Topic: Wii Repairs Question

Hello everyone, I wanted to ask everyone who has sent their Wii consoles in for repairs (hopefully there are some here) a couple questions. When you sent it in, about how long did it take for it to get returned? And when you got it returned, did you lose any data at all? Thanks.
EDIT: Also, it would be helpful to me if you wrote exactly what the problem was with your system. Thanks again.

I've sent mine in a couple of times and in both cases the repairs were completed and my Wii back in my hands within two weeks of posting.

In the first instance I had made a stupid mistake mucking about with region settings via a hack; the only fix was to swap out the main board which naturally meant that everything saved was lost. The impact was mitigated by the fact that I made it a habit to keep backups of my save data on SD card. My Wii Shop account was linked to the new system, so I still had access to all my Wii Shop purchases. The only games which I lost save data for were those which do not allow you to copy save data - games with online components - and Wii Play and Wii Sports. The latter was because of the way they identify Miis. Newer "Wii ..." titles like Wii Play Motion and Wii Fit only care if the associated Mii is on the system, not whether or not it originated there. Wii Play and Wii Sports however will not associate save data with a Mii unless that Mii was created on the system the save data comes from. Since my system board had changed my Wii no longer had editing rights to my Miis and my Miiis were not seen as the ones linked to the save data for those two games. Lame.

My second repair was due to an optical drive failure. This was repaired speedily and no loss of data occurred. I think I had the machine back within the week.

Please note that I'm located in the UK, so the experience in other territories may vary.

Ok, thanks for the post. I'm guessing that if something is just wrong with my A/V cable plug in (on the Wii) that wouldn't cause any save data loss, especially since I know everything is still on there, and 2 weeks doesn't sound too bad.

Well, I wouldn't be sure about that because I seem to recall from the one time I took my Wii apart that outside of the optical drive everything is on the system board. It's a really compact little machine on par with the stuff you see from Apple in terms of cramming everything into as small a space as possible. Unless the issue is with the port itself and it's just replacing a ribbon cable they might well need to swap out the main board.

In any event I'd be sure to back everything up to SD card that you can. If nothing else it will save you having to re-download any WiiWare/VC content in the event of a disaster. I think restoring downloads took me longer than anything else!

I hope it's the port itself. I still get sound from the TV, just no video.

Honestly, the only 2 things I'm really worried about losing is the data for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Xenoblade Chronicles. Everyone says that they keep your Shop Channel account intact, and I don't mind redownloading everything.

Ah that does suck. Well when you send it off explain your fears; hopefully they'll be able to transfer your save data if it comes to that.
