If Pikmin 3 taught us anything, it's that the series - evidently a personal favourite of its creator Shigeru Miyamoto - will be given the time it needs in development. At various points the third entry in the series was rumoured for Wii and then 3DS, before emerging in HD splendour for Wii U.
It was with caution, then, that many greeted comments from Shigeru Miyamoto in 2015 that Pikmin 4 was "very close to completion". Since then not much has been heard about it, perhaps proving that those initial comments were a sign of slight over-enthusiasm from Shigeru Miyamoto. Quizzed about its progress by Game Rant, the Creative Fellow admitted it had been struggling for prominence in Nintendo's list of priorities, but was working its way back onto the agenda.
Yes, you are right, and we're working on [Pikmin 4]. So, you know, when we're in development we have to create a list of priorities and it has been hard to kind of fit that into that list, but we're hopefully starting to see that on the list now.
Most bets are on a Nintendo NX release, of course, especially as it'd be a handy title for the platform's first year on the market. Time will tell, ultimately, but we're certainly keen to see where the series goes next.

YEEEEESS! I can't wait for a new Pikmin game! I loved 3!
i wonder what else is on that list of priorities. meh, back to playing mh generations.
NX launch title then??
GOOD!!!
Pikmin's never a priority, is it?
Has to be a launch title for NX. That along with BoTw and I'd be a very happy 1st day buyer
Doubt it will be day 1. Most likely a game released 6 months to a year into the NX's lifespan.
I want it for the Wii U, pretty please?!
After buying the indoor Christmas DLC stuff, I'd love to see a few different settings. Imagine a Pikmin level in a city, or a suburb, or at a famous monument, or a space ship.
Yeah if Pikmin 4 was more of a priority it may very well be a launch title for NX... but it isn't so we're likely to see it in 2018 if we're lucky. ;-;
While I can see many people wanting this for the NX, I was always hoping we'd get a 3ds Pikmin. Would be a nice final game on that system too supposing the 3ds won't have many big titles left in the next year beyond the pokemons
The best takeaway I had from this is that despite the current drought of games right now (especially for the poor Wii U) it does seem that they are very busy right now prepping for a great NX launch. Please don't mess up the NX launch Nintendo!
I was under the impression it was finished!
@Sanicranfast And based on what exactly would you doubt that?
Mr. Miyamoto has previously stated that the title was near completion, a statement also mentioned in this article, and now he mentions that they are going to put it on the "to do" list again, with well over a half year to go, so I think it is not that far-fetched to expect to see it as an NX launch title at all.
@ThanosReXXX A game being in development means very little these days.
FFVersus13 was in development for 11 years before releasing as FF15 at the end of this year.
Last Guardian was announced in 2009 and won't be released until Christmas 2016.
Star Fox Zero was delayed multiple times.
Zelda U was delayed to launch beside the NX.
SMTxFE was announced years before we saw any TMS #FE footage.
I was hoping for a Wii U version. I just hope it's not similar to Pikmin 2 where it's mainly underground levels, they got really boring after a while and just felt like they were there to fill out the game.
Confirmed NX title.
I am a happy man as long as it comes out within the first six months of the NX's lifespan. Hopefully the multiplayer is online this time as well.
I guess this confirms Pikmin 4 isn't a launch window NX title. Like I've said so many times, I honestly think most of the NX's first year will be Wii U ports.
@Sanicranfast I know, and these are some valid examples, but they did each have their troubles. Far as we know, Pikmin 4 hasn't and Nintendo isn't exactly known for having issues with their games. Delays yes, like the latest Zelda game, but that wasn't near completion in 2015 so it is not a very big surprise as to why that got delayed, but Pikmin has been labeled "near completion" quite a while ago already, and by the man directly involved in the process of making the game.
So, unless something freaky or bad happens to the development wrap-up, which could easily be done in 6 months, this is very much going to be a launch title.
Remember them saying that there will be quite a few titles available right at the beginning to prevent droughts like we have now with Wii U?
What other titles would there be, besides Zelda NX? There aren't that many known yet, and we know that a new 3D Mario is definitely not coming at launch, since Miyamoto has already told us that as well, so that pretty much leaves the aforementioned Zelda, maybe a Wii U remake or two, and highly likely Pikmin 4 as well. And then some as of yet unannounced titles and 3rd party titles.
@Grumblevolcano I see no logical reason why they would do that. It would probably cost more money to optimize these titles for newer hardware than it would earn them in sales.
And for now, only two to four Wii U remakes have been confirmed, so these have probably already been optimized or are in the final stages of that process. I don't think they are going to fill an entire year with remakes.
That certainly isn't going to sway the public and would potentially alienate Wii U owners and could even have an adverse effect which could result in them not being interested in the NX if all it offers is higher quality version (if that) of the games that they already know or own on Wii U.
@Grumblevolcano Honestly that was Nintendo's big mistake on the Wii U. They could have easily filled in a few release gaps (especially this year!) with more Gamecube HD ports. We could have had:
-Mario Kart Double Dash HD
-Eternal Darkness HD (Should be easy since Silicon Knights no longer exist)
-Mario Galaxy 1+2 HD
-Pikmin Trilogy HD (3 comes with all DLC on disc)
-Metroid Prime Trilogy HD
-F-Zero GX HD
-Smash Bros Melee HD (have it come bundled with DLC codes to unlock Roy and Mewtwo in Smash Bros Wii U)
@Sanicranfast Actually Star Fox Zero was only delayed once it's just Nintendo had so many problems making the game but only managed to get delayed once.
I have never played any of the pikmens. But, I guess I'll see about all the pikmens.
Pikmin 3 was my first Pikmin game and I now absolutely love it. Can't wait to see Pikmin 4
@Grumblevolcano No! Not the hole ENTIRE year just Wii U ports.
I can easily see the NX getting:
-Smash Bros for NX (a port of the Wii U version with ice climbers added back into the roster since they were removed due to 3DS issues)
-Splatoon because of how popular it was on Wii U
-Breath of the Wild we know for a fact
-Bayonetta 1+2 I can see getting in on the NX
-Mario Kart 8, because it is the greatest Mario Kart game ever made.
@Sanicranfast Double Dash HD, Prime Trilogy HD and Melee HD would be very poor choices out of your examples. I'll suggest 3 better picks:
-Paper Mario Double Pack HD (contains Paper Mario and TTYD)
-Fire Emblem Radiance Collection HD (contains PoR and RD)
-Pokemon Orre Collection HD (contains Colosseum and XD: GoD)
@Sanicranfast Umm, Metroid Prime Trilogy HD doesn't make any sense. It's just Metroid Prime 1, 2, and 3 in to one single game!
Probably a summer 2017 nx game. Launching next to BotW would bury it.
@NintendoEan At the moment we can only play them with Wiimotes via the Wii U's Wii mode.
A true Metroid Trilogy HD would hopefully add back all the graphical elements they had to remove from the Wii release to allow motion controls to work.
Basically I just want to replay the trilogy with an actual controller and not the Wiimote, with the same atmosphere that the gamecube games had.
Good too hear NX launch game maybe.
It would be a great title for the NX, besides Zelda!
@ThanosReXXX
Miyamoto also said Pikmin 3 was progressing "extremely well", but that didn't stop it from releasing 10 months after Wii U launched, despite being a "launch window" title. And they never gave a reason, except "HD is hard".
