Review Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U)
Into the net
Mario's spin-off titles have been integral to Nintendo systems for multiple generations, typically designed to bring families and friends together for light-hearted fun. The tennis spin-off has often found a fascinating middle-ground between depth and accessibility, though the home console entries have often been focused on simple...

It's the weekend once more, which means it's time to break out your favourite Nintendo console and catch up on some of that much-needed gaming time. This week, Team Nintendo Life are giving a new free-to-play title through its paces, joining up for a tennis tournament and playing some rather unexpected games...
Media Create serves up disappointing Wii U and 3DS results
It's Wednesday, so you know what that means - we're at the half way point of another gruelling week! Actually, it means Media Create Japanese chart results, though it could also mean the first thing; in truth, the results are rather grisly this time for Nintendo, but considering its strong...
News Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival and Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Fail to Chart in the UK
Other titles show improvement, however
Even if Animal Crossing: amiibo Festival looks a little underwhelming as a gaming package - yes, we're still reviewing it - the inclusion of two amiibo figures in the package should help, in theory, to make it more attractive. Unfortunately that's not proven to be the case in the UK, as the title has failed to...
Feature Memories of Court Battles in Mario Tennis
Nintendo Life writers and some readers pitch in
We're not going to sugar coat it - Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash isn't a golden entry in the spin-off series. We were disappointed by the lack of content in our preview and are currently testing out online play before publishing our review, but what we can say right now is that we w

Site News A Brief Update on Our Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash Review
Waiting for a second serve
The Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash review embargo has passed, but we're yet to post our own despite having had plenty of access to the game for quite some time. Simply put we've opted out of going for the initial 'Score Pending' approach this time around while we wait for launch weekend online play on live servers. We've used...

News Sprixie Joins the Ranks in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Bringing some magic to the court
The cast of Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash continues to grow, and Nintendo's latest reveal brings in a relatively recent creation from Super Mario 3D World. The green Sprixie from that title will make her début on the tennis courts, bringing her cutesy style to the upcoming Wii U release. The reveal trailer also shows...
Video Toadette Takes to the Court in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash as Yo-Kai Watch Focuses on Weirdness
Net play won't be a strength of Toad and Toadette
It can be interesting to see how Nintendo's marketing varies across different titles, with concepts - or lack of concept as the case may be - drawn up to play to a game's strengths. On that score Nintendo's clearly got very different ideas of how to tempt players to pick up Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash...
News Dry Bowser and Bowser Jr. will be in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Now we just have to wait for Pink Gold Peach...
It's hard to believe that in just a few short weeks, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash will be gracing the consoles of Wii U owners in the West. It'll certainly be interesting to see how this one performs both critically and commercially, as many see it as a consolation prize that's trying to fill the gap...

Preview Hitting the Courts in Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Called out
Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash is one of a couple of key Holiday releases on the Wii U, fitting snugly into being familiar, accessible and inviting for families, in particular. As it has Mario in the title and is a 'wacky' sports game there's certainly the prospect that it could win over a few households for some multiplayer fun over the...
First Impressions Holding Court with Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash
Racquet Riot
A surprise service sent over the net in Nintendo's Digital Event at this year's E3, Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash for Wii U marks the first home console appearance of this particular Mario Sport in over 10 years. If early impressions are anything to go by, it's one to watch for - the demo we played on the show floor was very simple,...

I am stoked on this!
SO HYPED!
This will be fun! Hope they keep motion controls.
This is smashing news!
Looks great. I'm excited for this. Can't wait to see what kinds of crazy courts they come up with here.
This game is fun, but THERE IS NO WAY TO PLAY WITH YOUR ONLINE FRIENDS. No lobbies or communities. I bought this game specifically for this reason and now Im stuck with a game I could have played on the gamecube.
I must say: After playing this game as a rental, the amount of hate it received is definitely deserving. No Tournament mode, no Mii characters, no Gimmick Courts, no fun minigames, no Item Battles (YET AGAIN!!), returning Chance Shots, etc. I'm a huge Mario fan here, but this...wow, THIS is not a good Mario game! I would say the same for Open, but at least with that game, it doesn't stray as much away from the Mario charm as this disappointment does!
Until Camelot gets their heads on straight, I don't think I want another Mario Tennis from now on.
It's not a very good.
This game sucks really bad. The first Nintendo game I own I gave one Star.
Disappointing for Mario Tennis, and the whole Mario franchise in general.
The game was ok, I was disappointed that Diddy wasn’t in it!
