Nintendo is launching its NFC Reader/Writer accessory for the non-New models of the 3DS family this Thursday in Japan, and as a result many NFC-compatible games are getting updated so that they support the amiibo-granting dongle.
Code Name: S.T.E.A.M., Fire Emblem If (or Fates, if you prefer), Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy + and One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X have all had updates issued this week.
The NFC Reader/Writer module launches in North America on September 25th, with a European release coming on October 2nd. The module allows older 3DS systems to take advantage of NFC tech used in amiibo and the forthcoming amiibo cards which release alongside Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer.

We get it a week before Europe? Guess that makes up for Wooly World then.
A waste of money, may as well save that money and buy a New 3DS.
How much is the reader?
True. In the mean time, you could just save up for a New 3DS, but then you need to update everything, transfer files. More hassle.
I honestly hope this is cheap. Like really cheap.
I dont know much about NFC tech, but is there any reason that the adapter is so big?
@nf_2 20 euro/dollar
@Ichiban To accommodate the amiibo.
@VeeFlamesNL Sorry I should have be clearer, I meant thickness. It seems quite chunky
@Lizuka Agreed. I still have my original 3DS, and I'm happy with it, plus the 3D works fine for me.
I'm on the fence about the reader, literally there is only one game that uses it that I'm interested in, and amiibo are so hard to get...
I pre-ordered one for $20 off Target, but pre-orders don't seem to be there anymore. Still, they took my money so I guess mine is still in the system.
Oh... I thought this meant old 3DS games would have gotten amiibo support...
@Ichiban I think it's too small and white myself, easily lost at the bottom of a drawer or book bag, I like the 3DS Skyland portal a lot better. Though to answer your question probably the the IR port and batteries, though now that you mention it the Wii Fit meter is 1/3 that thickness and does so much more - IR port, screen, altitude, steps, memory for a month. How the f is this thing $20? Wii Fit meter even came w/ an entire game. WTF twenty bucks? This should be free w/ an amiibo, I don't care which one, or a pack of AC cards. Something.
Skylander portal came w/ a 3DS game and figure for $40.
@rjejr thanks for such an in depth response. Though it seems I may have set you off in the process, so sorry about that! (As hilarious as it is!)
w00t! my copy of codename steam has been waiting for this!
I wonder if this will get scalped when it comes to NA like with the Wii U Gamecube controller adapter. Mainly for the limited amounts and brand name.
In any case a new 3DS works better since it's built right in the Handheld.
@Captain_Gonru - I'm assuming 2 AAs or AAAs judging by the size. And I didn't mean to put down Wii Fit U or it's meter, I actually like them. I consider them to be QOL and not games, but I like the look and feel of the Fit Meter - they even made it in different colors - and $20 for both game and meter is a good price. I never did buy myself 1 though, b/c after buying my wife a Meter for $20 we already had the game, so $20 for the Fit Meter no longer seemed worth it. If Target were to clearance it for $4.98 I'd buy a 2nd though, so I am a fan.
$20 for this, not so much. And a year late at that, should have released w/ SSB for 3DS and the amiibo. I understand the business decision to try and sell more "new 3DS and XL, but from a consumer perspective it's still a year too late and looking quite expensive just for a NFC reader to use $13 amiibo.
@Ichiban
@Captain_Gonru - "that's the line along which they were thinking"
OK, I'll agree w/ that w/o agreeing w it as well. But on the flipside - why release amiibo if they only work w/ 1 game? B/c they work on Wii U of course, asked and answered. But then why release an amiibo game on 3DS if there's no way to use them? They could have patched in support later - like they did for MK8 - after the portal releases. People who bought the game and amiibo should have had this earlier, not be "incentivized" to buy a "new" 3DS first and then have this come out later. That's sort of insulting.
Which I know we agree on, and they have an argument, but I think their argument is weak. I'm actually 1 of the few people who understands no new 3DS b/c US has 2DS. I don't agree w/ that decision either, but at least they seem to have a solid reason. Faceplates not on XL are an insult though.
Don't want any of the patched games, guess I'll have to keep waiting to use NFC on my 'New 3DS XL'.
@BLPs - Better late than never? That's a good philosophy to live by, but I've tried, and I cant, I view it more as an excuse than a valid reason, like "my dog ate my homework". They knew when amiibo and SS for 3DS was coming out, this should have been out then as well. It's a simple little circle w/ NFC and infrared, it's not a PS4.
@Captain_Gonru - My guess is they sell really well in Japan or they would stop doing them. And they probably sell a few in the EU. If new 3DS and the faceplates had released in the US @JaxonH would have purchased every one but the rest would have languished on store shelves.
So it was probably a smart business decision, but it still looks bad from a Nintneod fan standpoint. If 2DS in the US was their reason, why no new 2DS w/ NFC and faceplates? Kids would have bought some faceplates. So no new 3DS, no new 2DS, and a year later a $20 portal. Even appropriate business decisions aren't always appreciated by the consumer.
@rjejr
Actually I still bought the faceplates regardless. At least the Fire Emblem Fates and Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate ones anyways.
What, you thought a little water could separate me from my Fire Emblem and Monster Hunter merch? Haha, never
@JaxonH - I should have known. Well if US does get the new 3DS this holiday I'll certainly be thinking of you and applauding your foresight. Maybe those faceplates will fit on the NX some how.
Nope. For me, if anything, I'd be putting that $20 or whatever towards a N3DS, granted the smaller model ever gets released here in the US. I'll just have to use my OG 3DS "as is" until then...
@Lizuka That's my problem, I only would use it for Fates (when it releases), and I'd have to get a Fire Emblem Amiibo, which I would love but are incredibly scarce around here. Unless they add amiibo use for another game I plan on getting, I think I'll remain on the fence.
I wonder if this will actually be readily available, unlike every single Amiibo that people are interested in owning...
@Nintendian not everybody can afford that, so how is it a waste of money?