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2010/07/pikmin_3_development_going_extremely_well
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/07/miyamoto_hd_development_took_more_time_than_originally_anticipated
You want a reason why Pikmin 4 will be delayed? Easy. Pikmin 4 was created from the ground up to use the Gamepad as they expected Wii U to last 5 years. Moving it to NX means removing 2nd screen support, which means making sure everything works fine only on the TV. That could mean a lot of recoding. I expect it by Christmas if NX Home actually launches in March, which naturally I doubt.
Though as I've said before, I think Ninteod will have a 2nd set of NX games, games that work better using a combined NX Home and NX Away, Home launching in March, Away near the holidays after 3DS runs out of games. Pikmin 4 may be a good game to show that off. (Like how they should have made the Gamepad an accessory for Wii HD when Starfox and SMM released, worked wonders for $90 Balance Board - 35mil sold.) I also think BotW gets it's interactive map back, like Pikmin 3 got an updated map, and Nintendo will say how the map was only possible using the combined power of the 2 separate units. Gotta give people a reason to buy both consoles when they play the same games. Play the same games better. Though I doubt they'll call it "smartglass", even if that's what it is, their great secret.
@Grumblevolcano Well Pikmin 4 could very well be a launch "window" title. Pikmin 3 was a launch window title and it came out in August, about 10 months after Wii U launched. So a mid-March NX gives us a mid-Nov "launch window" Pikmin 4.
Have we abandoned new MK8 DLC yet or are we holding out hope for a new ND? I think NX needs Spaceworld, not an ND.
@WebHead BotW doesn't have any type of release date yet other than "2017". And since it's 2 prior release dates were "2015" and "2016" I wouldn't give "2017" much credence. It took them 2 years just to give us a title while they took away the interactive Gamepad map. Maybe in early 2017 they'll show us some villages and villagers, late 2017 they'll show us some bosses, 2018 the game will release. So don't worry about when Pikmin 4 will release in relation to BotW.
@Captain_Gonru Guess I'm back. Did you read my long post before I deleted it?
@rjejr it's obviously going to be a launch title. Come on dude.
@rjejr Maybe, to me Pikmin 4 feels like a 2018 release though if NX stays on track for March 2017 launch. Maybe Pikmin Trilogy (1, 2, 3 and all DLC) for launch window if NX doesn't have backwards compatibility. As for MK8 DLC, nope I think as it wasn't announced at E3 it's not happening especially as Splatfests are ending this month. So what do I think the Wii U situation over the next year will be?
-Nothing really happening until October, VC being NoA playing catch up with NoE while NoE releases 2-3 games per month with at least 2 weeks per month of nothing.
-Color Splash releases on October 7th.
-Wii U selects wave 2 for November, announced in October and releases on Black Friday. The VC situation continues as before.
-Nothing really happening until March, VC stops completely after December 30th.
-BotW releases in late March along with NX (assuming NX still releases in March).
-Wii U gets nothing afterwards outside of the odd indie title.
Anyway, nice to see you back.
I really hope the NX can make Pikmin look like the headline picture of the article, in game.
@Grumblevolcano Thanks, can't say it feels nice to be back.
If PM:CS actually releases Oct 7 that will be nice for a change, since I consider it a real title. I know I seem to be in the minority on that, and maybe I'll hate it like I did the Gamepad controls in Kirby Rainbow Curse, but I'm still looking forward to it.
Wii U VC really being talked up on here. I do expect SSB Deluxe to get released, w/ or w/o the $117 worth of DLC, but that's about it.
Maybe they'll release it for $40 and sell all the DLC separately. Not sure about any of the others, MK8 or Spaltoon or anything. If people really wanted a lot of Wii U games then more than 12.5 mil would have purchased a Wii U. (I thought it was 13.5m @JaxonH Oops wrong article.)
Shame about no more Spaltfests, especially w/ the new amiibo coming out, seems like bad timing, but I haven't played in about a year. 160 hours says I got my money's worth though and looking forward to Spla2oon. Can I at least have my Cloud and Bayonetta amiibo? If they are NX exclusives I am not going to be happy. Oh wait, I don't play SSB, I just want the toys, so NVMD.
@WebHead "obviously going to be a launch title"
The only thing obvious about Ntineod is everything they release - that's worth a buck - gets delayed. They are always off by at least a season for all of their major games. AC:aF and Mario Tennis Ultra Smash were not their usual caliber of games. Even MP:FF has been delayed.
Though as I said earlier, if your "launch window" is 10 months long, as Pikmin 3 released 10 months after Wi U launched, then sure, Pikmin 4 is a launch title. By the time NX releases Reggie will say the entire first year is the "launch window" anyway. He said "4 months" was the launch window for Wii U, what's another 8 months added on to that?
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2012/06/reggie_wii_u_launch_window_is_four_months_long
Yeah, and it will be released on NX at or near launch, I expect.
@rjejr Hey grumpy, back from the ol' holidays, huh? Hope you had a nice time.
Okay, back on topic: "I expect it by Christmas if NX Home actually launches in March, which naturally I doubt."
And why would you doubt that? Last financial/share holder meeting once again reaffirmed that exact date, so I FULLY expect an NX related system to launch in March. If it is indeed revealed in September, as has been hinted at numerous times now, then releasing it so much later won't make much business sense being in the position that they're in.
And what's that about a Pikmin 4 launch window? If it's a launch title, it will come out around the same time an NX system is released, which is still slated for March 2017, and there is no reason to believe otherwise, and I can't see a launch window being 8 months, so it is going to release at launch or not.
It's either one or the other, and my money is on launch title. The articles you quoted are older than the one wherein Miyamoto states that it is very close to completion, so it seems to me that we should probably go by that info instead of looking at even older news.
And taking into consideration that the "very close to completion" article is also almost a year old, means that they have either completely shelved it for a year after having done most of the work already or they have done some more stuff on it every now and then, making the coming months of remaining development probably only about adding the final touches and such, so there really is no reason whatsoever why this couldn't be a launch title.
And if they want to make good on their "plenty of titles available for NX" statement, they better not come out of the gates with only one or two titles...
And I'm still going for the "two systems, one cartridge" idea. Two sets of games seems WAY to convoluted to me. And they don't have the manpower to support that either, as was shown by their constant jumping to and fro on Wii U and 3DS development, with neither platform getting any kind of continuous support.
There is a reason why they consolidated their business and their departments, and that is to make all things more streamlined and beneficial for the future, so in that sense, only having to make one game that will work on both home and handheld console would be a good thing to do.
And because you'd have two previously separate departments working on them, you could easily get more games as well, since all the handheld programmers can now also work on one game to work on both systems as well. In my honest opinion, that's win-win across the board...
@rjejr The Treehouse stream at E3 made me much more positive about Color Splash. It looks like it'll be great as its own game and well the October 7th release date is a confirmed one ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hZTUYjNMACw ).
I could see MK8/Smash being part of that Wii U Selects wave 2 in EU though maybe not NA so something like:
EU - MK8 (with DLC 1+2), Smash, Pikmin 3, SM3DW, W101, Hyrule Warriors, Captain Toad, Game & Wario
NA - WWHD, LCU, W101, Captain Toad, Game & Wario, NSMBU (with NSLU), Kirby and the Rainbow Curse, Wii Party U
As for Splatfests, it seems the purpose of the amiibo is to essentially create the Splatfest atmosphere without there needing to be a Splatfest. The last 3 Smash amiibo will probably release alongside an NX port of Smash but still work in the Wii U version.
