Metroid fans had better brace themselves, as Nintendo has just announced that Metroid: Other M, their brand new collaboration with Team Ninja, is set to hit North American store shelves on June 27th.
Metroid™: Other M, the incredible new Metroid game developed for Wii through a collaboration by Nintendo and the world-renowned Team Ninja, launches June 27. The game looks at the classic franchise from a new perspective: While much of the game is reminiscent of 2-D side-scrollers, players can switch the perspective into 3-D at any time as they explore the twisting passages of a derelict space station and delve deep into a cinematic, never-before-told story of bounty hunter Samus Aran’s past. This new approach uses a new control scheme in which players use the Wii Remote™ controller held sideways to battle enemies and navigate the expansive, gorgeous environments in classic Metroid fashion, then aim at the screen with the Wii Remote pointer to blast foes in first-person and hunt the world for clues and hidden passages.
How about that for a serious one-two punch, with Super Mario Galaxy 2 arriving on May 23rd followed by Metroid: Other M on June 27th?
We'll have some brand new screenshots and video of the game in action later this afternoon, so stay tuned!
UPDATE: Looks like Nintendo has gone and set up a teaser site for Other M very similar to the one launched for Japan. It's virtually identical, but there's now a voice that we'd be willing to put money on is series star Samus Aran. This would mark the first time the heroine has spoken aloud other than grunts and ouches; is it possible that Samus will no longer be a silent protagonist? We'll find out soon enough!

YES! This is awesome news. I thought for sure it'd be a holiday release.
Woo! Sooner than I expected.
SALIVATES UNCONTROLLABLY
My salivating has only worsened with the new details added to the article... =P~
This is all great news, but where's the big announcement?
YES!!
Yes! need to see a new video, please.
I guarantee NoE will just state the release for both of these games tomorrow as "The second quarter of 2010".
F**K YES!!
CANT FRIKKENN WAIT!!
WOW!
@Nintendo-Naut: there was never a big announcement. Journalists and forum dudes starting to hype it a little too much. Nintendo never gives such announcements in their summits. They way for E3.
Man this is AWESOME also max & the magic marker on march 8th and cavestory on march 23rd
I am definitely getting this first day. Full price or not.
This is... too much... in one day... to process... with the announcements... Mario Galaxy 2... and Metroid... I can't contain--BLARF! [vomits from excitement]
thank u BIG N!
@10 "Nintendo never gives such announcements in their summits. They way for E3."
Spirit Tracks, Mario and Luigi 3, Wii storage solution, DSi/DSiWare, Sin and Punishment 2, Another Code R, Punchout!!, Endless Ocean 2, etc.
Why does it still show Team Ninja as the developer? It's being developed by Project M... Nintendo are still doing the planning and design... Team NInja are working on graphics as far as I've read.
Either way I can't wait for release!
I'm just hoping to find out what Retro will be working on next!
Wow, Mario Galaxy and M: OM. These are great, but right now my focuses are on Mega Man 10. I can't afford to get too excited just yet.
Will be picking this one up after Super Mario Galaxy 2.
Well, it's gonna be a VERY HOT summer this year!!
OMG!!! This is a must have! too bad i don't have the trilogy. I like to play through that first
That play control scheme is what excites me the most! This seriously sounds like it's going to be like the old Metroids. The play scheme reminds me a bit of Super Paper Mario, where you hold it sideways then point at the screen as needed. If they can can make it seamless, it's going to fit in nice!
Why does Nintendo release some games on Sundays? I hate that! I really wished they gave more time apart from the other two games coming out.
Can't wait!!
so its a side scroller and has a 3d feel where you just point at the screen?? no nunchuck or anything?? this means i can run around in a 3d environment as samus and do what i saw in the preview! dont like it....
@Kevin: Me too.
Super Mario Galaxy in late May?! Hopefully that means EU get it soon afterwards. That's a lot sooner a release date than I thought it'd be!
Metroid Prime Other M in late June?
CANNOT WAIT
F-R-E-A-K-I-N-G-Space-A-W-E-S-O-M-E!
