they're kind enough to share their numbers. Those numbers can themselves be from some time ago / whenever they released their last game. The numbers you do get will be for games of different genres/target audiences, marketing budgets and quality to your own. Random events like a new AAA game being announced can come without warning on the day/week you decide to launch.
And of course, all those numbers change over time.
I'm a little disappointed, but not too much. The game didn't exactly get rave reviews. In fact after its Steam launch it was kind of considered a disaster. They've since patched it up to make it decent, but I still don't think the end result was anything more than an average quality game.
Didn't know about this but looks like something I would've bought. Oh well, my external hard disk drive suffered the fatal error so I have to start all of my games over again. Plenty to do before The NS comes out.
Also, for those of you wondering, it was Error 160-0103 a.k.a. corrupted data. My Wii U was a Basic Launch Edition. So yeah, surprised it didn't happen years ago.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE @G-Boy Do you guys need a throat lozenge?
@manpretty
I still might get it on PS4 but yeah not as great as I thought it would be.
Apparently, eShop versions of indie games sell very well, so I can't see why they won't do it. I really can't imagine that the Wii U audience would be any less than PS4 or Xbox One - at least for this type of game. Indeed, I get the impression that these arcade-style 'gamey' games are much more popular with Nintendo audiences.
Also baffling is their interest in bringing Slain to the Switch instead... a console with a grand total of zero users.
Put it on the Switch, I rather they did than put it on a system that is basically dead.
It would help a lot if Nintendo would jus say something about the future of Wii U eshoo games...prolly won't carry over but it would be nice to know.
considering how poorly recieved (initially) the PC version was, I don't blame them for cutting their loses somewhere.
Not a big loss. It's not like this game blows away any of the DS castlevania classics. Why play mediocre when you can play guaranteed great?
Gutted Slain looked really good and got that Castlevania feel about it but you never know maybe 1&2 will end up on the NS.
I'm also disappointed. I was interested in the game and pending reviews, I likely would have bought it, but I understand their decision - it might not be good business sense to port such a niche game to the Wii U with its smaller install base.
I.E "we tried for a little bit but we couldn't make the game run properly so we said meh we don't need em"
@SLIGEACH_EIRE
Oh, never mind Zelda coming to Wii U though that does seem to be last one as well as being a Switch title too.
Anyways, I heard Slain was pretty mediocre so no real loss for Nintendo fans. Just play Axiom Verge instead.
Maybe if you third party developers would actually MAKE games for a Nintendo system, maybe they'd sell better. Seriously, I'm so sick of seeing games released for every console, but the Nintendo one. I refuse to even buy any version of "Sonic Mania" unless it comes to a Nintendo system.
I might get this on ps4. It really sucks for gamers who wanted to experience this game on a Nintendo console. Maybe it will make it on the switch!
Wow just read this now! I wanted this game! First Yookah Laylee and now this.
