Hyrule Warriors Legends producer Yosuke Hayashi has revealed that the game will only boast autostereoscopic 3D on New 3DS hardware.
In order to maintain performance with so many characters on-screen at once, Hayashi explains that the effect had to be disabled on the standard 3DS and 3DS XL. The additional processing power offered by the New 3DS allows the 3D to be enabled.
As well as this news, Hayashi also added that there are more characters coming to the game aside from Toon Link, Tetra and The King of Hyrule, and these will be announced at a later date. He also confirms that the team is currently looking at including amiibo support in the title.

that sucks. i like the 3d on my old 3ds xl and dont want to buy a system upgrade when a new generation is right around the corner. i will still buy, and likely enjoy, hyrule warriors legends but i will miss the 3d.
Any possibility of the WiiU Hyrule Warriors getting a "complete version" release when the 3DS version launches? I have not bought the WiiU HW because I was disappointed with all the "added on content" sold separately. I want to have the whole, full experience on my dics. For collection purposes.
It's a shame but I don't mind. I can't afford to upgrade and frankly, I'm just grateful to have an opportunity to play Hyrule Warriors so if I need to take a hit for it, I don't mind.
I'd say that's wrong, but it's okay. Expected something like this. Having many enemies on screen while 3D on would be an outstanding feat for any developer, even Nintendo. Guess the N3DS extra power is indeed needed.
The 3D is more enjoyed on the new 3DS....not surprised here.
announce a new handheld already, nintendo!
not a tiny upgrade like the "NEW" 3DS
@6ch6ris6
Next year they will.
I'm okay with this. I plan on picking up this version of the game since it'll wind up being more cost effective for me, and I wasn't likely going to use 3D for an action-oriented game like this anyways.
Even if I didn't have a New 3DS XL, I'd still pick it up.
More characters huh?
Maybe some ALBW, LTTP, NES, LA, and more Skyward love?
Any mention of C-stick use?
That's good. More uses for the New 3DS are very welcome. It's a much better version of the 3DS with the awesome 3D effect and the C stick, and it's good to have more games take advantage of its power.
Given I own a 2DS, this is hardly a deal breaker for me!
I have the power!
LOL can't use 3D anyway but nice to know my new shiny hyrule edition can handle it! Now I just need more stability!!!!
And I guess this answers my question from the other day. Sucks for those that have the old model but it seems I'm good to go. This doesn't surprise me one bit either.
I upgraded Day 1 because of MH4U special edition. At least this gives me another unique feature. Everyone can still play the game at least.
Nothing too damaging.
Don't see why this is such a big deal. I don't use 3D anymore, so this is fine. I'm curious as to who else will be added though. I expect more Toon characters like Vaati, Toon Zelda and Toon Ganondorf, but who else is a possibility from the non-Toon games?
If they choose to throw in the more classic side of Zelda games as well, we could get characters from Seasons, Ages, A Link Between Worlds, etc.. Characters like Yuga, Onox, Veran, maybe even Nayru and Din would be nice to see.
@gamekill
Since the advent of the internet, having all content created for a game over a length of time on one disc is a thing of the past, save for a few AAA titles that release GotY editions. With the internet came patching and post release content, and that's just the world we live in now.
But I think if you ask most people here, they'll tell you the season pass is 100% worth it- jam packed with all kinds of content and for only $20.
Cool with me. At 1st I thought it was no 3D period. Which would be a deal breaker for me, but alas, this is not the case. So, I'm good to go.
this is fine
Will it support the circle pad pro on the regular 3ds?? I'm not affected by the lack of 3d at all.
Was not too sure if I was going to pick this up, but this just solidifies a no purchase for me. There aren't a lot of 3DS games in hyped for, sadly. Hopefully there will be some nice surprises for 2016.
This is actually something positive in my mind. I was worried that the game might have fewer enemies because of the processing power on the 3ds. Instead I find out that they're going to cut the 3d technology on the older systems that cannot handle more enemies. That's exactly what I was expecting to have done, exactly what I am pleased with.
I expected there to be some difference between the two. I'll buy the Japanese version on the N3DS for the 3D and such, and be fine without it for the NA release on my main system.
@gamekill
I am not certain if this fits your criteria, however I do recall an update notice during play on Hyrule Warrior (Wii U copy) saying that all content on the 3ds version will be transferable over to the Wii U version. It sounds like free DLC for the Wii U copy. Could possibly have problems but that's the only information I know of.
@LordGeovanni actually, the game will have less enemies on-screen compared to the WiiU version.