That's all I needed to hear to confirm getting an NX.
We can finally all go home now.
@Captain_Gonru Yeah, I suppose there could be some exclusive games, or premium games that even use both systems in conjunction, also because some genres of games are better for the big screen because it'll do them more justice, but I do think that the majority of the games could very well be suitable for both home console and handheld.
@C-Olimar Because Miyamoto has other things on his agenda, like making sure Paper Mario: Color Splash has no more than one unique character.
@ThanosReXXX Had a really good time on vacation, thanks.
Looks to me like you've been drinking a little too much of the Miyamoto Kool-Aid while I was away though. I know you were already discussing the numerous Nintendo game delays w/ somebody else so I won't relist them, but really, come on, how can you believe anything Miyamoto says, or really anybody at Nintendo, regarding, well anything? "Please understand" is all they know. Excuses and blame, not apologies or mea culpas or heaven forbid ever being right about anything. No DLC for SSB, dual Gamepad support, QOL, Vitality sensor, Project Giant Robot in 1st half of 2015. Wasn't that Miyamoto's game?
This was tweeted by NOA (I think around Sept 2014) and 6 of the 9 2015 dates are wrong. TWO FREAKIN' THIRDS OF THE DATES ARE WRONG!! Why would you believe anything a company says when it's wrong 2/3 of the time? Pachter is right about more Ntineod stuff than Ntinedo is right about their own stuff.
And I'm sure if we went back and read our old comments we were both predicting NX during the holiday 2016 period - I know I was, I'm not ashamed to admit I was wrong - and I wouldn't be surprised if Ntineod was as well. So it's already probably been delayed once. And I never said I thought they would delay it on purpose, but things happen. PS3 was delayed,
https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2006/mar/16/sonyplaystation.microsoftxbox
and PS4 launched in Japan in Feb. Not sure if that Feb launch was a delay or not, but staggered launch = delayed launch for people who get it late. They won't launch in March w/o sufficient stock, games and online infrastructure, they can't blow the launch.
"There is a reason why they consolidated their business and their departments, "
Funny realization I had this morning - all this time Ntinedo has been combining home and portable departments into 1, so we get 1 set of games, they made a deal w/ DeNA to make mobile games, and they are hiring internally for mobile games, so they are once again splitting their base, this time between Home/Away and mobile. I just think that's so funny but nobody seems to be talking about it. (Came about after my since deleted long tablet comment to you last night @Captain_Gonru )
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2016/07/nintendo_staffing_up_internal_smart_device_development_team
"so it seems to me that we should probably go by that info instead of looking at even older news."
Those who forget the past are condemned to repeat it. Though I prefer - fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on me. And if you can find an official date for Zelda: Wild on either Wii U or NX I'd like to see it. Not that you mentioned Zelda, but it's the best example of "Nintendo lies" I have at the moment. 2015, 2016, 2017, yet still no date.
I may have missed a couple of points but I think this is too long already.
I picked up Pikmin 3 a few months ago and plan to start it soon. It's my first Pikmin game, so we'll see if my experience with it will be positive enough for me to look forward to 4.
Still, this is a great news tidbit for series fans.
@Grumblevolcano Yep, it's not a NX launch title and according to what he said about Mario, there's no Mario game at launch either. So NX launch software will be Breath of the Wild, Just Dance and whatever remains hidden. After 3DS and Wii U's disappointing launch software options, I don't trust that this time will be any different, and the competitors now are fiercer than ever (One-Scorpio, PS4-Neo and mobile devices). Unless they have faith in their mobile apps...
@Trinexx I think the best Pikmin formula is Pikmin 1. Pikmin 2 is the most challenging. I love Pikmin 3, it's the most beautiful and have the winged pikmin, but I would change it a bit and make it more challenging (more similar to Pikmin 1). Pikmin 1 is very re-playable as you try to complete the story faster each time. Pikmin 2 can be a bit frustrating and Pikmin 3 is too simple but has great features.
@Captain_Gonru "the term "launch window" could cover a year or more"
That thought never even crossed my mind, but it makes sense. NX isn't a thing, it's a whole new world, Ninnteod probably did the right thing keeping it out of E3, it's a complicated ecosystem that is going to require everyone's undivided attention. Even if they know what they are doing and trying to accomplish it may still be a difficult beast to explain. Hopefully they fired they guy/gal who thought "asymmetrical gameplay" was a good catch phrase. And the TVii person as well. Clear focus, simple message. Won't be easy if any of us are even remotely correct.
@ThanosReXXX "but I do think that the majority of the games could very well be suitable for both home console and handheld."
You know, there are probably more companies making games for both platforms than Nintneod. Not the exact same game, but Lego City Undercover, Skyalnders, Hyrule Warriors, Monster Hunter, Sonic F&I, several indies. Same on Vita and PS3/PS4. So while the experience may not be the same on Home and Away, I don't see developers having a problem supporting both w/ a nearly identical game experience. XC proved to me it can be done.
Of course the big 3rd parties could be a real problem, Destiny, FIFA, Madden, COD, Titanfall 2, but honestly I never expected them back anyway. Squenix has been very supportive on 3DS so I do hope that continues on NX. And Level 5. And Capcom w/ MH of course. 3rd party support is there on 3DS, just need to move it over to Home.
As for games that require both - FF:CC was made for both Gamecube and Gameboy, same w/ AC. Fit required a $90 board. So there will be a few that require both, or work better w/ both. And some may only work on 1 or the other. 80% on either would be a victory.
"I rue having to pretend that a feature that was stripped out of the Wii U version is somehow Nintendo doing me a favor on the NX."
You have to stop taking all of my worst case scenarios seriously, it's making you cynical. Maybe they'll patch "smartglass" into both NX and Wii U versions at the same time for the GotY edition? I know Ntineod hasn't done those in the past, and Selects are often too little too late, but Kimishima will change them for the better. When you are in the Titanic at the bottom of the sea, the only way to swim is up.
@VanillaLake Yeah, I see the first party NX lineup as being just a bunch of Wii U ports (BotW is coming to Wii U so I'm counting it as a Wii U port) and a gimmick game that shows off the key console gimmick (like Wii Sports for Wii, Nintendo Land for Wii U). I also see some key holiday 2016 3rd party games skipping NX (e.g. Infinite Warfare, Modern Warfare Remastered, Battlefield 1, Watch Dogs 2, Bioshock Collection, Titanfall 2) do to the March 2017 release rather than holiday 2016.
That said, I think XB1 S will pose a larger problem for Nintendo than the Scorpio due to competitive pricing.
@Grumblevolcano How do they sell Wii U in EU? The MK8 bundle seems the only way to get 1 in the US, and that comes w/ the DLC, so I don't see why they would bother to make MK8 a Select, lowers the perceived value of the extremely overpriced @ $299 Wii U bundle. I do think you are correct about the 2nd wave of Selects, it will be the only real selling point for the Wii U this holiday, which I'm assuming will have to drop to $249 once NX gets unveiled in Sept, and be $199 Black Friday. If NX is not BC $199 w/ some Select games woudln't be horrible I suppose. No more Spaltfests though, might be a risk to pick that up, never know when the servers will shut down entirely. LCU will never happen as Ntineod continues to taunt me w/ that one.
