Nintendo is slashing $30 off the recommended retail price of the Nintendo 2DS in North America.
The price drop to $99.99 comes into effect on August 30th. The system still comes bundled with Mario Kart 7.
Nintendo is hoping that the price drop will boost the sales of Little Battlers eXperience, which launches this week.
Here's what Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales & Marketing, had to say about the price drop:
At a suggested retail price of $99.99, Nintendo 2DS is an even more attractive introductory option for first-time gamers. The new lower-priced hardware combined with the strong lineup of new games launching this year and arguably the best library of games in this generation makes it a great time to be a Nintendo fan.
The 2DS is now the cheapest entry point to the 3DS market, but lacks the auto-stereoscopic 3D effect seen on other members of the 3DS family.

OoOOO. BestBuy has had it without Kart for $85 all year, and its on sale for 99 constantly. Still, if the MSRP is 99, the sale price could drop below 70. I've already bought 4, but in the future, hmmmmmmmm
I would like to see Nintendo release something akin to the NEW 2DS with the new parts of the new 3DS and what not.
I bought the clear blue one when it came out just for collecting purposes. I think it was $99 at the time as well.
Most stores already have it at that price. I feel it's still too expensive for how cheap looking it is.
@hYdeks To be honest, if I was picking between the N3DS XL and the 2DS at their respective prices, I'd go for the 2DS considering how comfy it is.
Seriously, if they managed to put a better D-pad on it and made the L/R buttons push in slightly deeper, I'd go for it in a heartbeat!
@hYdeks @TheWPCTraveler I like it so much more than the XL. The LR buttons are a more comfortable distance away, it fits in my pocket easier, and the battery life seems much longer, though I haven't really measured that as much. If the NX replaces the 2DS, i'll miss it...
i thought it was always $99...
Yamadilly!
@ikki5 Technically its $130, http://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=nintendo+2ds&_dyncharset=UTF-8&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=15&sp=&qp=&list=n&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys but most stores have it listed at 99 anyway.
2ds XL will it ever come?
@russellohh I think it may also be due to it having a game. Walmart here has always listed it at $99 but it comes with no game.
I was really hoping for a 2ds xl. I just can't play on the smaller screen.
I own 2 3ds xl's and 1 new 3ds xl and I never play with the 3d on. I just don't see the 3d effect and it gives me a headache.
Maybe if I could get a 2ds with MK7 for under $70 I might buy one, because it is the only Nintendo handheld I do not own.
Why would anyone care? Most places were selling them at this price and someone at this used game store even said it was MSRP.
@Smash_kirby That's actually a good idea. AND THEN IT'S ONLY IN JAPAN.
I've seen them for around €100 in Europe as well. Might pick one up, since I still don't own a 3DS...
Cool. Now hoping they release a New Nintendo 2DS, with the c-stick and amiibo reader for $119 or so.
Just pulled the trigger on a Crystal Red yesterday!
I think it's great that this fantastic little console is available for people at an easy price!
When will the Wii U price go down?
Dropping the price...to make way for the New Nintendo 3DS Lite (with faceplates)! Am I right or am I right? B) B) B)
@opeter
It'll probably go up with Iwata's passing. lol
this was a pretty nice option during this console's lifespan. cheaper, but offers the same core 3ds experience, the price going down further but the quality still there. like, I purchased a 2DS for 48 bucks used off of ebay. I'm sure by the time the NX is announced next year these things will be going for 20-25 bucks. a pretty attractive option if the NX isn't backwards compatible, and a good enough option now for people not trying to drop 200 on a N3DS.
Might pick one of these up for collecting purposes. I love my N3DS so this could be a nice change or something my son could use in a few years.
Like everyone else, I thought it was already $99 in store. About a year ago I started to think about buying a 3rd 3DS system for the family. We already owned 2 XL systems, a blue one that belonged to my oldest son and a Mario & Luigi Silver one that my youngest son and I shared. I was going to get a 2DS for my youngest son....but ultimately bought myself a "new" 3DS and gave him the silver XL. I think the thing that always steered me clear of the 2DS is the fact that it doesn't have the clam shell design that we like.
That (or lower) had been pretty much the unofficial price with retailers for a couple of years now. Why it took Nintendo so long to do a price drop beats me. Will be interesting to see if retailers drop the price of copies without MK7 even further to $50 or something.
It has a game included so the real price is $59.99, That's really cheap for a console.
If I didn't own a 3DSXL I would get this. The lack of 3D doesn't bother me since I never use the 3D anyways.
Wow what a great price,i would buy this if didn't have a 3DS.
I don't really have time for handhelds normally but as the Wii u games are slowly running out I'm a bit tempted......
They have a 3ds-xl Luigi edition for £75 in a local second hand store and if it's there when I get paid next week!?!!
Buy all your friends one! Actually there is one I might do that for...
