Opinions.

"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."

Nintendo has always been a company that tried to get everyone into gaming. There's nothing really new that they're doing this gen. It's just that they turned the idea of an expanded audience into a business art form. As for the hate, well, I've never cared much for MySims. It always seemed like a casualization of a game that was casual to begin with. In other words dumbed down.

Even if Wii had fantastic 3rd party support, it'd still be ridiculed due to the lesser visuals. Remember when a company used to say a game for all next gen systems and the Wii didn't count? That still goes on. Developers are typically bitter because they can't maximize their art assets. Being forced to develop for the Wii must make devs want to quit their jobs.

It's funny though, devs always talk about wanting a chalenge and developing a competent game around Wii controls seems like a great opportunity imo, but I guess all they care about is their artistic designs and not focusing on pure fun.

It's crazy, but I honestly think that to the vast majority, the rift is too far to go back. They've divorced themselves so much from Nintendo and the company aesthetic that Nintendo could turn around and come out with an HD 1080p console with support from a lot of popular Devs and they'll STILL get hated on.

What I think is weird is that Nintendo's own fanbase, as has been implied in this thread, can be just as ravenously biased to a staggering degree. It's like either they're for Nintendo all the way or they're against it all the way and that's not cool. As Obi Wan Kenobi said, "Only Sith Deal in Absolutes".

Might be the problem is that Wii (not Nintendo, but just Wii) has a quite umbalanced set of games. First, the fact is that most current Wii games are of very very poor quality, and then also most of them are oriented for casual users or family games with very few titles for the hardcore gamers. Nintendo DS has a much better balanced set of games than Wii in this aspect. So, the fact is that Wii is definitively not satisflying everybody, but the community less satisfied is just composed by these people most in-touch with hi tech and internet (not granpa or granma), so it is logical to find many places around internet filled up with their posts.

That's a good point, you're probably going to get hate on any platform out there. I do frequent GT and I must say, while every video might have a few trolls who just like to be stupid, the sheer AMOUNT of stupidity flowing out of this post is scary. Observe:
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/review-mysims-agents/57169

Of course now the comments are bit nicer because people from GoNintendo went on there to bash the "haters". But if you pull back to the first couple pages of comments, the amount of hate is staggering.

This isn't a Wii thing. This is a trend with all Sims games.

Observe the comments from Sims 3, which just came out.
"This gets 9.0 but red faction guerilla gets 7.9? This is the sims again. It's fun but come on."
"kinda girly."
"piece of s*** i hate the sims"
"Good review, s*** game."
"yeah s*** game."
"Gaaaaay"
"Wonder how many hookers ea had to send over to get that score."
"I'm too hardcore for this."
"I refuse to buy Sims games"
"I f***ing hate sims 2... Never ever gonna buy this..."
"even the sims 3 got a higher rating then halo wars lol..."
"gay"
"GAAAAAAAY"
"I hate the Sims. "
"looks boring"
"What a load of crap. No sims game can amuse me."
"...dumb."
"sucks."
"Sims = yawn"
"get fallout 3 there a good game"
"Oh well too bad, they had a good run, now they might end up like Sonic... "
"I hate the sims and if there was an option to go on a mass murdering killing spree in the game with a chainsaw I would just rent it to kill the whole town!!!"
"Isn't it better to have your own real life out side the box ? There are many games in my opinion that need to be made but that ??? Anyway, just can't understand why people play that !"
"seriuiosly, GET a LIFE ... dont be fooled by Sims ... this concept is the biggest sin in video-gaming history..."

One thing I've always found laughable is when somebody tries to quantify how 'good' or 'bad' a console is by the number of 'bad' games out for it. What difference does THAT even make? I would rather quantify the desireability of a system based on the number of GOOD games that I actually want. Let's face it, the Atari 2600 and NES were laden with crummy games, I really don't think that tarnishes those systems overall one bit. You just don't buy those carts. Who cares how many of them are buried in a landfill? (Well, greenpeace might )

Defending the Wii is hard.