I do think PM:CS will make it's Oct 7th date, but at the same time it will still be a pleasant surprise not to having something get delayed. Though I suppose Pokken and TMS#FE weren't delayed, but I wasn't personally interested in those. PM is really all I have left. And Lego D. We were waiting for a PS4 for that one, but then 4 player was announced, and DS4 are expensive, PS4 will be a 1 player system - FFXV, R&C, U4, Knack, infamous 2nd Son, TLG. Until kids buy their own controllers some day. Hopefully NX gets revealed before they spend all their money.
@Grumblevolcano. Sure it does have at least one Wii U port as Breath of the Wild is a Wii U game that is getting a NX port and Wii U delayed release. If NX is not backwards compatible it could get some more Wii U ports but I'm not sure about how would they perform commercially. If it's backwards compatible then we have the tablet controller / handheld link debate. It's interesting your opinion as usually, I also think One S is going to give Nintendo a hard time, as it is small, cheap, backwards compatible with One and 360 and it's also a 4K BD player. Heaven, if I didn't have an Xbox One I'd surely pick one up before a PS4/Neo. Also. Scorpio is still a bit far (holiday 2016) and could be expensive, as you pointed out.
@rjejr Well you can only really find random Wii U bundles so like the MK8 + DLC one, the Splatoon + MK8 (no DLC) one and the Super Mario Maker one but pretty much hard to find anywhere but the internet.so as if Nintendo gave up a year ago and these are just leftover bundles. As for MK8 and Smash not being selects in NA, well MKWii and Brawl weren't selects in NA so just following same logic.
I bought the Wii U day one mainly because I knew Pikmin 3 was coming out for it early (even if it took almost a year, haha), and I will for sure buy the NX if I find out Pikmin 4 will be out early. Please do it Nintendo!
@Grumblevolcano I forgot about the SMM bundle. And I forget Wii U doens't really exist in the UK. They should have kept Super Spalt as the bundle, maybe it could have sold a few more. There are probably 3 dozen things I'd like to see Ntineod fix w/ NX - whatever NX is - but bundling newer games rather than 2 year old ones would be nice to sell consoles. MK8 may be great and all, but I think SBB and it's $117 worth of DLC is a better seller. Just include the game, sell the DLC separately. And they could sell more GameCube adapters and controllers as well. 8 players need 8 controllers. Does Nintendo do logic? My kids HS robotics club is still doing SSBB Wii tournaments, never seen them do 1 for Wii U. A limited edition "Tournament bundle" for $399 w/ the Gmaecube adaptor and 4 controllers always seemed an easy sell to serious Smash fans. A litle late now w/ NX coming. I wonder if they will even bother w/ a Wii U Zleda bundle next year or if every Wii U ever made has already been packaged? How many more can they be making expecting to sell only 800,000 over 12 months?
OK, time to go see which of our 5 Android devices support Pokemon Go.
Pikmin is possibly the only game that will make me sad to see wii-like controls gone. It is suited for pointer controls.
@tsm7 I also thought the Wiimote pointer controls were a great addition to the series, but the stylus controls that were added to the game later are just as good or even better.
Great to see Nintendo pushing a series that never sells any copies
Only the original Gamecube game has sold over 1 million copies..
Guess being Miyamoto's pet project helps
@rjejr You might wanna edit comment nr. 49. That last quote and comment was for @Captain_Gonru, not for me. You actually had me puzzled there for a minute, so I looked it up...
As for the rest of your comments: no, I haven't been on any Miyamoto Kool-Aid, I'm still me, and acting as I always do: level-headed, logical and calm.
Oh, and I also already owned up to my mistake of thinking that the NX was going to be released in 2016, so water under the bridge, my friend...
And Nintendo's mistakes? Sure, they have given some wrong dates in the past, so do all of them, but hardly ever on hardware releases. And this one is VERY important for them. I wouldn't quite say "make or break" yet, but it could be the onset to such a situation, so they simply haven't got the luxury to screw up this time.
And other than either literally or figuratively falling upon their swords, I have come to known Asian people as more of the "actions speak louder than words" type, whereas a lot of Westerners shout a whole hell of a lot but never deliver at all.
Not saying they're perfect, far from it actually, but they will allow their actions to speak for them this time, or so I believe and for now I still have no reason to doubt that.
I couldn't care less about their past screw ups, these don't count anymore. It's a completely different situation, where necessity and importance drive their current actions concerning the new platforms, and besides their lousy Wii U send off (except for Zelda) I've only seen good steps taken in regard to the NX.
I think you are making WAY too much of some people internally being redistributed towards mobile development. That is not "once again splitting up a team".
I'm pretty sure this is simply to guide DeNA with the development of these smart platform games, since it concerns Nintendo IP's, and we all know how protective they are of them, so you can bet that there will be overseers, lead programmers and art directors from Nintendo involved.
But these will only be a handful or at the most a small percentage of the entire workforce and they will not result in a significant loss of people for "regular" game development.
As for the whole Nintendo lies thing concerning Zelda being your best example: that is actually a lousy example. It is VERY well documented what the troubles were and how they have overlooked certain things or more specifically: bit of way more than they could chew, and it bit them in the backside in return. I would hardly call that lying, since initially, even they themselves thought it was a realistic launch window, but in the end they sort of had to admit that they had grossly underestimated certain factors and so it came to be that we are now faced with a 2017 release date.
But I do think that the extra time has allowed for them to make the game even bigger than originally planned, so whether intentional or not, some good has also come from it.
On some other points in your various comments we agree, so no need to address these...
I bet they're going mental with the launch lineup for NX. Wii U had almost nothing good. NX gonna have Zelda, Metroid, Pikmin and....
I'm not a huge fan of the series, but Pikmin 4 would be a solid launch title to go alongside the NX. Not sure it would exactly sell consoles, but it would be nice.
@Dezzy @EXP It doesn't seem like Pikmin 4 will be ready for NX launch.
@VanillaLake Also Metroid ain't happening, Federation Force is Metroid's future.
@Grumblevolcano #63 Do you have proof of that?
@Grumblevolcano And Mario is 2-3 years away according to Miyamoto.
@-Red- He's just guessing. I'm sure he would prefer Metroid Prime 4 instead of Federation Force and, since last serious Metroid game was Metroid Prime 3, he's just worried. Me too.
@VanillaLake I get that but Grumble really shouldn't state it in such an absolute way.
@-Red- https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2015/06/next_metroid_prime_home_console_title_would_likely_now_be_on_nx
Those comments are evidence for a new Metroid not being in development at that time so at the earliest a new Metroid would happen in 2019 hence Metroid's future depends on Federation Force.
@Grumblevolcano Oh, okay. When I first read your comment, I read it literally. Now that you've clarified a bit, I get what you're saying.
Take the time it needs. Pikmin is perhaps my favorite series, every time these games are great. Pikmin 3 is at the top of my most favorite Wii u games.
@allav866 Didn't you see those few toads in a different outfit? Paper Mario is saved!
@Grumblevolcano @-Red- It's sad that Nintendo rushes games instead of developing AAA games that would meet better reception and sales. Examples:
Federation Force vs. Metroid Prime 4
Animal Crossing Amiibo Festival vs. Animal Crossing
@C-Olimar LOL The more I know about Colour Splash the more I want to replay The Thousand-year Door.
Wasnt pikmin 3 susposed to be a wii u launch title, than delayed to a wii u launch window, then delayed again to over a year after the wii us release?
@MegaBeedrill Yep and Zelda U was supposed to launch this year or earlier according to Nintendo and now it's delayed until 2017 because of the NX port so who knows... perhaps Pikmin 4 will be delayed because of the NX2 port.
