Topic: What Happens to Our VC Games Next Generation?

I agree with what Maniac said about Club Nintendo. I've been saying for a while that if Nintendo needs to find a way to transfer games to the next system, they'll probably use Club Nintendo. The concept is very simple, though I can't speak for the actual programming of it:

All your games are linked to your Club Nintendo account. You buy the next new Nintendo console (with ongoing VC and hopefully even WiiWare support) and link your Club Nintendo account to it just like you did with your Wii. It senses the fact that your account is already linked to a Wii and tells you that you can transfer the entire account to your new console, warning you that this is a one-time no-going-back deal.

the shpydar mentioned the PSP Go. That shouldn't pose a problem because you already KNOW your downloads are linked to your PSN account, which can be transferred to new systems. The problem with Nintendo consoles is the lack of that type of user profile which has already been designed to work that way. CN is our best shot.

Lol, true. It will be quite some time before this becomes a forefront issue (at least beyond the "my replacement Wii won't play my VC games" aspect).

If this concern is keeping people from downloading as many games as they might if they knew it wouldn't be a problem, I'd say that makes it a forefront issue. Even if you ARE downloading a lot of games, living in fear of your console breaking and you being screwed out of several hundred dollars is NOT fun!

The Wii Shop channel gives you an "account" does it not? It tells you what your account activity has been and what you purchased recently. Now, couldn't nintendo simply transfer the accounts? Or just have the new VC identicle to the current and allow the accounts to remain untouched? Because you could easily just re-download everything in that case, as anything you've purchased and deleted (or in this case, you switch to Wii2 and all your games are gone) can be re-downloaded for free.

The best strategy in the game: go up stairs and pause balls.

StriderNo9

Yeah, this isn't an issue to be short sighted on. As Stuffgamer1 said, I worry that I will be wasting so much money on games and then get screwed in the end. It prevents me from buying more games sometimes.

Nintendo can transfer accounts to a new Wii, but if your Wii is damaged you would likley have to send it in to them get a replacement and then contact them to have the account replaced. They won't just take your word for it.

Maybe we'll be able to give them are Wii console code and it will unlock them to be downloadable.
This is a topic that sits deeply in my mind, I would like to get a black Wii if we get it in the States but I woudn't have my VC or WiiWare games, so this prevents me from buying a new system! hopefully the WiiHD will address this problem for us Core Nintendo Fans. I to would by dozens more VC games if they put our minds at ease!
Its so convienient to just use my Wii then drag out the NES, SNES, N64, or any other dusty system.
Maybe one of us should call Nintendo and ask, there orders number is 1-800-255-3700 .

Not a bad idea, none of these ideas are, I think my point was, since this is a new thing for gamers and devs alike, it's important we don't let them set a standard that we dont care what happens to our digital games when the next generation comes around.
It's not world shattering but it's something we should pay attention to and let them know we expect a plan that's better than "rebuy them".

Is it worth worrying about so soon? The Wii has several years left in it - two at the least I reckon.

Even if there is no way to transfer VC games to the next system, is it that much of a hassle to keep your Wii?

I'm throwing my money at the screen but nothing happens!

Exactly. For anyone who is restricting their downloads due to fear of a possible future breakdown, keep the above in mind. Keep your transactions recorded on your Club Nintendo and send in any problem hardware and you will get it all transferred over to a replacement. The "next gen" question is an entirely different matter and for the most part, everything surrounding it is just conjecture. What is NOT conjecture is the troubleshooting solutions that Nintendo already has in place for faulty units.

Either way, just download whatever you want and stop worrying. If it breaks, there is already a working solution (happened to my parent's system, and it turned out fine), if a next gen Nintendo comes out and you end up not being able to transfer everything over... well, then you'll just have to keep your Wii around, which really isn't all that bad, and certainly isn't a reason to prevent yourself from enjoying great games now.

This is part of what I'm saying- its definetly more of a hassle to keep an NES, SNES, Genesis/Mega Drive, TG-16, Neo-Geo, and N64 hooked up to your entertainment centre. That probably won't stop very many of us from having all these retro systems hooked up anyway (a la AVGN) so what's a Wii to add to all that?

What if you bought some games on VC, then AFTERWARD got a Club Nintendo Account, and then your Wii breaks down? Do you have to repurchase the games, or will the account save all of the games you purchased before the making of the account?

I can't see our VC/Wiiware titles not being transferable to the next system, either for free or a very small surcharge. When Nintendo launches its next console, it's going to want sales, sales and more sales -- not people holding out because they don't want to replace all of their downloaded titles.

Then again, Nintendo doesn't always do what's logical. I can't have blind faith like some of you. I think questioning it is a good thing.

The Club Nintendo idea is the best solution that I can think of. It kinda, sorta, almost feels like, an Xbox Live kind of ID. If you "create" a Club Nintendo account, then everything Nintendo related gets linked to you. I have all four of my DS's (2 lites for my daughters and 2 DSi's for my wife and I), and my Wii hooked up to my Club Nintendo account. Every time I buy a piece of software that is Nintendo related for the DS or Wii, I register it not only to say, HEY NINTENDO, I bought your game, but when I download something on WiiWare it will show me that download history on my account. In theory, if it's linked to that Club Nintendo account, WE should be able to move it over to the "next/newest" console.

Whatever the case may be, I don't think it's soon enough to worry about such a matter. There are a good few games I wouldn't bother re-purchasing if it ever came down to it: there are only very few I'd be interested in replaying as is. I like the VC for the fact that it allows me to experience those games I never had the chance to play, but I don't expect to complete most of them more than once.

This discussion makes me think about how much better digital distribution is on my computer. Barring developers (and their sites) from going under, I'll be able to play all of the games I acquired in such a fashion for years to come. There actually are a few games I have bought five/six years ago for which I simply plugged in my registered e-mail address and license code when I moved to a new computer, and presto! the games work just as they ever did.

I'm pretty sure it's the latter. Club Nintendo SHOULD read your download history when you link it so that everything is up-to-date from the word "go."

I think that's correct. I didn't sign up for Club Nintendo until maybe a year after getting my Wii, and my profile still has all the VC i downloaded previous to then.

It's been over two years since I got my Wii and still haven't got an Club Nintendo account. Is it worth getting an Club Nintendo Account? And before answering that question, is Club Nintendo free?
