Niantic has teased some information regarding a new feature which is currently in development for Pokémon GO.
A new "Capture Bonus" system will make it easier to snag that rare 'mon, and is all based around type. Catching several different monsters of the same type will earn you medals, which will in turn grant you a bonus which makes it easier to catch that type in the future.
In the examples given by the developer, catching 10 Poison-type Pokémon grants a +1 capture bonus, while having 200 Fire-type catches earns you a +3 bonus.
Here's the official statement from Niantic:
We want to give you a sneak peek of a feature coming soon to Pokémon GO. We are adding a new feature which grants a catch bonus when you earn medals based on catching certain types of Pokémon (Kindler, Psychic, Gardener, etc.). These new bonuses will give you a better chance of capturing Pokémon with a related type. For example, as you reach a higher tier for the Kindler Medal, your bonus to catch Fire-type Pokémon such as Charmander, Vulpix and Ponyta increases.
Trainers can work their way to a new tier by catching many Pokémon of the same type. If a Pokémon has multiple types, your bonus will be the average of your bonuses for each type. For example, Pidgey is both Normal and Flying type. Your bonus in this case would be the average of your Normal-type and Flying-type bonuses.
It looks like this system is still in development so we might not see it for a while yet, but what are your thoughts initially? Let us know by posting a comment.

Everyone must be getting a 100% capture rate for Pidgey, Zubat and Drowzee.
Amazing. This is just the update I've been waiting for. I can't wait for it to be made easier to catch those Pidgeys...
I would be nice if they tone down the amount of Pidgey, Ratata and Zubats that appear in the game, then I'll go back to playing it.
Will it back date all my current Pokemon? Or will I have to start from scratch? I'm at 136 on my Pokedex and only really use the app for hatching 10K eggs and getting bulbasaur candies through the buddy system
I don't think this is top priority right now. But it does feel like this could be a filler update while we wait for the next big one.
I still think they should hurry and add in shineys soon. This alone would keep most people busy for all of winter, at the very least.
"300 Fire-type catches earns you a +3 bonus"
It says 200 in the picture...
the app randomly stopped working on my phone for some reason 🙁 I hope this update fixes it
Just add gen 2 Pokemon.
Or simply add in the evolutions for Gen 1 Pokemon added in later games.
So we would get every Eeveelution, every baby Pokemon as well as every Gen 2 and 4 evolution added (Scizor/Magmortar, etc).
Everyone I know has started to loose interest. I would rather they started on bigger updates like character customisation.
Or different backgrounds when your not on AR mode.
Still no tracking.
So they've made the grind more obvious? Pokémon Go is becoming worse than destiny for the grind vs rewards.
That said I still enjoy it. My local park is forever captured by the same trainers of the blue team. I take great pleasure in taking down their gyms then leaving a lichitung behind to troll them with.
This is nice, because I'm tired of wasting pokeballs on crap pokemon for stardust, but really, what they need is a better way to earn stardust.
@Raylax Surprisingly, no. I still get cp20 pidgeys that run away from me. You'd think being over lvl 20 myself and having caught 600 pidgeys would make catching these low lvl creatures easier. But sadly no. Glad something like this is finally getting put in place.
They need to add gen 2 or get cracking with a legendary event before people get bored. I spend most of my time catching pidgeys and walking around hatching eggs and now getting candy gor my buddy.
It's a smart move. It gives more of an incentive to catch common pokemon, and it should help to increase the variety of Pokemon so that I'll see more than just Pidgey and Rattata.
How about now that nobody is playing this and they don't have to worry about server overload anymore, they just add a usable and decent form of tracking, and the ability to submit pokestop/gym locations in areas which lack them? Oh wait, that would be giving people what they want, and Niantic would never do that.
@bngrybt Pretty sure their queue for filling gym/stop requests won't show up till they get rid of the backlog of people trying to sue them for Pokestops/Nests/Pokemon/Lack of Pokemon in their area.
...I'd rather have candy bonuses instead...
@Raylax Drowzee is that common? I've found one or two in my city but it wasn't until I traveled out of state that I actually found a bunch...
So badges will actually do something finally?
I need an update that will allow me to use AR mode without needing the gyrometer of a phone (cause well sadly, I have a phone without a gyrometer, so I "can't" play AR mode)
This is too little, too late. Not to mention I can't even play the game because Niantic blocks users with rooted phones for some bizarre reason.