@VanillaLake What would work best in Nintendo's favour towards the fans would be the approach seen by BotW (excluding the delay solely to release on Wii U and NX at the same time) and a number of Microsoft/Sony franchises. Develop bigger games and use remasters/remakes to make up for that longer wait period. WWHD and TPHD were of course made as a result of BotW's development being so long. Same is present regarding Uncharted (Nathan Drake Collection existed as a result of Uncharted 4's development being so long) and Uncharted 4 has been extremely well received.
Pikmin 4 would certainly go a ways to making me want to buy an NX. Right now I have so many games on Wii U, 3DS, PC that I can't justify a new system purchase without some real must-haves. Pikmin is one of those for me.
@Grumblevolcano That's a good idea. I think most people prefer remasters of great games and new AAA games instead of rushed and mediocre spin-offs. Only problem is that Microsoft and Sony bundle these games or release them for a cheaper price while Nintendo's remasters are always sold separately at a premium price as if they were all-new releases, which is kind of stingy and disappointing.
@VanillaLake Well it depends on the remaster. Stuff like Halo and Uncharted it makes sense to have a collection because you're dealing with sequels being a continuation of a large overall story. For Zelda, the messy timeline would make a remaster collection difficult so like you could have a Toon Link collection with Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass and Spirit Tracks though what platform should the collection be released for? The fact you have a mixture of GC and DS games complicates the situation because of power and playability.
Microsoft and Sony collections don't have this problem because the controllers for home consoles have been standard controllers and the PSP/Vita are pretty generic handhelds.
I am placing a small bet that neither this or Breath of the Wild will be ready for NX launch day.
If there is something obvious that needs done, Nintendo consistently avoids doing it. But we will have Skyward Sword HD
@dew12333
I'm confirming that Breath of The Wild will NOT be ready in time for NX launch, to incorporate a new achievement system, called 'Nintendos'.
Pikmin 4 is also going to be released as an Episodic title on rival consoles. It won't be on NX for at least a year afterwards, where it will be sold in limited numbers as a Game of the Year DLC pack bundle.
@HappyMaskedGuy Or perhaps there is a secret dungeon in Breath of the Wild that you can only access by having both versions of the game by paying TWICE for them of course, a la Nintendo.
@VanillaLake #81 I doubt Nintendo would do something like that with a game as important as BotW, tbh.
The amiibo stuff is already pushing the boundaries for people.
@VanillaLake Or maybe there's a secret dungeon in Breath of the Wild that requires all the Miiverse stamps and heart containers collected and Cave of Shadows fully completed in TPHD.
If it's going to be a launch title, I'll get an NX on launch day.
@VanillaLake You can unlock 'Tingle Time' by gently rubbing your Tingle Amiibo until he blushes.
This gives you the ability to avoid all mandatory jobs in Hyrule, and all Fairies will avoid eye contact with you for 35 years.
@-Red- #82 Hopefully. The only amiibo I got are the three small Yarn Yoshis (the green in the game bundle) and Wolf Link (game bundle). I think amiibo are, in general, a cheap way of locking content. But I'm also against overpriced DLC (like Smash Bros. and Hyrule Warriors). If it's like Mario Kart 8 then it's perfect.
@Grumblevolcano #83 Yeah who knows
@HappyMaskedGuy Yeah, anything is possible at this point.
I love me some Pikmin. Really good to know we have a new entry on the way.
This is the ONE game I think needs a Wiimote though. So if it is NX, they need to release a revised motion controller to use optionally for certain games. Just, please don't bring the Wiimote into 9th gen. It's time to put that old dated controller to rest. Design something new, sleek and modern
@VanillaLake: Thanks for the input. Simple is good for now since I like to play a simpler game along with a story-heavy/more complex game. I'll likely try out the other titles at some point if I like this one.
Roll on 2019.
@Trinexx Good. By simple I mean the gameplay and the progression, the story is simple in the three games. I believe the third entry is a very good place to start.
EDIT: Or the fourth, whatever you choose. Surprisingly, the quality has not been lowered in this Nintendo franchise (fingers crossed).
@MetaSmasher I'm in exactly the same camp. I've got a year long back log at least but a top notch pikmin game might sway me!
@ThanosReXXX ""once again splitting up a team"."
If I said splitting up the team, which I probably did, what I meant was splitting up the fanbase w/ 2 sets of games. I don't think mobile takes as much effort as console games, but there will still be that split. On NL now there are very happy 3DS owners counting down the days until MH and Pokemon, and then there are Wii U owners counting down the days until NX. And there are a whole lot of people ignoring Miitomo the best they can. Pokemon Go seems to be better received. Will be interesting to see how AC and Fire Emblem do. But there is still a split between NX and mobile, not in the development teams, but in the sets of games. They are creating 1 split while they undo the other. And I find the timing humorous.
I'm not buying that 3D on TV Reddit thread. Too weird. They already did away w/ 3D on 2DS, and 3D tv's have gone away to be replaced by 4k tvs. I don't see the point. Several high profile games didn't use the 3D effect, and anecdotal evidence suggests most people keep it turned off most of the time. I think the big secret is 1 cartridge, 2 consoles, and maybe a tablet that works w/ 1 or the other.
How do you see downloads working? Will either Home or Away have sufficient internal storage, or will Nitneod be going the "BYO" route again? Will 1 purchase allow us 2 downloads if we own both devices? I always stumble at this part. I'm hoping Home has at least 64GB on board, which should be cheaper now then 32GB was when Wii U released, Away 16GB on micro SD. Not much, but it's a start. I suppose if they are doing the same cartridge slot in both they could make both work w/ micro SD cards for downloads, that would be interesting. But I still think that simple idea is their big secret.
@rjejr 64GB wouldn't be enough, if you take into account the storage lost by default a Smash NX port and Breath of the Wild combined would completely fill up any remaining space. 500GB minimum feels more like what they should be aiming for.
@Grumblevolcano I know 64GB wouldn't be enough, but neither was 8GB in the Wii U. And Vita launched w/ zero if I remember correctly. And PS4 still doesn't work w/ an external HDD.
I can easily imagine them going back to cartridge based games, but I can't see them going back to an internal HDD. Wait, that's a duh on my part, Nintendo has never done internal HDD.
If you've been following Thanos and I and a few others, you'ld see we are all on board w/ the 2 systems 1 cartridge thing. If 1 game is going to work on 2 systems you would expect them to be similar, and since it's nearly impossible to expect them to put a HDD in a handheld, I don't think they'll put 1 in a home console.
Now if you want to say they use 128GB of storage, well I suppose that's OK, but that raises the cost, and w/ PS4 likely to be $299 this holiday - w/ Neo being $349 - and X1S being $299 - Ninteod can't make NX Home more than $299, so I think 64GB is all we get. And a slot for more, just like on the handheld.
And I don't think they'll split the install base again. I'm not sure how many sales they lost from people who said - "Well, $299 doesn't have enough storage or a game, but $349 is more than I want to spend, so I'll get neither." - but it was probably a few. 1 console, make it count. They'll already have a hard enough time explaining NX Home and NX Away to people, can't have a 64GB Home and a 128GB Home. People always ask for choice, but decision making paralyzes people.
So no, 64GB isn't enough, but I think that's what we'll get anyway. 128GB would be nice, but no more.
Being set aside and left in favor of other projects =/= being in development. If that were the case it took like 7 years to make Star Fox Zero, and we all know how ridiculous that sounds.
