Do you think Nintendo will allow us to transfer all our VC games to the next Nintendo system?

Of course.

They better. The inflexibility they have with switching games between Wiis has me concerned about that.

Definitely. Although I probably won't get the next system.

Possibly, though since we know nothing about Nintendo's plans for the future so it's all conjecture.

I will say the fact that your shop account is linked to your hardware means that right now you can't even transfer games between existing Wiis; hopefully they'll do the intelligent thing marketing-wise and change this with a firmware update closer to launch (I seriously doubt they're going to have a trade-in program -- the logistics and overhead from that would chill any project manager's blood!) or build in some method of transfer into the successor system.

Of course they could also cut the cord and leave the VC as an artifact of this generation and move on to original content for the next figuring that people who are only interested in the VC aren't likely to do the upgrade anyway...

I hope they do. Maybe Nintendo would allow us to link our current VC and Wiiware purchases to the new system, with the only need to copy the save files for those games.

They better be.

i think so, but what i'm worried about is that i probably won't have the money for the new system at launch, and i want to know if they'll continue the service for the dead Wii until i can get up the money to buy the new system.

i hope so. i have a great wiiware and Virtual console collection it would be a shame not to have it on my next nintendo system.

A simple firmware update could give you the ability to transfer your shop channel information to a limited number of systems. Similar to how Apple does it with iTunes. Of course this would require the user to have an account with Club Nintendo as that is linked to the current set up. It seems evident to me that Nintendo is really pushing that so I bet that's what they're planning.

Future Wii purchases:
Super Mario Galaxy 2
Metroid: Other M
Zelda Wii
New Super Mario Bros. Wii
Sin and Punishment 2

Doubt it.

Is it after 9PM EST? You should probably ignore the above post.

I expect Nintendo will offer a one time trade to the next console (I'll call it "Wii2") from the Wii. You still won't be able to trade between Wiis and you won't be able to trade a VC game on the Wii2 to another Wii2 nor would you be able to trade back to the Wii. Maybe once you traded your first game to the Wii2, it becomes locked so only games from one particular Wii can be traded to that one particular Wii2.

I would also like the Wii Shop to continue on the Wii2. Games for consoles supported on the Wii will already be available on the Wii2 as well as WiiWare games. However the Wii2 would offer exclusive consoles for the VC and WiiWare games that won't be able to be downloaded on the original Wii (maybe larger arcade games, larger NeoGeo games, possibly Dreamcast games, Gamecube games and maybe even PlayStation 1 games - if the XBOX 360 can have Symphony of the Night then so could the Wii2).

I can't really say it's going to happen, but it could. However, regardless, I wouldn't care.

@KnuckleSonic8: You seem to really enjoy the Wii, but why would you probably not get the next Nintendo console?

@Sean Aaron: I would hate for Nintendo to drop the Virtual Console next generation. It will be one of my deciding factors if I'm going to be getting the next system by Nintendo.

@Bass X0: Why Playstation 1 games? Even if it's not Sony's developed or published games, Nintendo could still get sued for putting there game on there compeatitor console. It's not going to work. Sega Saturn games are more likely, and hey, it might be filled with imports.

he's saying that if Sony and Microsoft can work out a deal to allow Symphony of the Night to be played on an Xbox, perhaps Ninty and Sony can work out some kind of deals for PS1 games on the next Wii as well. i doubt it'll happen (it'd be nice, though), but Ninty wouldn't be so stupid as to not work out a deal with Sony first before going forward with something like that.

Yes. I don't know what happened to get Symphony of the Night on the XBOX 360 but it is a port of the PS1 game. The Banjo-Kazooie games are ports of the N64 games (right down to the appearance of the Game Boy which I found surprising). I don't know if Microsoft had to contact Sony and Nintendo to be able to emulate their consoles on the XBOX 360 or if they didn't need to. Maybe someone could shed some more light onto this subject.

Oh and the Saturn is notoriously difficult to emulate with even modern top spec P.C.'s reportedly not being able to manage it properly. The Wii2 would probably have to have actual an Saturn built into it (not literally the casing, just the Saturn's insides minus the CD player) to be able to run downloadable Saturn games.

Almost certainly. They'd be drowning in e-mails the minute the system was released if you couldn't transfer.

No offense but, if you rebought them, you'd be a fool.

When Nintendo comes out with their next generation system, this is one point I'll be looking at very carefully. Since they have the online system up and running, there is no reason it cannot port over to the next generation. If it does not, and Sony and Microsoft's setup does ... I'll be buying a next generation system from one of them and NOT Nintendo. I find it hard to believe that these systems will not allow virtual games to be transferrable. If they honestly expect us to rebuy them each and every time they come out with a new console ... they're crazy. If we buy them each and every console ... forget crazy, we'd just be stupid.