I'm in Jamaica right now (doing final year of high school) and whenever the words "Wii" or "Nintendo" cross my lips, I hear either one of these responses. "Wii sucks, PS3 is better" or "360 is the better platform" or the one that irritates me the MOST "PS3/360 has better graphics."
I know the graphical superiority of the PS3 and Xbox 360, but what you see isn't always what you get.

On the portable side, I'm happy more of my Jamaican friends lean towards the DS, while there are some haters out there who defend the PSP, (yet some despise the PSPgo just because it has no UMD slot).

I can go on as long as I want about all the Wii bias among these so-called gamers, but I stick to my guns. We all know Nintendo may not be technically or graphically superior but I know damn sure you will thank them for your interest in video gaming because Mario (and R.O.B) brought it all back with the NES, and also bringing out the best portable system ever, and for showing people that innovation and gameplay matters in a game, not how flashy the animations look or the story or even the hype it generates.

There is one thing I will make clear: If Nintendo ever decided to step up their game further with their systems, Sony and Microsoft WILL be getting their asses handed to them by the superiority that is all of the Nintendo franchises ever made. Nintendo did it with the N64 (Jumping from 16-bit to 64-bit, though stepping backwards with cartridges), and goddamn it, they will do it again. Mark my words.

If Nintendo gives all they got, they will kick Sony's and Microsoft's butt out of the gaming industry and have a monopoly.

Then who's going to challenge them now? Probably no one else.

[quote=Gigantorama Why all the hate?

Personally I think that a lot of folks are still pissed at Nintendo for opening the gaming pool to include everyone, young and old, gamer or not. Suddenly the activity they clung to so dearly is being overrun with the same individuals who probably ostracized them for their interests. Times changed and they couldn't handle it. What do you guys think?

I did, actually. I know that's probably how it was in the beginning, but I figured it's been THREE YEARS since the damn thing came out, shouldn't all the ignorance die down? I mean the "Wii" jokes pretty much stopped, but all this consternation seems to follow Nintendo everywhere on the net.

The ones who hate the Wii are the fanboys for the opposing companies and the ugh... hardcore gamers.

It's not the fact they "opened up gaming to everyone" that is troublesome. It's more they stopped making hard games for more experienced gamers altogether.

Why not make both casual games and "hardcore" games rather than trying to combine them into one? It rarely goes well when a game tries to do both (take Madden 10 for example). I'm not necessarily against games like Wii Sports, but I'm against the fact that it discourages deeper sports simulation games and has encouraged companies like EA to make their titles more casual with less options to them.

Well, I look at it like this. I beat Gears of War on the hardest possible difficulty, but I haven't gotten perfect scores on Wii Fit yet. Why? It's not because I don't like Wii Fit. Some of the mini-games on their are actually fun. Some of those games are just so dang hard.

So...apparently difficulty is not a factor for people that don't like these games. Wii Fit being harder than Gears to master. (Well...it is for me in any case) In fact, I think this issue between hardcore and casual was covered in Super Paper Mario was it not? Didn't one of the doors ask you if, "You enjoyed going on the internet and talking about games you've never played?" Lol.

One of my favorite games in Wii Fit is the one where you have to control the table to get the balls in the holes. Kind of like the mini-game seen on Twilight Princess.

It's not just how hard the game is now that I think of it. But the depth. A lot of Wii games don't have the same depth as games on other consoles. Some do. Super Mario Galaxy does. Some don't, such as Wii Music.

I'm not sure what your basis is for that statement. Wii Music actually is quite a deep experience; it just depends on how much effort you want to put into it and how difficult you find it.

Why, of course Wii Music is deep! Why doesn't love blasting "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star"?

Well the song selection can be a little better for one thing. I'm a bit surprised they didn't use more of their classic Nintendo songs, rather than just a couple.

You make the song go faster, and you can make it go slower. There isn't much more depth to it than that. I realize the amount of instruments you can try, but overall I wasn't impressed.

It has gotten several poor reviews except from 1up.com, so it's not like I'm the only one that feels this way.

Guys, I hate to tell you this, but we might be in an war with the haters after all. And I'm not responsible for this.

We cannot let this site be hijacked by haters, this is one of the last resorts for true fans of Nintendo.