At this rate it will be released for the NX successor in 2023.
@rjejr With the splitting up comment, I meant to say that it is not the same as two entirely separate departments; they are now operating in tandem, and they may have put some people on mobile, like I said before, but there is no longer a decisive split between work forces.
And I know the 3D on a normal TV is only a rumor, but it was just the current rumor going on, along with the handheld patent also mentioned here on NLife. I do think the tech behind the 3D on any TV is interesting, though. And you can even try it for yourself since it's a program that can be downloaded to PC.
And yes, we agree on the 1 cartridge, 2 systems, obviously, since that was my idea all along. But I am still not convinced that this is the big thing that Nintendo wants to surprise us with. Don't get me wrong: I like it and I'm all for it, but it isn't new, has been seen before and it certainly isn't a whole new way to play, so I think that there is going to be something else that we haven't seen yet.
As for downloads: I think that the home console will simply have some internal flash storage or a hard drive. It should be a 500GB, like @Grumblevolcano said, but knowing Nintendo, I wouldn't be surprised at all if they went with what you said and put in 64GB's...
But other than that, you will probably also be able to connect an external HD again, so the home console will be fine. And the handheld can be fitted with an SD Card slot, like current handhelds. And if they provide one without limits, that would mean that the current 32GB cap (officially, although with some manual tinkering you can get larger cards to work as well) on 3DS can be surpassed and cards of any size could be used.
And currently, we are looking at cards of 512GB and cards of 1TB coming in the next few years, so I'd say that covers the handheld as well.
One last thing about the whole "what the heck is the damn secret of NX" thing:
Our friend SuperMetalDave made a really level-headed video about that which brought a point to my attention that I actually knew about back in the day when I myself had some experience with patents, but for some reason I had completely forgotten, probably due to all the rumors, excitement and mild frustration of not knowing what NX is. Anyway, have a look, it's a short video. And let me know how that landed with you. To me it makes perfect sense.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t0xfuYizQ6s
@Captain_Gonru I'm guessing that the reason that they delayed Pikmin 4 is exactly that. Meaning that they have simply completed the core game and assets on workstations, but have not yet ported it to dev kits. And since workstations are PC's and the new console will more than likely also use a similar tech as the other two consoles, porting from workstations to NX will be far easier than porting to Wii U, which would need a lot of optimization because of that being PowerPC based.
So in short, they just waited with porting the game until the NX hardware was defined, so they can start working on finalizing it. (for which they have the next 6 to 7 months, which should more than suffice for porting from workstations to dev kits and then optimizing it for final release)
Therefore I'm fully expecting it to be a launch title, or at the latest a first quarter title, so it will either arrive in March along with the console, or it will arrive somewhere between March and June.
"So, who is planning to get the deluxe edition, with both a Home and Away in the box?"
Depends on the cost and what you can do with it. It'll probably be cheaper to buy a bundle than to buy them separately, but first I have to see what it does and if it's interesting enough to step in right away. Or maybe I'll just wait until the first price drops: I have never bought any console or handheld day one anyway, so it would have to be REALLY interesting for me to start doing that now...
@Captain_Gonru If you are going to keep replying to both Thanos and I, yeah, expect a lot of words.
March 10th sounds good, but I'm going w/ March 12 b/c Nitneod likes Sundays. Though maybe the 26th b/c when Ntinedo says "March" they mean barely March. Like "first half" means late May or June, never Jan, Feb, March or April. And "summer" means Sept. or Oct. "Spring" usually means Sept. or Oct. too. They may not technically delay a lot of stuff, but I swear they have ZERO understanding of seasons and should never use them.
No bundle, too expensive, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to bundle 2 systems that play the same games. If they do that most people will simply say - "Why not make Away have TV out and be done w/ it, why make Home at all?" If they bundle it then they've learned nothing from Wii U and it's overly expensive Gamepad. Now I do think there could be a bundle in a couple of years after the prices drop, and PS5 and XX launch, and they have 2 or 3 really good games that require both, but to sell at the beginning they need cheap. Well a cheap Home, I think a $199 Away that plays Zelda and Pikmin 4 would be worth it. Home has to be $299 max, and then only w/ a 500GB HDD which I don't think it will have. $249 if it's SD cards only. $199 if it's an Xbox One w/o an optical drive. Really, no matter how powerful it is, if it doesn't have a blu ray drive or a HDD it should be $199. In which case Mahe wins b/c it will look like a Wii U w/o a Gamepad.
They so better call these things "Nintendo something" that looks nothing like Wii or Miitomo or New or whatever other stupid name they have laying around. Something normal and fun, no made up words. Time for caffeine.
@HappyMaskedGuy
Oh my god, the first concrete news have arrived. I was waiting for HMG direct but any reveal is good. Bit gutted on the Zelda delay but with Mario, Metroid, F Zero, Mother and Kid Icarus on release I won't worry too much.
ps. did I not get a happy meal with this reveal.
@dew12333 The McDonald's Press Event was sadly cancelled, turns out it's quite the popular place, so we wouldn't have gotten the Play Area like we wanted.
However, I was looking through some magazines and found a coupon for a Regular Size Fillet of Fish Meal (Valid until August 1 2016).
That coupon, my friend, is winging its way to YOU, AS WE SPEAK.
Congratulations!
@dew12333 Wait, have you seen the Ice Climbers- Frozen Redemption screenshots I leaked?
Think Touching the Void meets Pingu. IN SPACE.
@ThanosReXXX SMD made sense, but they announced NX in March, which means they would have had to be working on it earlier, meaning having the idea even earlier, which means applying for the patent earlier if it was such a big deal. Meaning we would already know what it was by now.
I do agree w/ him though that almost all patents we've seen lately are wrong. I think Kimishima is a businessman, not Houdini or the Wizard of Oz, just a guy who wants to make money for his company, and you do that by selling stuff that's easy to understand. Simplicity is key. Not vitality sensors or QoL or glasses free 3D. 1 cartridge, 2 consoles, That can sell. Using a handheld as a controller can sell, they did that already during the Gamecube-Gameboy generation. And Wii downloaded DS demos to the DS. I've never understood why those older generations worked together more closely than Wii U and 3DS.
So I think after the failure that was the Wii U, now is not the time for weirdness, get Miyamoto far far away from hardware development, and make some games on consoles. Sell cheap consoles, sell games. Many many consoles and games. No gimmicks, just games. 1 game, Home and Away. Then later games that require both. Worked w/ FF:CC, worked w/ Wii Fit as Balance Board was more expensive then 2DS is now. But no gimmicks. If it looks like a gimmick it will fail.
@rjejr Besides the fact that I agree with you for the most part, I still get stuck on the "new way to play games" and "never seen before" statements from Nintendo. All the things we discussed so far don't tick that box for me, not AT ALL. And neither does VR, motion sensors, controllers looking like giant magnets (one of the many weird patents) and what have you.
What's your take on that, then? And taking into account all the secrecy and wanting to keep things as close to their chest as possible, a normal or known thing just doesn't make any sense to me. But I'm curious to know what you make of it all.
In any case, we'll find out in a couple of months anyway. It'll be interesting to know how much any of us were right about or not.
I sure hope for their and for our sake's that it is going to be a big success...
@ThanosReXXX I guess I just feel like "new way to play" may have been a thing, like dual Gamepad support and TVii on Wii U, but Kimishima will dump the gimmick for sales.