Gotta love this... might be my birthday present... if I can't buy it myself first, lol.
This one is gonna kick ass.
These releases would be driving me broke, if I wasn't already.
Heck yeah!
Wow, not just Mario Galaxy 2 BUT also Metroid: Other M? Summer 2010 = Superb Nintendo Win
Samus speaks!?
New screenshots!
Also, let's hope Samus is done justice if she does speak...
Well she sort of speaks in Super Metroid, Zero and Fusion just through text... only really the Prime games where she's properly silent.
Can't wait for this game!!!
Samus speaks in Brawl, but this new voice sounds like a younger version of her...oh wait that is a younger version of her in that trailer
This one is looking pretty good too
So I see she is younger.... we get to see how she gets the suit and all that? Nice to hear her voice.
Too... much... awesome hrrrrr head explodes
well if its samus, doesnt sound too bad. if link or mario spoke then it would suck!
That one pic makes it look like she is part of a team instead of a lone warrior. Although she is still more badass then the other guys
SAMUS HAS SPOKEN BEFORE MANY TIMES. In Metroid Fusion she actually had a dialog with someone. In the beginning of Super Metroid she "spoke" too, so i think it's just a natural evolution of the character. This marks the first time she actually has a voice though.
Everyone knows Samus has "spoken" before, but this is the first time she's actually gotten a voice--as in audible speech...
This game just keeps looking better and better; the wait for this one will be killer...
That voicework is... not too good :/
I recall some (textual) dialog by Samus herself in Metroid: Fusion, but to get voicework, that's something else!
Fans... always complaining about everything. I thought that tiny bit of voicework was great!
Woo yeah
As awesome news as this is, nothing can beat my excitement for MM10 hehe.
@Donatello
Yo turtle, you are joking right?
I'm tweaking! I almost (almost!), threw up on the keyboard after reading this information. This has to be the greatest day of my life in gaming. So much news on my favorite, so many great games, so little time!
passes out
@43. Nah, I'm not a big fan. I like the Metroid series is all. I'd like it if they go down the route of a voiced protagonist, but I was really just quite under impressed with the voice sample on the teaser website. That's all I'm saying.
I muuuuuuuch prefer the Japanese Samus voice. But whatever, I guess.
If only I were a kid again... it wouldn't be a matter of IF I had the time, but WHEN I had the time... so many good Wii games this year.
I'm not too happy with the idea of Samus getting a voice. One of the cool things about a silent protagonist is that it leaves more to your imagination and because of that everybody's idea of who she is and her personality is unique.
I seriously thought Samus' voice spoke at the start of Super Metroid? Like audible speech? Correct me if I'm wrong!
Nice, can't wait!
@ Chunky Droid I don't remember any audible speech in super metroid.
I don't remember any in Super Metroid, but I do remember her speaking in the first trailer Nintendo released back at last year's E3 announcement of the game.
@Chunky Droid
Are you referring to, "The last Metroid is in captivity. The galaxy is at peace."? That was at the beginning of SM, but it wasn't Samus. It was just some random narration.
Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god, a sidescroller platformer with 3D gameplay metroid, this is officially my most waited game of 2010, i loved classic 2D metroid since the gameboy advance games.
Actually Samus speaks 1º time (With a voice) in SSBB.
Do taunts while in Zero Suit to hear her.
This is looking gorgeous; I'm more excited than I probably should be for a game... just hope the NES-style controls work with the limited number of buttons. Can't wait!
Super Metroid had voice work. Wasn't Samus. I thought it was a man speaking, actually. It's been awhile.
Hopefully the voice work in Other M is better than that of the teaser site because so far the SNES game has better voice acting. That is a sentence that should never have had reason for typing.
I'M READY! I'll be playin' it FP all the way.
VIDEO NAO!!! lol
So, just the Wii Remote huh?
I'm hoping TEAM NINJA would rejuvenate METROID the same way RETRO studios did. I'm waiting for reviews before I buy.
Metroid Prime 3 Was the most engaging experience on the Wii imo.
I'm sooo excited for this one.
