Topic: Why doesn't VC/WiiWare have 200 point games?

I currently own a Wii and DS phat, so i can get all the good games that come out for both systems... but i'm left out of the downloadable DS titles. which is fine. only a handful have interested me, anyway. but what i don't understand is why 200 point games/apps are limited to DSiWare... why not the Wii's downloadable service? for WiiWare, i could see those Happy Holidays abombination things being 200 points. and on the VC, with all the work Ninty does trying to add consoles to the service, i don't understand why we don't have 200 point Atari 2600 games! i would definitely shell out 200 each for pong, breakout, adventure, pitfall, yar's revenge, and warlords, among others. there've been several times i've been left with 200-400 points on my account after a card, and i have to wait a LONG time before my next card, when i would much rather just get a small Atari game or two... anybody else up for this?

The addition of 2600 games have been suggested several times here, and I agree it would be nice to see on the service.

Plus it would be fun to see the release news articles get drowned in angry comments from all the silly "ever game older than the NES sucks, no exceptions" kids out there.

Agreed, a 200-point price point would be nice. I also would very much like to see 2600 titles on the VC, but I would actually be happy paying 500 points for those.

@Adamant: it would be entertaining, as always, to watch stupidity reveal itself.

aside form the 2600 games, though, there could be a lot of neat, little things for the Wii. for example, there could be different backgrounds you could buy for your Wii menu for 100 points as kind of pre-release promotionals for big games, or whatever. you could even get different music for your Wii menu, instead of that ringing sound. or a 200 point alarm clock. which i know you're thinking that would be kinda pointless since in the same room as your Wii, you likely have your DS, or a nearby microwave, or even an actual alarm clock, but think about it this way. you set the alarm from your Wii menu because you have to leave to go somewhere in an hour and want to play till then. so you boot up your game, and play without ever looking at a clock. at the set time, your alarm goes off, either flashing something on your screen, or making a noise (or both), or pausing your game and telling you it's time so you're sure to not miss it. then you can turn the alarm off and decide to keep playing, or turn the system off and go to that appointment without having to get up and walk over to the alarm clock or into the next room to your microwave to turn off the chirping. i think there are almost as many useful little apps like that that could be used for the Wii, as there are for DSi.

Pitfall, Enduro, Adventure, Haunted House, Sea Quest, Frostbite for 200 Wii Points! Yes please:) Seriously I like the idea and if they could work out something with Atari and Activision I'm sure this could happen.

I think ZX Spectrum games would be good additions for the 200 points - 300 points range.

Edgey, Gumshoe, Godot, Sissel, Larry, then Mia, Franziska, Maggie, Kay and Lynne.

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

There are some arcade titles that should be priced at around 200 points. Games like Frogger, Pong, Zoo Keeper, Pole Position are very short games and would be great at 200 points

In Japan Namco sells games like these for 800pts.

that is a first-class rip-off. they're good games, and i'm with Sean in that i'd pay 500 for some of them (though i'd prefer 200), but they are NOT on the same level of qualty as the SNES, i don't care who you are.

200 pennies for a good classic is a rip off for the guys who made them games.

@Ezekiel: i've a good feeling the "guys who made them games" are not going to get any money for it anyway, as most of them are not still making games. it's been 30 years since some of those came out. and the companies that own the titles aren't going to make any more money off of them, either, in hard copy form, so their best bet it downloadable, and they'd easily get more money from 200 point games than from 800. it's stupid all around and it's what is known as taking advantage of the customer.

It's better than $0, isn't it? It's not like they make any money off of used games.
Besides most of the money would go to Atari/Infogrames anyway, since all early Atari titles were first-party.
That is, until some programmers broke off to form Activision.

Yeah, most of the old timey game programmers never saw a dime in residuals and never even got public credit for their work. Hence, as NotEnoughGolds mentioned, the birth of Activision.

Atari 2600 titles I'd like to see come to the VC as well. I mean, Pitfall: The Mayan Adventure (MegaDrive) had the original 2600 Pitfall as a hidden bonus, so it could be possible someday. Although I would gladly pay 200 Wii Points for certain games for the 2600 (ones that I'm interested in; a lot).

To each their own

Porky

@bro2dragons not 32 quarters but 20 quarters for an old classic is reasonable. Someones got to be making money putting games on wiishop.

I would welcome 2600 games. Activision already has a game on the VC, so there's some third party support right there if Activision wanted to. The little kiddies need some good classics from the early '80's.

A couple dozen 1978-1985 arcade games are worth more to me than the entire SNES library. I'm happy to pay 800 points for awesome arcade games like Bosconian.
