The Game Awards

SpikeTV played host to the VGAs for a decade, and some of you might remember the awards ceremony fondly as a way to reward industry icons for their accomplishments. Others are more likely to focus on the often cringe-worthy creative decisions made over the years, and the commercial nature of the entire show as a whole. Whatever your opinion of the yearly VGAs, it's been announced that they've come to an end, at least as we know it.

Yes, out of the ashes of one awards ceremony, video game broadcaster Geoff Keighley has emerged like a phoenix, promptly unveiling another. He's taken on the role of producer for the imaginatively titled 'The Game Awards 2014', promising an equally glamorous affair and featuring some very big names indeed.

Advisory board members include Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Shawn Layden, representatives from EA, Rockstar, and Ubisoft, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer, and Nintendo of America's very own President, Reggie-Fils-Aime. Comparatively, Nintendo has often had a small part to play in proceedings when it comes to its own announcements, but it's encouraging to see that Reggie is on-board to represent from the get-go.

Available to livestream throughout the globe, it all kicks off on the evening of December 5th at the Axis theatre in Las Vegas. Returning to the live stage format, the show will feature world premières as well as awards for both developers and the gaming community. It just wouldn't be an awards show without musical performances though, so expect those as well.

Our long-suffering editor Thomas Whitehead has provided some "enthusiastic" commentary on the VGAs in the past, so we'll be sure to cover the event in some form when it airs next month. Until then, share your excitement or disdain below in our comments section!
