For you, the day LordJumpMad graced your threads, was the most important day of your life. But for me, it was Tuesday. [url=http://www.backloggery.com/jumpmad]Unive...
@HolyMackerel all good, homie. my toes are fully intact. I can agree that MH3 is a game made up of some RPG elements, and not a pure RPG. But I disagree with the lack of roleplaying argument. The online play in MH3 reminds me a lot of my old D&D days. This was actually my 1st impression when I watched the game being played online for the first time. I watched 2 blademasters and a gunner take on a monster, each filling their niche in the fight, and I was like, "this is kind of like D&D, huh?" My friend was like, "yeah, now that I think of it." The way he was communicating with his fellow hunters to collectively take down the beast was the same way we used to cooperate to take down creatures in D&D. Mage casts a spell, Paladin swings sword, etc. Maybe I have a weird definition of roleplaying, as it comes from the older school. But in any case, RPG or not, MH3 is definitely working to fill the Wii RPG void for me.
One thing that helps that case in Monster Hunter 3 is that the combat is very realistic. In most RPGs, the language you're using is more along the lines of "He's down to 500 HP, start using your AoEs!" In Monster Hunter 3, when you're collaborating with your fellow hunters, you're saying things like "I'll keep him busy, someone cut off his tail, let the rest of us try breaking his legs, tranq him if he tries to run away" and things like that, stuff you would say if you were trying to take down one of these giant monsters in real life. It actually makes it much more fun that way, too, and does add a roleplaying element.

That's a good point actually. You do play a combat role in cooperation with your teammates. Though I think you could apply that to any cooperative game where players have different abilities from one another. Although thinking about it, the only multiplayer games where players have non-symmetrical abilities are RPGs with character classes. (Though MH does not have character classes, but weapon classes.) Yes, it's definitely inspired by RPGs.
Glad to hear it's filling your RPG void though. It has a similar sort of appeal.
@HolyMackerel It's definitely worth putting up with the intro, I think. And by that, I mean, if you liked it enough to get that far, you're going to like the game. The first part of the game very quickly weeds out the people who aren't going to like it, and then it explodes near the end, and that's why I like it so much.
I've been looking forward to Xenoblade since it was called "Monado: Beginning of the World". They'd better bring that to the US!
I'm looking forward to Dragon Quest X, personally.
I'd be excited to see a Dragon Quest or Pokemon RPG on the Wii, but since they're living large on the DSi I don't believe we'll live to see them on the Wii.
Monster Hunter 3 is that the combat is very realistic
No it isn't. My first encounter with jaggis I had to sharpen my starter weapon twice during combat before I killed one of them. Later to kill the Great Jaggi all you have to do is whack at him and drink your healing potions when you're near death.
I have to disagree. Popular Japanese RPGs are quite a different monster from CRPGs/tabletop RPGs. Their approach is a very streamlined adaptation of D&D that has evolved over decades into what it is today: described roughly, a cinematic/narrative experience punctuated by battle sequences heavily involving statistics. The developers make what they/their audience will enjoy (or what they think they will enjoy), so they don't usually see any need to "return to their roots" (unless, of course, the odd developer thinks people will enjoy that in which I applaud them). There is no "should", and JRPGs are certainly not without their merits. I remember reading an interesting article highlighting the differences between eastern and western RPGs, but it was a long time ago and I don't remember the site it was on.
If you remember what the genesis of a JRPG was, though (Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, to talk in simple terms), at the time those were both as advanced recreations of D & D as was possible at the time - the developers wanted to recreate D & D.
Since then it's become a genre in its own right, but at its core JRPGs still owe a great deal to the D & D formula, and you only need to look at the enduring popularity of Wizardry, which is very D & D like despite also being a JRPG series (these days), as proof ot that link.
I really will like to see RPG's (great ones) coming to the Wii, there are already lots on the DS and lots still coming, but come one, one on the Wii, will be amazing!!!
Arc Rise Fantasia is really fun, though the voice acting is atrocious. I also like Muramasa, though the story is somewhat lacking in comparison to Odin Sphere, its predecessor.

I gotten used to them, actually half of them aren't half-bad. The only thing about the game that currently ticks me off is the Mt. Everest difficultly spike during boss fights....I have to literally grind my butt off just to have a good shot at killing them, and it doesn't help that once you are higher level than the monsters you are fighting, you get a huge penaltly in XP gain. For ex. I Earned 1550 from killing a group, each member only earned between 250-300.
Another thing is poor save point placement. First encounter of crazy ridiculous boss, all the enemies were cakewalk material...I practically 2 shot them, and then the here comes the boss without warning after many cutscenes and puzzles. He 1 shots my entire party after my turn is over (should have defended...) but then bam...have to start the whole place over.
/rant other than that the music is nice with a couple likable characters (so far), story is nice, battle system is fantastic. Basically it's just go to this town, go to this dungeon, go to this town, then this dungeon just feels more repetitive than lets say...tales titles ....but doesn't bother me too much.

I also hate how the EXP works. I usually spam trinity acts in battles, which helps a lot. I spent one battle spamming about 8-12 trinity acts and had no problem with the boss fight, even though I was three levels below the boss.
