Please don't flame me, I have never played a BIT.TRIP game before. Seeing how great they seem to be, I am thinking about trying a BIT.TRIP game. Which one should I get first?
Retro Studios, go reboot Star Fox. The franchise needs it.
Hmmmm, my personal favorite is RUNNER but maybe that's not the one to start with. The first 3 (BEAT, CORE, and VOID) are slightly cheaper so if for some weird reason you don't like one you will have spent slightly less. CORE is definetely the hardest so if you like that it might interest you. BEAT is the first in the series, and not without reason, so I'd say that's probably your best option.
"Oooh, yes I said it! I said it! I said it 'cause I caaan!" My Backloggery
RUNNER is the easiest, I think, and it was the first one I really liked. I'd say go with that one. I own VOID and FATE too; VOID is pretty hardcore and FATE starts pretty slow. I also tried out BEAT back when we had demos, and the crazy flashes hurt my eyes. Plus it was crazy hard.
I haven't played all of them. I didn't like the demo of Beat (the first one), haven't played the second or third one. Even though I though Runner was greatly overrated (a 10/10, really?) I did like it a lot. Especially the music combined with gameplay. The last one, you can try out for yourself this monday. Then comes the Fate demo.
The problem is that all the five games are really different. Fate is a shooter, Runner is a platformer, Beat I think is best described as a Pong like game. The other two I haven't played and can't judge or describe them.

I'd get Beat first, as it's a great game and lays the foundation for the entire series. It'll give you a good grasp of the rhythm-based gameplay that forms the core Bit.Trip experience, and it's also the one people seem most likely to enjoy.
Quality wise, I'd say...
Void > Runner > Beat > Fate > Core
But Beat is certainly the best starting point, for my money.
I've tried all of them and think RUNNER is the best. BEAT was cool but the visual sometimes obscured the paddle, which angered me greatly. As a shooter I felt FATE was much too slow, but it's also the one that requires the least amount of memorization. The other two didn't really sit well with me.
Start with BEAT and then decide from there. Personally, I plan to get them all as time permits. CORE is REALLY hard and does not come recommended for starters!
Yup, get RUNNER first. FATE would make for a very interesting entry point to say the least, and CORE and VOID would be just plain horrible imo. BEAT isn't a bad starter but it's definitely one of the harder ones which may turn you off.
Get all of them. Grab two points cards, and just buy all of them. Start at Beat, and get them in order, the way they were meant to be played. You won't be dissapointed.
But seriosly. You'll be able to try a demo of Bit Trip. Fate on this monday's download tomorow. I played only the first 2 and though theyre tough, playing them to the beat is cool. Though I think that someone said that Fate doesnt quite use the beats like the the previous ones.
Personally..Im looking forward to trying this one. Would have been cool to have a demo of runner though.
The problem is that all the five games are really different.
Durp. Sounds like a serious problem.
It is a serious problem if someone wants one game of the series to see if it's anything they would like. Buying all of them isn't the solution, especially if all of them are so different. If you hate platform games, chances are you are going to hate Runner as well. Same with Fate, if shooters are not your thing, then neither is Fate.
