Nintendo has proudly revealed that the Wii has shifted six million units in three years, making it the fastest selling home console in the history of the UK video game industry.
Since its launch in December 2006, the popular system has entertained and enthralled countless stiff-upper-lipped Brits and made its way into living rooms up and down The Sceptered Isle.
Here's the predictably gushing press release:
NINTENDO’S Wii SELLS OVER SIX MILLION UNITS IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS TO BECOME FASTEST EVER SELLING HOME CONSOLE IN UK HISTORY
3rd December 2009 – Figures released today courtesy of the UK’s leading independent music, video and software performance and sales tracking company, Chart Track-GfK, show Nintendo’s home console, Wii, has now sold more than six million units in the UK alone since launch.
The landmark figure, achieved in less than three years on sale, makes Wii the fastest selling video game console in UK history and the quickest ever to reach six million units sold. Wii was originally launched in the UK on 8th December 2006 and officially passed six million UK sales week ending 28th November 2009.
Commenting on the six million sales figure, David Yarnton, General Manager, Nintendo UK added: ““With its inclusive, family friendly and fun nature, we’re very pleased Wii seems to have captured the imagination of over six million families across the UK and reached such a landmark sales figure in such a short space of time. We'll work even harder to ensure that the interest in Wii stretches over months and years, appealing to people of all ages and gaming experience.”

Cor blimey!
Go Britendo
That's more than 5000 Wii's a day. Woah!
6 million!? What is the population of the UK? Do every 2 out 3 people own a Wii?
65million I think -- not sure what the average household size is, but that's a sizeable number of households surely.
2 of those 6 million are down to me and I don't even get a thankyou.
How about adding in some DVD playback functionality via a firmware update or that dongle you promised Mr Nintendo!
That would really be appreciated by me and probably a lot of other people too.
I think the population size hit 70 Million recently. Still, I'm liking those figures
Congratulations nintendo!
That's awesome
But I like how he said '6 million families' when I'm sure at least a couple of thousand would belong to people having to buy a second console
@edhe:
^This is how you do it.
Great stuff, well done Nintendo!
GOOD JOB BRITENDO ^^
Excellent. I hope Nintendo puts all that money into some serious R&D for the next console. Or maybe a better Club Nintendo comparable to the one in Japan.
@rerun: It is comparable, it's just not similar.
Well done Nintendo! Forever shall you be better than Sony and Microsoft!
to put it into perspective, there are only 5 million people in Scotland.
6 million is a huge figure for a games console
Coolness. If you were to go there and ask a random guy if they have a Wii, chances are they will say yes.
