Well, if I were crazy enough to get all the coins again just for the sparkle, I'd definitely make sure to copy the file and never play the copy.

EDIT: Ah, so all this time I wasn't missing a secret exit, I was missing a normal exit. And since it is in an area of World 2 where there isn't a path already drawn out, I didn't notice it before. Yay, I have all the stars and hint movies now.

Just to confirm for anyone wondering, I have all 5 stars and I've had the Super Guide box pop up for sure twice, maybe a third time. So as long as you don't use it, you can get all 5.

Adam, hopefully someday you can find out what you're missing. >_<

Yeah, it's all quite simple - you get the 5 stars for completing the game, completing every level, completing every secret exit and warp cannon, collecting all the coins in world 1-8, and collecting all the coins in world 9.

If you don't trigger the Super Guide, your stars shimmer, if you do trigger it, they do not.

So the Super Guide effects how your stars look, but not how many you can get.

For the hint movies, if you beat the game, beat every level, find every secret exit and warp pipe, collect every coin, then you will unlock the hint videos as well.

Doesn't matter how sure you are - if you haven't got all the videos, you have missed something.

Not 100% accurate. You need all secret exits and normal exits. Just to be perfectly clear. It was a normal exit that I got last because I didn't notice it was missing.

Erm... beating a level is a normal exit.

So yes, 100% accurate.

Anyway, I'm currently playing back through the game again, got 5 stars on my first run through, but no sparkle due to Super Guide pop-up.

I WILL HAVE MY SPARKLE THIS TIME!

You can beat a level by getting a secret exit instead. That's certainly not failing the level, so I don't know what else you'd call it.

You'd call it taking the secret exit.

If you beat a level by the secret exit, you go back and do the normal one, or you'd end up confused and posting on a forum trying to work out what's going on.

Like you were.

I think most people understand that 'beat every level' is separate from 'find all secret exits'.

Anyway, you have solved the mystery now.

I'm sure it won't happen until my next playthrough...give me a year or more.