Everybody always says things like "new", but who really means it? I just want to play 3DS games on my TV, that's new enough for me.
But if you are right, and there is a gimmick, I seriously have no idea what it is. The Dreamcast did it all already - built in modem for online play, web browser, VMU for on the go play, CD player for multimedia - and look where that go it. Nintendo just needs to go back to basics, make a console or 2 or 3 if you count a tablet, and make games. Sony royally screwed up w/ Vita memory and PS TV, Nintendo just needs to do it right.
Of course 2 or 3 or even 4 years ago I would have said by doing it right they should just make a 4DS w/ TV out, leave the home consoles and photorealistic graphics (still sore about the koi garden demo) and FPS to Sony and MS, so any home console they make is a surprise to me.
If they aren't going to make games that look like this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcapRBQoMWk
or this
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GcapRBQoMWk
why have a home console at all? Zelda may look great for a Ntinedo game, but it ain't all that. XCX was better.
@rjejr That's the same demo twice...
A shame that these never get released, though. Over the years a whole lot of cool tech demos have appeared on all systems and all of them are now gone forever, a shame really, if you think about it. (I still remember a really cool real-time rendered demo on GameCube with a walking tree called Rebirth)
Would have liked to try some of them out for myself, along with some never released betas also shown on various E3's...
Oh, well...
As for Kimishima's role in the current situation: he actually supported/confirmed the statements. You may remember him saying that this new idea even made him want to play. NLife also did an article on that.
But he's a shrewd business man and he has a rock solid resumé, so I'm pretty sure he's more than capable enough to have a good run as leader of Nintendo. And maybe he's just playing along to put us all on the wrong path, who knows, right... ?
It's not so much about me being right, though, but about why say it and why all the secrecy for fear that "the competition might steal our ideas" if it is nothing unique at all? Just doesn't make sense and I'm glad it is only a few more months, because it is really annoying me and it keeps running around in my head.
Not a good cure for sanity or logical thought, I assure you...
As for XCX being better than the new Zelda... I'm afraid that is a statement colored by opinion, my friend. From all reports from people having actually played the demo at E3 and the tech heads like Digital Foundry that have dissected it, it actually is both the most beautiful game on Wii U as well as the most technically accomplished one, so saying that it ain't all that is something that none of us on this side of the stick can say just yet.
Could be that the style, aesthetics or type of it doesn't speak to a person, but then that is simply a matter of taste. And in the end, if it is finally released and we get to see it with our own eyes and are able to play it, and we still don't like it, then it may perhaps not be to our taste, but it will still be the most ambitious game ever made by Nintendo, because that distinction is there, regardless of personal taste.
And even from what I've seen, recently with another 40 minute playthrough of the demo by Nintendo Insider, this game really is quite an achievement. Taking into account that YouTube video is compressed you can well imagine that the actual quality is quite a bit higher and that would also explain why the people that have actually seen it at E3 and played it, are so enthusiastic.
In case you still want to browse through it when you've got the time, here it is:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtT_W2xRE3g
And try and take note of all the tiny little details. I think a lot of people tend to miss these because of the anime style, probably making us think of a mix between the Wind Waker and Skyward Sword, but this really is something else altogether.
Besides that we don't know anything about the story and so on as of yet, so it is kind of impossible to make an honest comparison between an E3 demo and a completed game.
But besides the reported frame rate, LOD, and pop-in issues, there's WAY more effects going on in Breath of the Wild, previously "not seen before on Wii U" effects, better collision detection and even better detail on the lower resolution parts than in XCX.
Although it certainly is a great game and the outside areas are impressive (which was already the case on the Wii prequel), just take a look at the cities in XCX where cars are seemingly sculpted from one piece, and players (especially when seated in their skells) just walk right through them and other parts of the scenery, as well as through animals.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAArBCB446w
The streets and buildings themselves are also pretty low in detail, so besides a difference in aesthetics, Breath of the Wild's demo, if it is any indication of the full game that is going to be released next year, really is the more accomplished game.
And yes, I'm already kinda sold, but I still have a good pair of eyes and a decent sense of logic...
@Captain_Gonru Could be, but I do believe that this is the first time since ages since they've been so secretive and then it would all just be to put up a smoke screen? I expect Nintendo to be Nintendo, and not generic HD box nr. 3, so besides getting with the times, I still expect them to do something quirky and wonderful that'll bring a big smile to my face...
Besides all the great games of course, so the hardware has to be something special as well, and I still have some reasonably good hopes that it is going to be just that.
As for Zelda, nice to hear that you noticed too. The subtle painting with sunlight, the water, and all the little animation effects like Link hurting his toe when not wearing boots and kicking a chest and such, really add to the atmosphere.
If you haven't yet, I can heartily recommend watching or downloading that 40 minute session I linked to in my previous comment. To really get the most out of it, a PC monitor just doesn't suffice, so either watch it on a smart TV or download it to a usb stick and play it on the big screen that way. (and imagine a 15 - 20% increase in quality, since that is the average rate of quality loss when YouTube compresses videos)
Time flew while I was watching it. And it also showed that the overworld really isn't as barren as some seem to think it is from their first impressions.
@ThanosReXXX mother #$%$##@$#$ same link twice. Well whatever 1 you got twice, the other one was supposed to be another one.
There are about 12 Zelda vids on the Wii U eShop, probably 5 hours worth. (Well here in the US, not sure what you get over there.) I may watch them when I get the chance. But I still like the aesthetic of XCX better. No straight lines, no level ground, no solid colors, every pixel on the screen is something else entirely - grass, creature, dirt, smoke, rock, Skell - I'm a big fan of that, not a big fan of watercolors or pastels or whatever Zelda is. Zelda looks nice, like a beautiful painting, but I want to taste the bugs and the dirt. We'll see what Zelda looks like when it finally releases, things change, but I'm pretty sure I'll still like XCX better, even if cars have zero collision detection. And Witcher 3 Blood and Wine, and GoW, and Horizon Zero Dawn. And Uncharted 4. And FFXV. I like solid looking things, not paintings.
And the wait is killing me too. And not just b/c I'm so opposed to them making us wait, but b/c there really isn't much else to talk about. Paper Mario, and that's it. If Zelda U was releasing this Nov and Zelda NX next March then at least we'd have something else to talk about. Or Pikmin 4 on Wii U. Or Spla2oon. Or Luigi's Mansion 3. But there really isn't much else to talk about. I'm already over Pokemon Go after about 24 hours. Too bad Yooka-Laylee wasn't this holiday. So we wait, and twiddle our thumbs. Nintnedo must have missed the whole - idle hands are the devil's workshop - sermon.
@Captain_Gonru Well, if Zelda gives me a hot air balloon for travel, then we'll talk, but for right now the only thing I like the look of is the ducks on the pond.
If Nintnedo wanted me to like Zelda better than XCX then they shouldn't have shown me this first, this is what I'd expect a game to look like in order to impress me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27Lf4uVuE50
IDK, maybe they'll have an optional HDR filter for Zelda, I like things to pop. And I can't explain what HDR is or why I like it, but here are some pretty pictures, and Zelda is the "before" version to me.
http://www.blamethemonkey.com/hdr-tutorials/hdr-tutorial
@HappyMaskedGuy yeah thanks a bunch man, what with the only real reveal and a fillet of fish it's been a great time.
Well I guess I'll have to go back to reading the fake rumours on here till the next reveal. Oh well it could be worse I might be reading the comments section.
