I got mine 11 days after Christmas, January 5th 2007, an old Wal-Mart that was going to move to a larger location (Small To Super Center) which just so happened to get one last shipment of Wii's and I knew I was really lucky, it was my late Christmas gift (Gift Card) What really made me want a Wii is the announcement of Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Mario Galaxy, which made me really want a Wii, I know have 34 games on the system and its constantly growing!
Wii Sports (Exercise on a video game? Me want!) The Virtual Console (I can get classic games! Woohoo!)
I got it in maybe 2007. My first game other than Wii Sports was Super Paper Mario. My dad complained that the first game I bought was the exact opposite of what the Wii was supposed to do . I've since acquired several more physically demanding games.
My first VC downloads were Star Fox 64 (since I loved Assault) and Paper Mario (addicted to TYD and SPM). Obviously, I've since downloaded many more VC games.
My first WiiWare download came much later. It was Homestar Ruiner. I beat it incredibly quickly, and have since beaten them all (it also means I've seen everything Homestar). I've since downloaded Drift Mania and Excite Bike World Rally.
I just needed something for my parents to get me for Christmas in 2009 since they wouldn't quit asking what I wanted and couldn't really think of anything else to say. I figured they's like Wii Sports Bowling and I wanted NSMBW, Punch Out!!! and MadWorld. Since then I've gotten 24 disc based games and 29 VC and WiiWare games for it.

I got mine for Christmas 2006 (right after the launch).
The reasons: 1. Backwards compatible with my GameCube games 2. Nintendo has the best exclusive franchises 3. Motion Controls 4. Virtual Console 5. Only $250
Ash: Professor Oak, how's your Bulbasaur?
Prof. Oak: Oh, it only hurts when I sit.
...
Prof. Oak: It's only Chansey if Krabby won't let go. Bye, now.
Ash: I don't think I'm going to call him anymore.
I'm a Nintendo fan through and through, i've had every system since the NES (except the Virtual Boy). That's the only reason I needed, but the VC & being backwards compatible with the Gamecube where pluses.
Now if only they'd kick up the VC releases, 1 or 2 a week isn't enough.
Flandre Scarlet, she's cute, she's colorful, she can blow up entire cities, she's also a vampire. Start running sparklepants.
It was the new console being released by Nintendo. That's all i needed. Got it Day 2 of release, and i actually bought Zelda the day before.
Word up
And mine was a very special purchase indeed - amazon.co.uk had quickly run out of all of it's stock. So I signed up to be notified when they would get a next batch. I got an email from them saying, 'ONE guaranteed in stock, it will go on sale at something like 14:30 GMT tomorrow.'
So there was me, sitting in a computer room at my university, logged on 10 minutes before that, constantly refreshing refreshing refreshing the page etc... then I saw it up for sale! I have never been so damn quick to click through screens in my life... because of course I was up against how many other people got the same email as me.... I waited nervously if I won the race... and it went through. I HAD IT!
But then I had to go to my hometown and pick it up - and I distinctly remember staying up until stupid o'clock when I got home being amazed at Wii Sports.
^ I know all that was slightly off topic but there you go
The Wii experience. Family, social, non-exclusional gaming. Getting of your ass. Variety of quality gaming of different kinds Some specific games Wiimote and nunchuck controls and gesturing!
for me, there was never any question. I'm a diehard loyal Nintendite, and i was going to get their system because i trusted them. Then i learned they were forever changing the way games were played and i was pumped. then i learned i could keep all my gamecube games, and there would be hundreds of downloadable virtual console games and you couldn't have paid me to keep my hands off.

1) Virtual Console! 2) Virtual Console!!! 3) Zelda series 4) Metroid series 5) Mario series 6) F-Zero, Starfox (I have still hope!)
I bought my Wii on launch day being a Nintendo fan since SNES days. Although I was very disappointed about the hardware specifics and didn't like the motion controls (my opinions about those matters haven't really changed since then). I don't use my Wii as frequently as former Nintendo consoles since I prefer Xbox360 and PS3 way more than Wii this generation. But I couldn't survive a console generation without my favourite Nintendo main series (so the successor of Wii gonna be a must-buy for me too). And Virtual Console is a great way to relive Nintendo's glorious past of course.

appreciate it, but i got the grammar taken care of, bro. i'm a newspaper editor, internet games reviewer, journal editor, and was just interviewed by my local tv station for my latest short story. however, given the grammar and spelling commonly seen on this wide web of ours, i don't figure being lazy with capitalization rules is really going to matter a whole lot.
and diehard is one word. the way you're spelling it, the implication is that you're literally not going to die.
ON TOPIC the Wii was something i was saving up to buy since the moment Iwata proudly held the black Revolution up to the crowd at E3 years ago, and the fact that it was cheaper than all the others just further convinced me to invest. now it's my favorite console, and wouldn't trade it for any other system in the world. except for maybe another Wii. made of diamonds.

Got my first one October 2007 (that took the use of a webtracker and a bit of lucky timing), why? Gottlieb Pinball Classics. Originally that and Williams Pinball Classics were the only games I was going to buy and then I decided to check out the catalogue, opened my mind to the possibilities and the rest is history. It's been a gaming renaissance for me.

Yo Dawg, so I hear you like pinball....
@zez: alright, then, no worries. and it's stylistic preference, I guess. in AP format, "diehard" is preferred (in the context) over "die hard", though in the context of the movies, "die hard" is correct. oh, the subtleties of english and the pointless nuances of the Associated Press!
