Topic: Three 2D Wii Masterpieces: Which One Should I Buy?

Posts 1 to 20 of 49

I am pretty new to Nintendo Life, I've posted a few comments, but this is my first time on the forum.
Basically I love 2D game design. However, I do not have much money, so it is becoming increasingly common that my Wii purchases are Virtual Console and WiiWare (for example my last download was Contra ReBirth).
O.K, so here is my question. Here is a list of 3 simply superb 2D Wii games (full disk games).
1. Klonoa (£22.50)
2. Wario Land: Shake It! (£28.00)
3. Muramasa: The Demon Blade (£33.50)
I realise that they all have different play styles, but I am a fan of each genre (e.g. Platform, Action RPG, Fighting).
I obviously can not decide. It is not even as though I could wait for one to become cheap, I am a UK gamer who imports games from Canada and they do not seem to go down much in price. Klonoa is easily the cheapest and Muramasa is the most expensive.
I want to play a 2D game which makes me feel like 3D never happened, as if 2D artistry was the main gaming style and it constantly grew and improved over the 13 years after the SNES. I'd like to hear from 2D fans who have played these games. Therefore, I will wait before deciding to allow more US gamers to play Muramasa and advise me.
Cheers lots, Nintendo Life people. Jamie
Which one do you think I should buy?

I am passionate about retro gaming, from antiquated consoles to the continuation of classics. Obviously I love PSone, and PS2 retro games. I blast my ears to breakneck melodic punk, gruff vocals and nimble alternative guitar hooks.

Wario Land disappointed me (I'm a huge 2D platformer fan). I'd get Klonoa.

I like Wario Land Shake It a lot. Highly recommended.

I've never played Klonoa, or Muramasa, but Wario Land Shake It is a really good game. The main quest is a bit easy, but the achievments provide a real challenge if your a seasoned platforming fan. I've heard Klonoa is good but really short, and Muramasa is great, if a little repetitive.

Don't forget about DK: Jungle Beat (classic 2-D platformer). A fantastic Gamecube remake and it's the cheapest of all of them.

Muramasa is great and a lot of fun, but its not a full platformer but out of the 3 you mentioned Muramasa was the best in my opinion (Not Played Klonoa.)

I'll say Klonoa because I've played that one. The bonus challenges give a good challenge, however; the game's more 2.5D. You might not get that same feeling of "3D never happened" with this game as with the others.

Welcome to Ninetendo|Life, and as for you question, well I have Wario Land Shake it, and while it's a good game, put up against Muramasa I would hands down get Muramasa. I hear it's a very good game and I am anxiously waiting for it to be released here in the States...which isn't too far away. Also the reason I can say get Mramasa is I have played both of Vanilla Software's games on the PS2 (Odin Sphere, and GrimGrimoire and loved them both).

I am also going to be picking up Klonoa soon as well.

I haven't played WarioLand: Shake It but I do own Klonoa and Muramasa. They are both excellent games! As much as I enjoy Klonoa I am going to have to give the edge(no sword pun intended) to Muramasa but you can't go wrong with either game really.

I own all three games. But, I have not played Klonoa yet. I bought Muramasa:The Demon Blade today and I played it for a couple of hours, and it is awesome. It is a combination of 2D sidescrolling and action RPG gameplay. It is certainly unique, and the 2D graphics are amazing. If you cannot buy Muramasa for some reason, then your second choice should be Wario Land:Shake It!!. I completed Wario Land:Shake It!!, and it is a great platformer. Still, I think Muramasa is the best choice.

You are a cool bunch of gamers, I appreciate the time you have taken to assist with my dilemma.
It was a little bit daft of me to ask this question, before Muramasa is even out.
Am I right in thinking that Muramasa's gameplay is more fighting/ action orientated, than Odin Sphere (action RPG), and more obviously, GrimGrimoire (RTS)? ( @motang post 14 )
Here is your input so far:
Muramasa= 8 recommendations.
Wario Land= 4 votes.
Klonoa= 2 people backing it.
Cheers @Trevor_Fox (post 12) for the astute consideration of the visual difference between 2 & 2.5D.
Thanks @Kid_A (post 7) , I will buy Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat some day to experience its more traditional controls, but I already have it and the bongos for GameCube to play, so it is not a priority just yet.

Played all 3. I have completed everything but Muramasa.

If your looking more platformer then go with Wario, but if you want action/rpg go Muramasa. Don't get Klonoa, its not bad but it isn't special either. The last couple levels are just annoying and the story/voice/presentation in general is awful. The best portion of it is the 2.5D thing they did.

Good luck, I think you'd be pretty happy with Muramasa or Wario. Both great.

I only have Klonoa but I intend on getting Wario Land at some point. And to be perfectly honest I have no interest Muramasa. I can't really make a "good" suggestion because I have only played Klonoa but I guess I can rant about Klonoa for a bit.

Klonoa is a good platformer and its fairly different. It is 2.5D and it doesn't pretend to be just a 2D platformer which makes for some interesting gameplay. There are parts where you have to throw enemies into the foreground and background for instance. The other interesting mechanic has already been mentioned and its kinda like a more refined version of "abandoning Yoshi". On top of that its a very good looking game and its in full widescreen (unlike Wario Land).

Currently I would say its one of the best 2D platformers I have played on the system..... although I am sure it will be knocked down a few notches when New Super Mario Bros Wii comes out.

@DAaaMan64
you do know that you can change the language to Phantomile? Do that and the voiceovers are far less annoying
