It’s been confirmed that Masahiro Sakurai, creator of the highly successful Smash Bros series and all-round good egg, has founded his own ‘spin-off’ studio in the shape of Project Sora.
The new studio – in which Nintendo has a 72 percent share – has been formed out of Sakurai’s other interest, Nintendo first-party developer Sora Ltd. It currently boasts 30 employees and is on the lookout for "talented individuals" to join the ranks.
The fledgling firm is currently beavering away on a new game, but fans of Smash Bros might be disappointed to learn that it doesn’t involve famous Nintendo characters smacking the crap out of each other. "It's not Smash Bros. I asked for,” comments Nintendo bigwig Satoru Iwata. Sakurai himself has commented: "I can promise an experience that's different from anything [you've played] up until now."
Count us excited! You can check out the Project Sora homepage here, but it’s in Japanese, obviously.

Interesting, wonder what they come up with... maybe it isn't going to be a bad Wii year afterall!
