Topic: Wii/Metroid: Other M help

I bought Metroid: Other M (preowned, was the only version they had ), I was playing it for about an hour, I paused the game on the HOME Menu to have dinner.

I went back to the game and went towards a door, a "Now Loading message" appeared in the bottom left. The screen then went black then an error message came on screen with:

"An error has occured. Press the EJECT button, remove the disc, and turn off the console."

I already had this appear before when playing CoD.

Anyways I reboot up my Wii, I start the game, but before getting to the Health & Safety screen, the same error occured.

Now none of my disc based games can be read...

So I just want ask if anyone else has had the same problem, and how they resolved it?

I've contacted Nintendo, but I don't really want to lose all my save data ect. so I just want to know if there could be another solution?

Thanks

P.S. If this is in the wrong section (Wii felt appropriate), then by all means move or delete. =p

Might be a dirty disc reading lens. Try the Wii lens cleaning kit, it should fix that if it is the problem

I don't have one of those. XD
I think I might have a Disc Reader cleaner lying around the house somewhere.

Also, it makes the usual "sound" when reading the disc, after about 10 seconds it makes a "chug" noise twice and stops reading the disc.

I put it on standby and unplugged it from the wall (as said in the Operations Manual) and it does fix it, but it still doesn't "read" it.

Go buy it! It's only like $10, unless u use the one u have (which I might not recommend, who knows if it will scratch or not)

It says DVD Cleaner, so probably won't work. XD

The strange thing is I bought SSBB (which is a dual layered disc like M:OM), but no problems reading it... could it be my Wii is just showing its age?

It is possible, if it's one of the first systems released from it's launch. Can you play downloaded games fine on it?

Yep, they're fine. Work perfectly.

I tried the DVD lens cleaner, and its helping it read the disc, but still can't get to the actual game. So I'm gonna see if I can buy a Wii lens cleaner tomorrow.

I'll try M:OM again. Wish me luck.

...that was a fail. I get to the wrist strap safety screen thing, but 10 seconds after that, it dies.

I've been searching around the interwebs and this seems to be a very common problem among players who bought Metroid: Other M. And the only way to fix it is to have a new disc reader installed or have it cleaned, which means sending it to Nintendo. And because dual-layered discs revelaed a design flaw in the Wii, its eligible to a free repair.

But, I do suggest a warning to anyone who buys this game.

Yes, see I had a similar problem with my Wii having trouble reading M:OM (but only M:OM, Brawl was able to load properly) So, I fashioned a homemade lens cleaning kit, and M:OM reads just fine I'd suggest getting the official lens cleaning kit though, since mine was awfully crude and potentially dangerous to my Wii's innards xD

It's a dual layered disc (at least I think so) alot of Wiis seem to have the problem over time...I know mine did...and yes that $10 cleaner kit works like a charm, but sometimes the lense is just way to dirty for that alone.
It's happening to me as well...actually is is more stubborn than brawl!

If you can, preferably with warranty, send it to Nintendo if the problem persists.

That would be hell. But I would have more HR.

this has been happening to my wii since before i bought Other M, so I doubt its really the game that's doing this to people's Wiis. In my experience, it happens when my Wii has been on for a while. Every time I get the error message, I've noticed that the Wii is hot to the touch, so I just turn it off for a bit, and then it works fine. Give it an hour or so.

the official cleaning kit works great. if you don't want to buy one, send it to nintendo (although that's way less practical). there's no magical other way around dual layer disc issues, those are your two options. i say buy the kit so you won't deal with the problem again a few years down the road.

have you turned wiiconnect24 off? the wii will never cool down otherwise, even when it's off.

I've turned it all off, left it turned off overnight, unplugged from the wall, cleaned the vents, but the same problem still exists.

I've phoned Nintendo and even THEY don't know what might have caused this to happen.

They asked me if I use Homebrew ect. and I answered no to all. So my Wii being bricked isn't the problem... so they think it might stop playing the discs due to thinking its "bricked" when in actuality, its not.

So they said they're gonna run a new update to see if that clears the problem, since they've had the same problem from other Wii/M:OM owners

Since dual-layered discs revealed a design flaw, all Wii's (whether under warranty or not) are eligible to a free repair/upgrade.

OH really? That is wonderful news then...if I keep having the problem when the lens kit fails i'll be happy to send it to Nintendo.

Thanks for that news =]

Well I was sent an e-mail from Ninty Land and they replied saying:

"We have never encountered this type of problem before, and we would like you to send us your Nintendo Wii Console free of charge for us to examine. If we cannot fix it, we will copy all your save data to a new Wii Console in a color of your choice and send it to you without charge."

Looks like I might get a free red Wii.

If you're worried about losing your save data, you can back that up to an SD card. Your new/repaired wii should have the same settings as your old one, so you'd be able to copy it back.

I am way too lazy to think of something clever.

Chris720

But Token Girl, not ALL saved data can be moved to the SD card (SSBB for example). So either way, that might be errdaicated since they can't guarantee that your save data will be saved.

Anyways, my friend says he might know what the problem is, so he's going to look at it for me and use special liquid to clean the lens. o.0

But if its broken, it'll have to go to Ninty anyways.