A nice addition. Now having caught all those Pidgeys will give us an edge the next time we try to catch a Dragonite.
@ShadJV It might be a UK thing but yeah, Drowzees in most towns and cities are literally more common than Pidgey and Ratatta. They're a plague.
Wish I had that problem, haha. Most common thing here is weedles. Weedles everywhere. At least 4 weedles to every pidgey.
@TingelTangel Frankly, I'm not as concerned with new features (although trading would be nice) as them putting back things like tracking.
I've had more than one occasion where an Aerodactyl popped up on the Sightings, but with no clue where to go in a 200m radius, I spent about 20 frustrating minutes walking around to no avail.
Hope this will work for medals you've alerady earned, as some of us don't have that many medals left to get.
@Raylax
Lol yup!
Well here it's Pidgey, Ratata, Geodude, Growlithe, Ponyta and Abra
@Kingfisher
I love your Hummingbird
Here comes another "new feature" that barely changes anything and doesn't actually advance or improve the game in any notable way.
Im pretty much just catching Pigeys at this point to level up. Anything to make that easier is great.
Ok that's a boring update. I have a question: where the hell did the 10km eggs go? And what kind of fun is walking 3km or 5km for a single candy?? Like others, I'm starting to get sick of this treadmill.
@seb5049 I think it's because "players" use rooted or jailbroken phones to fake the GPS info and travel wherever they want instantly which is just about the lamest thing ever and predictably ruins it for people who want to just play the game (like the whole tracker debacle with scrapers.)
This is a great update, the gym update that goes with it I need to see more details on because I liked that training gyms give you a use of middle range CP pokemon and it looks like that may change when you can train with 6 Pokemon.
@Raylax It's not a UK thing. They're a plague in Toronto as well.
@aaronsullivan You don't need a rooted phone to do that. How about Niantic improves their cheat detection instead of blocking a percentage of their userbase, most of which haven't even thought of hacking the game?
@seb5049 I don't know. Once you root or jailbreak you are off the support list. You are on your own. Figure it out yourself or play another game.
Additionally, I don't think Niantic or the Pokemon Company or Game Freak or Nintendo will miss you.
Cheaters make more work for the developers and are useless customers that don't deserve their attention. Worse, they distract the developers from improvements other players would enjoy. If they can cut off a route to cheating that cuts off some non-cheating customers who root it's probably worth the trade off.
Why should they care exactly?
@aaronsullivan As I said, you don't need a rooted phone to cheat. Blocking root, let alone using SafetyNet, does absolutely nothing to stop cheaters. Why should they care? Because I am a user of their app who is now no longer using it. Every customer matters, and any business which acts otherwise is scummy.
@seb5049 Yes, all customers matter. Some are a hinderance to the enjoyment of others and they should be shut out of the experience if possible. While you can't stop all cheating, a failure to suppress it where possible or make it more difficult does actually lead to the destruction of the gameplay for everyone else in many types of games. In my opinion, this doesn't make the developer/publisher the least bit "scummy".
Sometimes there are edge cases where people are shut out as a result, but it's ultimately the fault of those who decide that playing nice doesn't matter because cheating for their own "gain" is more important than the enjoyment or investment of time and money by other players. They put a heavier burden on the developers, cause prices to rise, and quality to suffer all while chanting "give me more".
Because of cheaters it's possible that this type of game won't ever work long term if the GPS is easily spoofed. That would be a shame. At least on the iPhone it seems you need to have a developer account and go through hoops that are burdensome enough to deter most. And that can be enough. Just deterring most people from cheating does help.
I haven't looked into the Android situation, but maybe a game like this can't realistically work there and the platform should be abandoned in the future.
If it is completely trivial to spoof your gps location and just walk around, the revenue streams disappear: both those which revolve around players who want a quick boost in certain areas spending real money, and from businesses with nearby pokestops attracting additional patrons by buying their own lures . Not to mention the social and physical value of the game goes away.
If some people choose to use their devices in a way that conflicts with how the game can be successful I think it's okay to make them choose.
Players would prefer everything for free with no ads and for the game to play just the way they want it to. Businesses can't give them that either. Scum?