If Samus is gonna speak, perhaps they should take inspiration from Clint Eastwood in the spaghetti westerns and make her a bounty hunter of few words.
EDIT: Although there was no spoken dialogue to speak of in the Metroid Prime games, who can forget Samus' haunting death scream, provided by Jennifer Hale. She's also known for her work as Naomi Hunter in the Metal Gear games, as well as many other parts.
Here's a vid that demonstrates her talents: http://tinyurl.com/3kcy2r
She's obviously a talented, experienced and versatile voice artist, so if Samus MUST speak, why not use her again? (For all I know, it COULD be her on the teaser site) Of course in the end, the quality of the work depends not only on the voice artist, but on the script, direction etc...
did we get a SD card menu for dsi?
iSonic, good luck with that. It's a Wii-remote apparently. Switching to 3D seems to imply standing still or perhaps with limited movement, so you won't get far if you go "FP all the way." I suppose it's possibly that you could move with the control pad, but that would be awkward and leave only one or two buttons in easy reach.
music incredible, voice could be better this game could be epic. beats the crap out of anything in the other consoles
Here I am again. Listening to that music again. Wow!
New Metroid makes me happy.
Seriously not expected.
I thought this game wouldn't come out until November. But excited nonetheless.
I'm not excited about the control scheme (after being very excited about the controls in S&P) but I suppose I see how it can work. I was more surprised though with all the CG work in the videos. Not just stuff that looked like opening or closing credits but mid battle, like it was a FF game or something. As much as I'm an admitted graphics whore I don't think Metroid should be chopped up like MGS. Though it's still 4 months away (as unexpected as the announcement was it's still 4 months away though I still wouldn't be surprised if it's delayed, more surprised if it isn't really) so maybe the new look and controls will grow on me as I learn more about it.
FYI - 2 videos on the US Nintendo Channel.
@Nintendo-Naut: Thanks for that, I thought it was Samus doing the narrating, letting you know what was going on. My bad! I knew there was some sort of voice in there though
switching 3D to 2D anytime
Wowee! Insta buy!
I'm not too sure about that control scheme. Sounds kind of awkward to me. But I'll probably still buy it. I'm sure it'll play better than it sounds on paper.
Wow with all these great games coming in summer i cant imagine what Nintendo has in store for the holiday!!!
Okay, this summer is gonna rock. I'm graduating this year and man, this summer will be awesome!!!!!!!
I truly can't keep my glee in one place!!!
It's going to be released right on my birthday!
OMG I cannot wait for this and SMG2!
I'll start to save money!!
@Adam
Aww, crap. I didn't realize that. I'm gonna try it anyway. xD
Wow. Other M is looking beyond sexy right now. This summer cannot come soon enough with all the goodies Nintendo has in store for us!
Woot!
Wait, didnt we hear her speak in the E3 trailer?
Someone mentioned 2 new videos on the NA Nintendo Channel, but when I looked I only saw SMG2 and S&P2. In fact, I searched for Metroid and Other M wasn't even listed. I couldn't even find the old E3 video! I'm dying for some more moving footage of this game...
@Kevin: The Wii was released on a Sunday. Maybe it's a new practice they(N) started. I know there have been some other games released on Sunday, too.
@nintendogamerftw: I hear ya on that one about being driven broke.
On 2 other notes:
1. It's already been cleared up, but recap - Samus never spoke audibly, aside from grunts, death cries, etc in the Primes. However, Samus has had written dialogue/narration in Super Metroid(although "The Galaxy is at peace..." audio bit was not by Samus"), Metroid Fusion, Metroid Zero Mission. I don't remember any in Prime/2/3. & I can't speak for Hunters, or Pinball, as I don't own those. No speech, or narration in Metroid either, strictly speaking. & I never finished Return of Samus to known about that.
Giving a character a voice does have pros, & cons to consider. I hope, & pray the teams working on it does an excellent job, w/e their decisions. Either way, this game is gonna be kickinest awesome, & a half!
2. All the intrigue, & curiosity about Samus ending up getting a sexed-up make-over in this... From the current screenshots, I don't think that's gonna happen, @ least outside the "borders" of a "T" rating.
