this been a slight fear for me on all of the current gen, i have put out around 200$ into wii points since i got my wii over a year ago, if nintendo was smart then they would have a transfer system ether let to from sd card or usb cable move games over, or have discount deal, if you owned the game on the other system then you can save 50 to 75% off rebuying it.
but none of this current gen have openly talked the future of there download games with next gen

I'm guessing this gen will be here a little longer than most others. Suddenly having a new high dollar machine out right now would be a very bad idea.

...maybe they'll have a "shop account transfer" feature for next gen.

A shop account transfer would be good, especially if the account is passworded.

i like the usb cable idea, the new system and the will could link and in doing so the new system would only link to that wii and no others stopping any illegal doings. but yet that might never happen

I like the idea of moving the games over with a memory card and once hooked up to the new system just downloading the licenses.

They're basically trying to avoid people installing games on someone's Wii and then downloading it again to repeat the act, especially if that person is charging for copying games.

I suggest transferring everything from one Wii to another, including the registration and account. Basically, you transfer everything to the new Wii, and then erase everything from the original Wii.

That's not true. Microsoft stated plans to make their next system 100% compatible with all Xbox 360 games, retail and download, and let you transfer your Xbox Live account and saves to the new system and lose nothing! Problem is, it's not a very well-known statement for some reason I don't know.

Nintendo would be fools not to include software transfer to any future Wii (even an incremental upgrade such as the projected Wii+) if only to ensure people who presently have a Wii have an incentive to buy a new one. I could see the use of a special trade-in or upgrade program with Nintendo direct or through select major retailers to facilitate this, though it would clearly require some kind of work to ensure it proceeds smoothly. They're going to have the same issue with any successor to the DSi and I'm sure they won't expect people to collect handhelds for downloaded content.

Shifting to server-side hosting of user-purchased content adds to the hardware and company lock-in for folks and leveraging that by allowing upgrades only makes obvious business sense.

I'm not worried in any event because the first thing to wear out on your Wii is going to be the optical drive anyway; already you can replace those yourself. I would expect the Wii to outlive an old cart-based system; it'll probably be easier to get parts for it.

A "transfer cable" type solution seems possible, similar to what MS did when they released the larger hard drives for 360 -- allows for a one-way transfer of your hard drive contents to the new drive. Of course, the gamertag-DRM connection i'd assume plays into this as well.

According to what I've read, buying VC and Wiiware games gives you "permission" to play it on one console only, and given Nintendo's money hungry rep, I'd have to say that come next generation, we won't be able to keep ANYTHING that was downloaded. Personally, Ima keepin' my Wii for like, ever. Hell, I had my NES, SNES and N64 until I got my Wii, so there.

Yeah, I am basically going to use my Wii as a time capsule with all of the great games from my childhood. I just hope it never breaks on me...

I'm quite certain you overestimate the life cycle of the Wii. There's no WAY the thing will still be Nintendo's main console then! It COULD still be around dying a slow death like the PS2 is right now, though.

Yeah, I've noticed there aren't that many ps2 games coming out anymore. On gamestop, there are none listed for 2010

Ps2 stop making games in december... (at the end of the year)

The last ps2 game is band hero.

I think Nintendo could lose a lot of potential buyers of the Wii 2 if the people who have spent hundreds of dollars buying things off the VC and WiiWare shops can't transfer the games over from the 1st Wii. I would probably be one of the lost potential customers.

Agreed, I'm still a big fan of the classics with VC games outnumbering WiiWare by nearly a 2-1 margin (and many WiiWare games I own are just refreshed classics besides!), so a flash new console is less appealing to me on it's own than as a hardware upgrade I can transfer my existing stuff to.

Of course my Japanese Wii becomes problematic at this point -- I cannot see collecting those, but how would I go about transferring my stuff to a new one? Send it to NoJ with a note and hope they have translators?