Doesn't bother me. I'll just by the DLC for the Wii U version when it is released.
@Morpheel
I don't believe I ever said different. Nor did I expect any 3DS to have that much processing power.
This is Great!
I'll get the Wii U versión. My original 3DS works fine and I am not interested on upgrading.
I planned to buy N3DS down the line, so I'm fine with it. Besides, for action game like this, it could be difficult to keep the 3d effect in old 3DS, so I usually play games like this with 3d off unless I'm on cutscene.
@JaxonH @LordGeovanni
Yes I know that nowadays it is tough to get all content in a single disc, because of constant updates and so on. And that is sad for collectors. I do own a lot of digital games, but there's some stuff that I still deem worthy of having as a physical collection. Games that are an epic experience, or a great adventure on its own (Super Mario 3D World, Evil Within, Zelda games etc etc). And for me, Hyrule Warriors is just between those two worlds (constantly-evolving games, and "classical adventures by themselves").
That's cool. Since I own the new model. I'm good to go. The only thing I want this game to have is cross save support. I can play on the console version and then transfer my save to play on the go. Then back again. Otherwise I don't know if I would want to buy the new version and have to play through two versions of the game.
I'm surprised the game even runs on the old 3ds model
Even more characters? The amount of content in this game is insane! They better put up all the new stuff as DLC for the Wii U version, there's zero chance I'll be playing through all that again...
I have a New 3DS so no problem!
@Aurumonado Yeah, same here.
I use 3D pretty all the time on my launch model 3DS - I love it. But as the NEW3DS has a quad core CPU, GPU and 2X the RAM and GPU memory compromises have to be made at some stage!
Really want to upgrade to a NEW3DS model but waiting for a good sale price/bundle.
@CB85 hopefully free DLC because if this game has more at a cheaper cost, many will be ticked.
If a third party said they are not using 3D because the 3DS is not powerful enough to handle it Nintendo fans will lynch then, but because it is Nintendo it is o.k
@ikki5 Too bad for them. The game's been out a long time now, owning it doesn't give anyone some sort of right to free new content which has cost time, money and effort to create.
If you buy a car and one or two years on a newer model with more features comes out, that doesn't mean you get all the new extra stuff for free for your old car.
If people feel somehow wronged, then that's their own fault, for feeling entitled by the skewed reality they've created in their heads.
@DualWielding Nintendo don't say it, this game's developer is a third party, so you're wrong.
I was wondering how this'd work on an "old" 3DS. Now I know how.
i have no problem with this as I plan on getting a NEW 3DS for my birthday. I just hope that the smaller one will still be available next month. Otherwise I might just have to wait. I don't really play with the 3D too much anyways. Right now I have a 2DS so I don't really miss it anyways.
@wiggleronacid I love your avatar.
Doesn't bother me personally as I never put the 3d on. Thought this might be the game to make me get a new 3ds, guess not.
This means the game will barely run with a tolerable framerate.
anyone who is wondering about getting the New 3ds, it is way worth is for me, the 3d is so much better and it feels more official. Super excited
Eh. That's okay. I'm in it for the gameplay anyways.
@Totaldude911 Thanks man! It's almost as cool as yours haha.
Good. I was afraid they'd have to really gimp the game to work on the old 3DS. Now they'll just gimp it a little. Looking forward to playing this in 3D.
Err, 3D is still a thing?
@DualWielding pretty much. That is the reality with fanboys.
@EngieBengie Um, yes? Why wouldn't it be?
This gives me hope that the next Pokemon for 3DS, be it Z or something else entirely will be able to offer stereoscopic 3D everywhere and not just in battles.
Furthermore, it reaffirms my hope that the Ice Climbers may still come to Smash as DLC even if they can only be played on New models of the 3DS if they are still too much for the original 3DS models to handle.
One of those "more characters to be revealed" better be Groose (esp. since the Groosenator is in the game). Let the Groose loose!
@JHDKoopman LOL
its not gonna be right around the corner expect a 2 maybe 3 year wait.
Oh well. No problem, as long as I get to see Link senpai.
Fine with me. I didn't think the game would run on the old 3DS, so it makes sense something got cut.
@ikki5 well they already stated that it won't have any challenge modes that the wiiu version has and won't be receiving them if that tells you anything
I am getting a new 3DS but I have this already on wiiU so wasn't affected either way, bummer for others though I am very found of the 3D.