Ps. Cheers for making me smile
@dew12333 Ill keep you updated. Enjoy your fish. And you are very most welcome my friend Oh, did you read that a kid stumbled across a dead body following Pokemon Go?
That's publicity you can't buy.
Wow I have to be careful here. I didn't know wether to go with with this being a hgm reveal of a new Pokemon for sun and moon but I thought that was a bit harsh of the dead person. Then I thought about going with that maybe they were hoping Pokemon go might be able to help finding Isis.
Then I thought I better stop before I went any further.
@rjejr The video was the one with the bird and the fish. You could still have replaced the double with the actual demo that you wanted to show. Which one was that, by the way? The Zelda demo?
Oh, and FYI: the style that Zelda is using is anime (and just in case: it's pronounced "Annie May"). Otherwise known as "Japanese animation" for the uninitiated...
As for your likes/taste: well, in that case, Zelda is never going to win you over, since it's style will not change, also not on the NX version. It's just going to look and run a bit better, according to Eiji Aonuma's own words.
But in all honesty: the other games you mentioned are also quite a cut above XCX, especially Uncharted 4, which even I as a Sony hater can admit is looking gorgeous.
XCX has nothing like that in any of its textures. A lot of them are bland, flat and artificial looking. The characters themselves are also stylized, actually looking kind of anime-like, yet with a more "realistic" paint job instead of with opaque colors like in regular anime, which is what Breath of the Wild is using. And the water in Zelda does look much nicer and WAY more realistic than in XCX...
And just look in the sky in that very picture you posted, and how nicely the sun reflects on the surface. The lighting is very well done in this game. Smoke, dirt, fog and other effects are all there, too. And in a realistic style, just like the water.
On a side note, and that is my personal opinion, I think that these realistic paint jobs in XCX actually make the characters look more fake instead of less, which is probably what @Captain_Gonru was also thinking of with his "uncanny valley" comment.
I would have loved it if they would have went for a mix of real anime characters and realistic looking environments, but that's water under the bridge now.
As for those Zelda videos on the Wii U eShop: if they are the same ones which are in this list, https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL2JiZAV5BmDULhRvaW7CgwicEUIgKqQ4N then you should definitely give them a try on a big HD screen.
And I hope that there will be a demo of some kind or some possibility for you to try the game out. The aesthetics of a game are only part of the enjoyment after all, so maybe you should give it a shot anyway.
As for HDR: well, the photos in the example you linked to immediately made me think of travel brochures, making places looking nicer than they actually are, which is really not a good thing at all, if you ask me. I even liked the first two examples better in their original state. I'm a hobby photographer and a purist, so I also don't shop my pictures, in case you're wondering...
If put to good use and if used moderately, then every technique, including HDR, can be an advantage, but it isn't a necessity and it isn't always a benefit. Upping the hue, gamma and vibrancy wouldn't do much with an aesthetic like the one that Zelda is using, let alone dynamic blending. And it would more than likely ruin the color gradient for a lot of things, like the sky and the water.
And you want different pixel colors? Just look at the sky, the water, and the temple/shrine entrances. They're beautifully drawn, even in the Wii U version. And even though the rocks and some of the environments aren't that high in detail, there is more than enough diversity in them.
And if you don't feel like watching all the 5 hours of official videos, then why not watch the one I posted earlier?

You can probably watch that on your Wii U too, if you look up the title. Or if you have a smart TV, use the YouTube app.
Oh, and before I forget: your comment about wanting to taste bugs and dirt made me think of this guy...

(unfortunately only audio, couldn't find a live video or something of that specific part)
The part relevant to your comment is at around 3m18s into the video, although the entire 5m20s video is funny in my opinion, and it'll probably give you some very familiar grade school memories.
Hope it puts a smile on your face...
@rjejr Oh, and ehm...
"@Captain_Gonru Well, if Zelda gives me a hot air balloon for travel, then we'll talk"
How does paragliding and shield surfing sound?
@ThanosReXXX I do like anime, a lot, well at least since AKira basically changed my life forever in the late 80s. But I prefer anime for my videos, realistic for my games.
And paraagliding is cool, but how does 1 paraglide up? Am I expected to climb back up every mountain I've already been too? I suppose they'll put instant transmission in there somehow, but I'd rather have a hot air balloon type mechanism that lets me go where ever I want. They could make it so that you can only exit th eballoon at balloon spots. Maybe for the first half of th egame there's a fmaily of brothers selling balloon rides fomr one place to the next so you can only go where they take you, but after you've explored the entire map and found all of the brothers balloon rental locations they give you an honorary balloon pilots license so then you can take balloons where you want. Well not everywhere, you would still need to get in and out at the balloon rental spots so as not to mess w/ the story. Even at night. It killed me that we never got to fly at night in SS, even after becoming an knight or whatever near the end of the game. They kind of did that in WW by giving us the fast sale and the waterspout, and in XCX w/ the car skell and then the flying skell. Hot air balloon just seems perfect for a Zelda game. Maybe they could make the balloons metallic looking like they did w/ some of the surfaces in SMG on the Wii. SMG had some of the best shiny metal SD graphics I've ever seen.
A jump button is nice, and a para glide and board is nice, but I need to be able to get up. A hot air balloon seems better than a chair w/ rockets attached to it, though Wan Hu may disagree.
Oh, and yes, the other vid was supposed to be that Zelda tech demo. And I wouldn't wait for any type of demo if I were you, we still haven't gotten 1 for Star Fox Zero yet Miyamoto keeps saying we shoudl keep playing it to get better at it so we can then enjoy it. If they knew it was going to work like that they should have put the demo on Wii U eShop about 1 month before the game launched. Or last week when he made that comment.

@rjejr With hoping that there would be a demo I meant for you, not for me. For me, a demo would be preaching to the choir, since I'm already sold...
P.S.
After having watched it last night (had somewhat of a back log on videos too) I can definitely recommend the post-E3 extended analysis video that Digital Foundry made on Breath of the Wild.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiEYTN-nDso (especially since you may have missed that due to your holiday, even though it was also posted here with an accompanying article)
First off because they made a higher quality video, taken from a direct feed, and second because they show all the effects as they happen, so you don't have to search for them in all the other videos.
And just to gain some perspective on the whole, check out the E3 video that they made before that, which is clearly of lesser quality. They do address the issues of the Wii U version in it, so both videos together paint a good picture of the pros and cons.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mtfbm0HDhiU
And from having watched both videos again, the thing that really stands out to me is the lighting, both from sunlight and from other sources, such as fire. Just watch it travel across surfaces, it is really a nice touch which hasn't been implemented in a Nintendo title to this degree before.
And just out of curiosity: what's your fixation with hot air balloons? You want to be able to oversee the level? That can also be done during paragliding. If it's about a means for traveling and enjoying the view, then I can understand, but maybe we will come across some big birds, since some people have already spotted a certain island floating in the sky...
Oh, and if you're into anime, here's one I'd certainly recommend:
Origin: Spirits of the past, beautiful animation, great story, beautiful and engrossing musical score so a great movie altogether.
Here's a trailer:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4TOHyaQL1s
And here's another really beautiful one, 5 centimeters per second:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rIk3EpAAOk
I could go on and on, but I'll stop here...
I could make you an entire list of recommendations, seeing as I've got quite a few series and movies in my possession, but I'll leave that up to you, so just let me know what kind of anime you like (considering you like Akira I think I have some idea already, but just to be sure) and I'll give you some titles you might want to watch.
