Some of you may be aware of The Mysterious Murasume Castle, an NES game developed by Nintendo that has received numerous references over the years. Though the original game was never localized, it nonetheless has popped up every now and then, such as in the Takamaru's Ninja Castle minigame in Nintendo Land or how Takamaru himself appeared as an assist trophy in Super Smash Bros.
Did You Know Gaming recently did a video on the classic, looking in depth at how the gameplay was structured and examining why it was never brought over to the west. It's a fascinating watch, and gives an interesting look at a game that has no doubt piqued the curiosity of many gamers over the years.
What do you think? Have you ever played this game? Would you like to see it get a sequel someday? Share your thoughts in the comments below.

I have played the 3DS virtual Console copy. Difficult title. I beat the first castle, I think I was in the second one when I stopped, interesting but challenging, not sure if I will return to finish it or not.
No I've never played it and as you say I'm mostly aware of its existence due to Smash Bros. and then NintendoLand. The game looks tough as nails and not in a good way either.
I think GameXplain did a better video on this not long ago, with their new-ish "Missing in Action" segment (which is a pretty neat little segment in itself btw). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a5nJPNbeSRc
And personally, I find the game to be pretty great, a very nostalgic reminder of how hard some games were and skill needed to beat them back in the day, and I do enjoy playing it from time to time.
As GameXplain's video suggest, I hope this is Nintendo exploring the idea of reviving this franchise, among others. Hell, GameXplain's video mentions that Hideki Kamiya is interested in the series, Platinum's typical Hack and Slash style games would be pretty perfect for this kind of game.
I have it on my 3DS, love this gem.
I'm not good at it, but its still very very fun. And confusing.
I've also got this on Virtual Console on 3DS.
Perhaps if I had played the game back in the day it would appreciate it a bit more.
Unfortunately, I just couldn't get into this. Annoyed me how the enemies re spawn... I know it's common for the era, but I had to save state and I just didn't have any fun.
I love the fact they released it in the west, though - after all these years!
I heard of Takamaru the first time when Shigeru Miyamoto helped in producing Samurai Warriors 3 for Wii and they put in the Mysterious Murasama Castle game mode. In my opinion, they should have released the original NES game on VC around the same time, but they've missed the opportunity. Again, and again, even on Wii U when Takamaru was in Nintendo Land.
However, all of this didn't take off, so for the next cooperation with KEOI TECMO Nintendo implemented Zelda in Warriors instead of Takamaru.
Hideki Kamiya expressed interest in doing another collaboration with Nintendo and doing a reboot/sequel to this game. I would love a modern version of this. A 3D action/adventure game set in feudal Japan, with some Platinum game action? I'm sold already.
I tried this game once.
It wasn't a pleasant experience.
I've been playing the game on and off on my Nintendo 3DS due to its immense difficulty, even from the get-go! The greater difficulty isn't from the bullet storm of the enemies, but rather the confusing dungeon crawling map.
From what I've seen of the gameplay it seems this was the evolution of the original The Legend of Zelda, as Super Mario Bros. was an evolution to the original arcade Mario Bros. Further developing an idea and vastly improving on the games gameplay and action.
