The Zonai are integral to The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, but not just for story and lore. Their technology can also be a key part of your adventure, and we want to tell you all about the Zonai devices you can find around the world.
This ancient race was technologically advanced compared to the Hyrule of today, and following the Upheaval, you can find many of their devices across Hyrule. If you want to know more about the Zonai Tribe, check out our (rather spoiler-y) look at them.
Otherwise, here's our guide on how to use Zonai devices, a list of all Zonai devices, and where to find each type.

What is a Zonai device?
A Zonai device is a piece of machinery or technology created by the Zonai that you can use with Energy Cells.
Zonai devices can either be found lying around the world or inside little Zonai capsules that you can get from Device Dispensers.
How do I use a Zonai device?
First of all, you need to have energy in your Energy Cells. You get given an Energy Cell, containing three Energy Wells, during the tutorial on the Great Sky Island. But to use more devices for longer periods of time, you need to increase your battery. Find out how to do that in our Energy Cells guide.
Otherwise, all you need to do is put the device down and either hit it (with a weapon or arrow) or interact with it. The Wings in particular don't need
If it's a capsule you want to use, go into your inventory — either the quick menu with up (then sort with Y to get Zonai devices up front) or by pressing X to enter the main menu — select the device you want and press the Drop button to get it out of the capsule.
What's a Zonai device capsule?
Capsules are a one-time-use Zonai device. You can carry these in your inventory, but once you drop them/open the capsule, you won't be able to pocket that item again. You can get capsules from Device Dispensers or in treasure chests across Hyrule.
What's a Device Dispenser?
Device Dispensers look a little bit like gachapon machines, but they're a lot nicer. These will give you the capsules you need to use during your adventure.
Most of these are found in the Sky, although there are two on the surface and there's an additional one in the Depths. In the Sky, they're mostly found on islands that are also home to a Shrine — look out for islands that have one circle and four long platforms coming out of them, as these are the most common locations. They appear as a little seafoam green circle on the map.
How to get Zonai device capsules?
When you find a Device Dispenser, you need to drop in Zonai Charges. You can use both ordinary and Large Zonai Charges, both of which you can pick up from defeating Constructs, examining decayed Constructs in the Sky, or exchanging Zonaite at the Forges in the Depths.
You can drop in five Charges at a time, and the more charges you give, the more capsules you'll get back. You can't pick what capsules you get, but each Dispenser has a pool of devices it can give you. We'll list where you can get each device in the section below.
Here are how many capsules you can get depending on how many charges you drop into the machine:
Number of charges | Zonai Charge capsules | Large Zonai Charge capsules |
---|---|---|
1 | 1 capsule | 10 capsules |
2 | 3 capsules | 22 capsules |
3 | 5 capsules | 34 capsules |
4 | 8 capsules | 47 capsules |
5 | 12 capsule | 60 capsules |
How to buy Zonai devices
Initially, you can only get capsules from Device Dispensers or chests. However, once you've completely maxed out your battery, you'll be able to buy all Zonai devices — including the Big Battery — from the Constructs at the Crystal Refineries. This is the only way to get Big Batteries outside of finding them in chests.

Of course, the TOTK community is hugely creative with Zonai devices, and we're just listing a few basic uses for them. We've got a fantastic round-up of some of the most creative builds we've seen, so have a look at that for some inspiration.

I've passed about 8 of these and had no clue how to interact with it. I've largely bypassed most things Zonai as there's so much else to do... even 65 hours in.
Perhaps I'm alone, but I feel the battery / Zonai device aspect of the game hasn't been explained very clearly.
Zonai cannons act like bomb flowers when you fuse them to arrows. On a 5 shot Savage Lynel Bow it's like your own personal armageddon. Just don't do it close range.
@lyle_catcliffe just hold either Zonai charges or Large Zonai charges near the "pot" at the foot of the dispenser. Then when you back out it'll let you drop them in. Similarf to how you cook.
If you put in 5 Zonai charges you get a few. But if you drop in 5 large zonaite charges you'll get a bunch of them.
@Gumdrop ah brilliant - I’ll give that a go, thank you
@lyle_catcliffe they're rwally fun and useful once you get the hang of them
The best way to mine rock walls is fusing a zonai cannon on a stake, putting it on the floor facing the wall and hit it. You can also move this cannon around with ultrahand all the while it destroys the walls.
