A delight at every turn
Gotcha Racing is about as simple as racing games come, but it's far more addictive than most. The concept is derived from Japan's Gachapon capsule toys — small, highly collectible toys that usually go for about 100 yen apiece. It's this concept that drives the heart of the game. When you first start Gotcha Racing you'll be...
About The Game
Enjoy the fast-paced action of a top-down racing game, but with a twist!
All of the parts you use to make your car are dispensed by Capsule Machines! Therefore, when you start racing, you won't have the greatest car, but as you progress and gain access to better Capsule Machines, your car will become the envy of the racing world! The game uses both screens together when you race, so the tracks will appear huge on your Nintendo 3DS, and even more so on your Nintendo 3DS XL! And you're free to customize your car any way you like! Try to make the ultimate, unbeatable car! Compete on 12 different tracks, race in Grand Prix races, and compete in 6 different racing grades! The game includes 6 grades of Capsule Machines, and even more special Capsule Machines you can unlock! You can even combine parts to raise their stats! In addition, you can use StreetPass to race against other players and receive new parts!

I cannot wait for Gotcha Racing! I have been waiting for a good top down Racer.
This was released in Japan in July of last year. They've also got a demo available, so I gave it a shot. The original title is Gacha Racing, which I think comes from their name for the capsule machine. After you open a few capsules in the beginning, it asks if you're happy with the parts and says that if you're not, you can "retry the Gacha."
There's absolutely no 3D, which I always find disappointing. They could at least add a second layer of depth to the menus... I can understand if they thought it would be distracting during races, since you're always quickly glancing at the top screen to see what's coming. That wouldn't be nearly as distracting to me, though, as the fact that they don't compensate at all for the space in-between the screens! It gives the road a jagged look, and cars that could fit in the space between the screens are shown on both at once. I find it pretty disorienting, and the kind of rookie mistake I'd expect from a first time developer (but not Arc System Works).