@EngieBengie heck yes 3D is still a thing. I haven't turned off the 3D on any of the 3DS models I've had since the day they launched. In fact I'd be a bit disappointed if the next Nintendo handheld doesn't also have stereoscopic 3D. While I'll agree that 3D can be a trend especially in movies; it's not quite the same for video games since they're so immersive, heck, all the new VR sets coming out wouldn't be nearly as impressive if the displays weren't stereoscopic 3D.
Well at least now I know it'll be on the original 3DS. I wouldn't wanna play with the 3D on anyways. It gives me a headache within five minutes.
I really don't want to spend a bunch of money buying a New 3DS when there are so many other video games to buy. But lets be honest- the 3D on the 3DS was just to give it a gimmick (and a lame one, since almost no one actually uses it), since Nintendo seems to be revolted at the idea of creating something normal. That's why I love'em, though.
This game was too intense for the normal 3DS to begin with. The fact that KT was even able to get Hyrule Warriors onto the normal 3DS shocks me, in a good way.
With that being said, this entire issue would have been avoided if Nintendo had made the 3DS more powerful in the first place. They should not be sacrificing one of the platform's primary features just to get a game running properly on the device.The platform should be powerful enough to handle all games, with all features, even 5-6 years from the platform's release. Nintendo's next handheld needs to be designed with a bit of foresight and much more technical capacity. Core gamers would be more satisfied, casual gamers would be more interested simply due to the enhanced (presumably HD) visuals, and a situation like this would NEVER happen.
It's a shame for those without a New 3DS, though at least they're providing glorious 3D for those with a New 3DS. This won't affect me buying it since I've got a New 3DS XL.
That reminds me, is there any other New Nintendo 3DS exclusive game, apart from Xenoblade port?
@westman98 I could not agree more with you.
@Rockmin
Iwata has confirmed it many times.
Good thing I ordered a Triforce Heroes 3ds XL yeah😋
@EngieBengie Sure is. I ONLY play in 3D. And if this game wasn't in 3D, I'd opt out.
@rushiosan Um, no... If the 3D was supported on the old 3DS, it'd have a bad framerate; the whole point in not supporting it is so that it does play well.
Why couldn't they do something similar for smash 3ds? Perhaps the 3D effect could have been turned off while the Ice Climbers were being used!
So 2D or not 2D.... That is the question.
@GamePerson19 thanks to DLC I think they may still make the Ice Climbers a New 3DS exclusive (of course they'd be on the Wii U as well), in fact, if I'm being a betting man, I think we'll see just that by the time DLC has stopped rolling out for Smash 4. And I think they didn't start off with the Ice Climbers as a N3DS exclusive is because the N3DS wasn't finished being created until long into the development of Smash, probably long after they had been toying with the Ice Climbers in Smash 4 to begin with.
Remember some balking in a thread of the 3DS sub-reddit. Really, if this was necessary to assure steady gameplay on old 3DS, it's understandable, and preferable. Wonder how Xenoblade may have fared, if 3D output was taken out of the equation... But, here and there more games I'm woefully neglecting to play (or get).
I still use the same 3DS since 2011, but this isn't a big deal to me... My eyes are not completely in sync with each other so turning on 3D just gives me a big blur anyways.
@Ryu_Niiyama Dude there's so much stability!
That'll show'em, those evil old system owners!
Didn't realise there was lots of people who don't like the 3D. If Nintendo's next handheld doesn't have 3D I am not getting it. I always use the 3D cranked all the way up, never gets old.
I'm actually surprised this game runs at all on the 3DS. I'm sure a lot of people won't miss the effect, it's pretty bad for the eyes anyway.
That is nice. Good thing I have a new 3ds xl (Majora's mask) since I love my 3d. I'm still surprised that this is coming out on the older 3ds but at least this makes everyone happy.
I personally don't care about 3D,but isn't that part of the selling point of having a 3D handheld?
By announcing the NX as a hybrid of portable and home console, Nintendo is making people do a 'wait and see', delaying their purchase. Which I think is stupid, decreasing the sales. If not for NX announcement many months ago, I would've bought the News 3DS already.
This game will definitely benefit from 3d Visuals as does Samurai Warriors Chronicles!
And this is why I'm glad I upgraded to a New 3DS when I did. Even if they were to not release another exclusive game for the system (although I can predict that Nintendo will release at least another 1 or 2 exclusive games to boost sales), a lot of games for the 3DS looking forward like this, regardless of it's a big blockbuster IP or an indie title, will take advantage of the upgraded hardware in one way or another. And all 3DS games can definitely benefit from the improved 3D and loading times.
