Often assets that go unused in games can still be found kicking around in the code somewhere, and it seems that Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is no exception.
Audio has been discovered of the announcer declaring a number of modes and features that are not present in the final version. Many of them were present in previous games in the series, but not in the portable iteration. The unused audio is as follows:
Boss Battle
Tourney (Tournament)
Yellow Team
Event Match
Grab the Coins
Special Smash
The Champion Is
8 Player Smash
Choose a Mii
It's certainly interesting to see that these modes must at one point have been at least considered for the final game, and an encouraging sign for the features that may possibly be present in the upcoming Wii U version.
You can see a video of the audio below for yourself, and be sure to let us know what you think of these snippets in the comments section below!

Sounds like 8 Player Smash could ruin many friendships at one time.
@NavySpheal True, but it would be fun to try
off topic: your avatar is amazing.
I think this is the first glimpse at some of the Wii U version's exclusive features. It's going to make the 3DS version look like a lame demo by comparison.
That should sound like "choose amy."
"...and stop calling me Amy."
8 Player smash?
Inb4 ike kills everybody at once with final smash
I was kinda sad when I realised there was no special smash, I thought it would be included as well as tournament smash. They have the ability to do things like Mushroom smash at the end of smash run. I hate to say it, but maybe the 3ds couldnt handle 4 large players, or 4 lightning fast players on the screen w/ items on without slowdown. I still have to say im addicted to this game, and enjoy every second of playing it, even without the modes.
We still know nothing yet.
8 player Smash would explain the Gamecube adapter port as I don't 'think Wii U can have 8 wireless connections. That would be 1 crazy room full or peoel though
I found an unused audio file of the announcer saying 'Rid Lee!'. I wonder what that means. Who's Lee and why would you want to rid him?
No thanks to 8 player smash, but yes thanks to the rest of it.
@AyeHaley @NavySpheal I suppose they'd have to.... Spheal with it.
Surprisingly as someone who wanted 8 player smash in brawl, it just seems way too chaotic to think about now.
Smash World was found in the data as well
@Stu13
You lying? You better not be messing.
Special Smash please. I miss that in 3DS version.
Ok, my take on this? Remember how the 3DS Smash can be used as a controller for WiiU Smash? Perhaps they'll have it so that the audio, maybe more, can be streamed to the 3DS. It would perhaps make sense for 8 Player Smash if multiple screens were being used, right?
@LUIGITORNADO @Stu13 actually, it's Ripley, referring to the star of Alien: Isolation, who will be DLC.
@Stu13
Ah, yes. It seems that Lee from The Walking Dead was originally intended for the game.
@Stomatopod17 inb4 Ike kills everyone with ANY OF HIS FREAKING ATTACKS!!! I love you Ike!! I'm your biggest fan! Eeeek!!
@PvtOttobot
Coffee or Tea?
@thesilverbrick That's what I'm saying.
Wii U will probably have 8 player smash... which is awesome!
I wonder if any of this references yet-to-be revealed Wii U exclusive modes or content, or future DLC...
Eight-player matches would be insane.
I also kind of wonder if the 3DS game we have isn't the full game, like modes and features will get unlocked once you link it up with the Wii U? Seems like a very strong possibility to me. The more the games rely on each other for the entirety of the game to be unlocked, the more people will end up buy both versions, boosting up profits.
Such a shame there is no event mode, best part of the old games
When I hear 8-player Smash, I hear a higher percent of lag happening when online.
Did anyone anywhere actually enjoy coin battles?
They found more files since those, including Smash World, Ticket Selection, Special Order and Crazy Order... My guess is that they might play when the 3DS is used as a Wii U version controller, which could also explain those extra Star Fox voice credits.
Edit: Btw guys someone has mentioned 8-player smash might actually only be the new rotation mode or something (I don't even remember how that worked), so keep that in mind.
@thesilverbrick
The more modes the better!
"Choose a Mii"? I'm hoping this means there will be a mode centered around Miis. [Probably not, it's probably for whenever you pick Mii Fighter] Also I hope this 8 Player Smash isn't a fancy name for Rotation Mode.
If it's unused audio in the 3DS version then it was of course meant for this
Perhaps it has something to do with connecting your 3ds to the Wii U? Sounds could possibly play through the 3ds.
That's the one mode I've never played; Grab the Coins.
@thesilverbrick
I thought the coin battles and hp smash were fun, they were a nice change of pace occasionally. Was disappointed they weren't in the 3ds version, and I will be very let down if they aren't on the wii u.
My guess is it's for the WiiU version.
Here's another outtake from that announcer.
"Shulk! Shulk? Really? Sheeee-YULK! Sha-HULK! Hmm, I don't know. I probably can't make that one sound cool."
What could it mean... ?
@SirQuincealot I know! I was disappointed about that too! Hopefully it will be in the wii u version.
@thesilverbrick I enjoyed grab the coins and bonus (decisions) mode.
"Choose a mii"? That's what Mario would say!
Really odd Special Smash isn't on the 3DS version because we have some in the final Smash mode fight such as Flower Head and 300% damage.
sigh
"Smash World" and a lot more unused narrator sounds were found as well!
UPDATE THE ARTICLE! >_>
oh yeah, theres also an unused crowd cheer sound effect for the ice climbers
Calling it! These are Wii U exclusive things.
@ChessboardMan That is actually a pretty good idea, I hope you are right and these will be used when you play the Wii U version, with the 3DS
8 Player Smash... I can dream of that battle royale one day...
The problem with 8-Player Smash is lag...there is even lag with 1-on-1 matches. Can you imagine the lag factor for 8 people?
OH MAN, I hope Special Smash is in the Wii U version. Gotta get my reaction training with speedy smash....
8 player smash would be pretty interesting, wouldn't be surprised if it was a planned 3DS mode but was cut due to immense lag. Would be cool if it was a mode in the Wii U version by recognizing both GC and Wiimote/Nunchuck/CCPro/Gamepad/Pro Controllers and/or playing online. Wouldn't get my hopes up though, it's not something I imagine a lot of people have asked for.
choose-a-me!
it was a bit sad to see things like event match not included in the 3DS game. Hope to see them in the wiiU version.
@TheItalianBaptist nuff said
Notice how it says: Unused. To anyone who got overhyped.
@MetalK9 Coffee... IS WHAT WWE CHAMPION JOOOOHHHN CEENAAAAA DRINKS EVERY MORNING BEFORE THE SUUUUUUPER SLAM!!!!!
this unused stuff will be added in some way when the new 3ds comes out.
choose a mii?
@ToastyYogurt reminds me of spending all that money on gamecubes and gbas and gba link cables
@PvtOttobot
Coffee? I thought you were a big fan of Ike. Tut tut.
I think it's for the Wii U version. Since you can use the 3ds version for a controller I'd imagine that having tournaments where everyone uses their personal 3ds instead of passing around controllers could be cool.
8 Player could have been more of a 3rd person mode. I don't see 8 fitting on the classic environment in smash.
Some of these may just reference the Wii u version, like 8 player smash.
