Sorry Adam, I forget too. Haven't played Zelda II in a while.

But I hate Lizalfos that throw fireballs. Just throwing that out there.

I just spend half an hour wandering around the overworld hoping to come across a secret area and find the last magic upgrade. No dice. Might be resorting to some guidage myself, soon, unless anyone has some hints. I always, always forget where the last one is. The game's obscurity can be over the top some times, and this is perhaps the worst case.

The 7th magic container? Or the 8th? Double-check the maze for the 7th.
Also, the hint "go east of the palace of the three rocks" is legitimate. I believe there is a life container over there.

@pix - if you've conquered the orange/red Iron Knuckles, the blue ones shouldn't be too much tougher. Block a couple attacks then go for a jump-slash. He'll shoot 7 swords in rapid succession - be patient and dodge these. Then his attack will slow back down and you can wait for another opportunity to get a jump-slash in.

Yep, found the life container earlier, but thanks a lot for the magic container tip. I checked the labyrinth earlier, but I'll have to double check now. No telling if I simply missed it or if I already got it and just don't remember. That's why I hate having to get all 8. I think I just have one left, but no telling which one. I can't remember which was the last I got. I always tell myself this is probably a game best played in one or two days so that it's fresh in your mind what you've already accomplished, but I never listen to me.

Remember that the 8th is a freebie. If you have 7 already, you get the 8th in Kasuto.

I went to Kasuto and was asked if I got the magic containers. Went to the wizard, and he said to return when I was ready. Did I just talk to the wrong person? I forget how this works. I know I have at least room for one more magic square, maybe two. It's hard to tell. I'm so unhelpful, I know.

There are 8 total magic containers (4 that you start with, 4 you pick up).
You should have 7 magic bars. The old lady that asks if you have 7 will give you the 8th.
The old man will give you the Spell spell if you have 8 magic containers.

Right, I knew that. I am just super forgetful. Anyway, turns out I had missed the one in the labyrinth.

Note to Pix: Make sure you got a magic container in the labyrinth. If you didn't, and you've gotten to the labyrinth already (not death mountain), go back before you forget. It's important later on.

I'm now on my way to the great palace, though I'll probably level up magic first, just to be safe. Already got health and strength maxed, with magic one level away. Last normal palace wasn't hard, but I do recall it being confusing first time I played it. Pretty much knew what to do this time, though, and the enemies aren't particularly hard.

That was the one I missed on my last time through, as well.

Well, Pix, you lose The Great Zelda 2 Race. Sucks to be you.

This is the first time (of my three complete runs) that I went out of my way to max my levels at 8 before going to the great palace, and it made a big difference.

I know you're not close to the end yet, but bookmark or remember this post because I've got some tips for you in advance while it's fresh in my mind:

  • At the very least, max out attack. Consider hitting Cancel when you auto-level at the end of a temple so that you can put that experience toward attack, if it isn't already on attack, but only if you have at least one life remaining. Don't want to lose all that exp!
  • If you need to level, any time after you have the fire spell, a good place is the plains around the town right after the raft port. Those blue spider things give 50 exp and aren't hard to kill. They occasionally drop 200exp bags. When you're low on health and can't cast Life, there's a town right there. You can get one or two thousand experience before boring of this.
  • Don't go to the great palace without getting Thunder spell first. You need it. I actually got to the boss earlier after forgetting this. Whoops! I was about to start a thread complaining about hard games but instead used it as practice for dodging his attacks.
  • I forgot where the fourth heart container is, but if you can find them, get them all.
  • When you're ready to go to the great palace, game over first and then save. After you've saved, gather whatever life-up dolls you know of, then head out. This way, if you game over, you can restart from your save and get those extra lives again. I didn't need them this time, but on your first try, you might. Doesn't hurt to be safe.
  • In the great palace, I've worked out a really good strategy for the red bird knights: Run.
  • But you'll need to do something different for the blue bird knights: Run faster. I hope you can remember this.
  • If you are a total wuss, there is a trick to beating Shadow Link. It takes all the fun out of it though, so you can look it up for yourself if you like.

Seriously, I think the blue bird knight is the hardest enemy in the game, including bosses. Someone told me there is a better strategy than mine, but it works for me.

The great palace is huge. There are tons of possible paths. There are dead ends. There are secret paths through ordinary-looking walls. There are things that aren't ordinarily in palaces. They went all out. You can use a map, of course, but then you will miss out on half of it. I'd suggest trying it until you're frustrated without a map. If you game over, you start at the beginning of the palace anyway, so it's no big deal.

What does the angry video game nerd have to do with this? I can't stand watching his videos long enough to figure out the relevance.

It's a playthrough/rant on Zelda II (I hesitate to call it a review...) uploaded, suspiciously, just as you finished your own playthrough, Adam.

Now that AVGN has done a video on this game, expect its popularity to sky rocket.

I think I told you a better strategy.
If you run, you will just take more damage than if you take the time to kill them.

Get up somewhat close to a blue bird knight (I think Mortal Kombat guides would call this "sweeping distance"), and watch his attacks carefully, and keep blocking.
When the bird knight jumps over your head, upstab him. Repeat.
I usually take 0 hits from the red knights doing this, and 1 from the blue knights.

Edit: pix hasn't been to this thread for a while. Did he give up?

Nope, I've been playing my newly bought copy of TimeSplitters 2, haha. Thanks for all the tips, y'all. Gonna resume playing this pretty soon.

Wouldn't surprise me if he quit. I don't think he has what it takes. Edit: Oh, hey there Pix, um, I didn't say anything.

And, ah, yea, that sounds like it'd work, but I don't take much more damage from them when I bravely run away, away, and the rest of the palace has gotten to be so much easier that the extra damage doesn't matter.

I just beat the third palace. It was actually a pushover compared to the last one. Only took me two tries and I beat the boss on my first one.

So how do I beat these spider and eye thingies?