I bought my wife and son 2DS's last year and they've survived much abuse . Funky, but very functional design. I personally dig them.
But of course, me being the "bleeding edge" dad, I use a New 3DSXL .
@BinaryFragger did yours come with Mario Kart 7?
They recently sold refurbished 2DS systems for a lot cheaper than this even on the nintendo store site. 2DS is a very cheap system with a bad build as far as I'm concerned, so I'd pay like $50 at most for one in good shape but picking one up $99 retail is not bad, I guess.
Puts a dent in the likelihood of a ND soon. Unless they didn't want this price drop overshadowing the Wii U price drop? 3 weeks until SMM, if they don't drop it by then might as well just keep it this price until NX and come out w/ a $99 model w/of the Game pad or Wiig backwards compatibility.
The version without MK7 was dropped to $99 some time ago. Now the one with the download code for the game's MSRP is $99.
Goes to show how much of a lame I am... I thought the 2DS was ALREADY $99😕
I still REALLY want them to release the standard size new 3ds in the U.S. I don't care about the faceplates, I just like the smaller, more compact size.
Nice!
I bought my son a 2DS for his birthday and he broke it with in 2 months. It doesn't hold up with out the clamshell. But it was $99 when I got it and it came with pokemon.
I bought a 2DS brand new for £39:00 from a super market online, so pleased I did because day or two later they were full price again. I bought a case too for £10.00. I was pretty pleased it came with a 3DS charger!
@Acarie If I may ask, how did he break it? Because I've dropped my 2DS a few times on a hard mat, and its survived the fall without any damage.
@Caryslan He dropped it on the tile, the top screen doesn't work anymore. Kind of worked out for me since I gave him my XL and bought myself a New XL
Kind of a poor price. The 2DS with Poke'mon Y was $99 at Target a LONG time ago plus GameStop is selling the 3DS XL for $99.99, and Nintendo sold the 2DS for $60.
It was 99 CAD at Best Buy Toronto when I was there. There clear blue version. Didn't get it though because I already own a red one and planning on getting a new XL soon.
I think they lower the price to make way for the new 3ds smaller version and slowly phrasing out the 2ds?
Amusingly, the Red/White 2DS shown never made it to the states.
Also, while I doubt it's coming, I am so down for a New 2DS if they make an all-black version. I would happily accept ANY alternative to the New XL.
Good if you can't afford anything better, otherwise avoid like the plague.
@opeter
Price cuts are only useful as an incentive for buyers who are on the fence, I don't think there's enough demand for Wii U's - Nintendo are better off maximising profit off every unit till it's time to roll out NX
@Captain_Gonru I'll by the 3DS game playing system w/o 3D right after I buy my Wii Mini w/o internet. And mono sound? Really? Couldn't find enough room for another speaker? I still say if it was worth anything it would have released in Japan, but Nitneod knew the Japanese wouldn't want it b/c its just a kids toy. And why no "new" version? Don't they think kids want built in NFC for their amiibo toys?
I think the US exports a carton of cigarettes to Japan for every 2DS we import.
could this mean that the NEW3DS will finally be arriving at NOA as their 99-199USD middle price option?
also, I love my 2DS and carry it around or play more than my 3DS or 3DSXL..wish they'd add stereo speakers though as it just isn't the same.(especially for games like Animal Crossing where the stereo effect is in full use with the sound surroundings)..Also if they'd ever release a NEW2DS with amiibo compatibility I wish they'd make the screen a bit bigger like they did with the NEW3DS.
@rjejr Personally, I prefer the form of the 2DS over the other models of the 3DS. Its the most comfortable handheld I have played since the PSP. It fits in my hands perfectly, and I think its a great little system.
As for no 3D, I don't care about that feature either way. I can't see the 3D anyway due to my eyes, and it hurts to play games in 3D. As for mono sound, the simple solution for me is to plug in a pair of headphones.
My point is this, I can understand if people don't like the 2DS because it lacks certain features compared to other models. For me personally, 99 bucks is a hard price to beat especially when it comes bundled with a game like Mario Kart 7 or Pokemon.
I wanted a no-frills replacement for my old launch 3DS, and I have never regretted getting a 2DS. In fact, I love it even more then I did my old 3DS.
I could get a New Nintendo 3DS XL, but I don't see a point. About the only feature I care about is the C-stick, and that's because I play lots of Smash Bros.
But otherwise, I love my 2DS.
@Captain_Gonru Woah Dave! Yeah, I got that code around here somewhere. Maybe I'll just put it on my wife's and nto deal w/ them. They didn't want that FPS either. We still haven't redeemed a Wii U code as I wait for the new Club Nintendo. Maybe it will launch w/ NX?
@Smash_kirby That would defeat the purpose. The point of the 2DS is to be a budget model that they can gut out parts and sell cheaply.
