If you haven't fired up your 3DS in the last 24 hours, a surprise may await — it's an all-new system update! Those cheeky scamps at Nintendo have once again been working on the following changes to your beloved handheld.
- System stability improvements and other adjustments.
Further improvements to overall system stability and other minor adjustments have been made to enhance the user's experience.
Once downloaded this update takes seconds to install, and we sometimes wonder whether "system stability improvements and other adjustments" really means "closing loopholes that naughty hackers may stumble across". Either way, and a joking tone aside, it's good to see Nintendo keeping active in updating firmware, especially as the feature-set and performance of the 3DS has come a long way since its launch in March 2011.
The update doesn't have anything thrilling like Nintendo Network IDs and Miiverse for the 3DS, unfortunately, but that will hopefully still arrive in the coming weeks or months. We still await the next big Wii U update, of course, which promises new features and improved performance; it wouldn't surprise us if that contains some goodies worthy of a Nintendo Direct.
We shall see, but until then all 3DS owners can bask in the glow of stability improvements. Lovely, lovely stability.

Ugh, GOD do I hate pointless updates such as this one.
Dear Ninty:
I'm not supporting hackers but c'mon, either add some features or at least admit your "system stability" is just anti-piracy bee-ess for crying out loud!
Cute pic for the article, by the way. Paper Mario always helps to lighten the mood.
@AlexSora89 That's probably my favourite Mario pic, which is why I shamelessly use it as often as possible (mainly for minor system updates).
It took longer to set up the update than the actual update itself.
The following titles were updated CVer and NS CFA thats the saveback up blacklist.
this new title was added to the whitelist 0004001B00010802
and a new uniqueID to the blacklist.
no change to the DSI firmware so no flashcard blocking.
Lol the update took like 2 seconds for me...
It changes the icons in the eshop main screen, at the bottom.
@rodaco those were like that before the update.
I hope its a fix to the broken relay. I can't even connect to any of them and its been a long time since I could. Got maybe 3 street passes from about 40 of them.
My 3DS is always on, I dont believe in turning it off anymore xD.
Yeah it took like 2 secs to update
My 3DS seems lighter after the update (o_0 )
"My 3DS is always on, I dont believe in turning it off anymore xD."
I turn mine off but i'm all ways amazed by how little charge it uses in sleep mode particularly with wireless off when walking the dog, i use sleep mode in town though and get 1-3 street pass's
At least let me just make my 3DS current! I'm just dabbling around in the 4s. I always have to use software to update, due to my unreliable internet.
@Captain_Gonru i agree i hate the xbox update sometimes they are always so long and always at a time you just wanted to enjoy a game
anyway how do we know this isnt just the set up for bigger updates and all?
Miiverse coming soon!
My sister had hers yesterday and did mine today. I'm wondering when the Wii U has its second update the 3ds will aswell and it'll contain the network for the 3ds plus flipnote. All speculation but kinda makes sense to do it all at once.
I would actually prefer the Wii U update show up announced like this 3DS update apparently did. Wii U DLs of any kind seem slow as it is, if they pre-announce a big update w/ the date and time their servers will get slaughtered and we'll all get error messages and disconnects and be annoyed. If the news trickles out after the fact the server onslaught will be a lot less and there will be less hateful ranting.
If the update comes out later and is already pre-installed on the WW HD bundles and other new Wii Us sold that would help as well.
@rodaco The icons in the eShop changed earlier in the week, before the update
What are you all taking about? My eShop is going faster than before the update!
I think the update is partially for the web browser, because NintendoLife (along with this comment post) is actually running relatively hiccup-free this morning on my 3DS.
yesterday I was at mcdonalds in the morning... I saw update fast it...I was thinking...what's all about it? I guess new update.
I will get it right now. I hate when I want to go to the eShop and I can't because I need to update.
@ThomasBW84 Paper Mario. My #1 favorite Mario series
Anyways, I could understand the frustration with some people on the system update only improving stability, but hey: At least it's a seconds-short update than a long one.
I like the system updates. They almost always make the 3DS run faster in some way.
@DarkNinja9 my thoughts exactly. I think it's just the calm before the wonderful storm.
Yeah... Update.
I was trying to go to the eShop when I got the message, so I went and updated it. It said plug in my charger to make sure it didn't lose power, but it could've updated with both red lights flashing. >.>
Also, my 3DS actually seems slower after the update before this one. ._.
not worth mentioning but better than nothing ^^
you guys complaining are sad. Honestly, it's an update, everything has them and it's not like it took a lot of time away from you and took seconds to install so... why are people getting so bent up over an update?
Homebrew (not illegal, and not piracy) was just shown to be launchable on the 3DS, so this "system stability" update probably blocks what exploit they suspect is being used.
I don't think I've ever seen an update that was for "system stability" that actually improved stability.
Let me update mine now, I really hope this is the beginning of good things to come ...Miiverse
So the icons in the eShop. They don't seem to be in the North America eShop. I checked a couple days ago.
Yeah, I was out yesterday and got excited when I saw that... and nothing. Would've been cool if it was an update laying the groundwork for Miiverse 3DS... ::sigh::
I hope the next Wii U update sorts out the freezing issues I'm having. I Was playing a Wii game in Wii mode and it just frooze, and I had to pull the ac plug out to restart the system. Not good, and it's happened before!
Japanese Monster Hunter 4 was released at the same time as this update. So maybe this update also helps that game in certain way (or maybe just because they want to make sure that game not be easily cracked)
uh oh... I think this update messed the relay streetpass thingy!
I did the update a couple of days ago. I was trying to go into the eShop and of course it won't let you in without the latest update. It only took like two seconds to download.
I wonder if the update was related to the Streetpass Relay problem?
the update sure wont enhance my handsomeness, its natuarally as enhanced as it can get. were talkin a handsome overdrive. thats whats goin on up over here
I do love my system to be stable XD
The NES, SNES or the GameCube never needed "stability improvements".
@ThomasBW84: I went into the eShop this morning and noticed that the icons at the bottom have changed. Could that have been part of the update?
This took me only 2 seconds..
I simply CANNOT WAIT until the day we get proper Nintendo ID's...
It takes like 5 seconds to update.
Or you could just cut the crap and wait until you actually have something to update for.
I wish they would make an update that makes the 3DS XL screens brighter when plugged in like the original model does. -_- I feel like the screen is just dull.
I'm tired of the potential system bricking scare that comes from each update because Nintendo is terrified someone might be hacking their system to play some of the japanese games THEY WONT BRING OVER HERE.
Easy problem fix; bring the dang games here.
I think we're getting used to these nothing updates by now >.> Was whatever it was really that important?
So what you're telling me is that a 3ds update that takes about 3 months to create does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING? Wow. I expected more from Nintendo.
At least it will be more like a horse!🐴🐴🐎🐎
