though the wii and nintendo's products have always tried to explore the intuitive and revolutionary side of gaming I'm afraid now that every console following in there motion control footsteps means developers will see the ability of the same such revolutionary ideas for higher, more powerful, next gen consoles such as the ps3 or xbox360.leaving our loving "revolutionary" but weak console to become a redunt lifeless machine.

Did the DS wither away when some competition—and I use the word very loosely—showed up? Exactly...

It's not really about who's hoping to cash in on the innovator's concept, now is it? Nintendo has said that as far as motion controls are concerned, they're in it for the long haul; whether or not the other two are going to be that dedicated remains to be seen (though, I highly doubt it). Hell, most of the other two consoles' "hardcore" fans are vehemently against motion controls and label them and the Wii as "gimmicky"; as far as I'm concerned, this is just the competition's attempt at vying for the attention of the non-gamer demographic that has been pivotal to the Wii's smashing success...

My two cents...

Have you ever read "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? If not, then you should go read it. Other than being a well-written and humorously awesome book, it will also show you an insight on completely motion controlled systems.

Well, it won't become redundant and lifeless in my house, have you seen how many games are being released this year? I imagine 2011 will be strong also. The Wii isn't going anywhere and I'm certain that at some point in the next two years Nintendo will again announce something 'new', which will steal any thunder gained by the motion control experiments on other platforms. But, even if I am wrong and they just announce a Wii+ for the next generation, Nintendo's understanding of a gamer's needs will always keep them afloat.

Personally, whilst I'm sure they will be technically impressive, I seriously doubt S&M will be able to translate that into any kind of fun. Plus, that crowd of gamers who make up the PS3/360 fanbase? I'll be very surprised if they respond to motion control. Very!

The news of Nintendo's demise have been greatly exaggerated.

Metroid_Fan and Machu hit the nail on the head. The PS360 is not a family-oriented/family-friendly system, their price range alone has ensured that. Trying to bring motion controls to the PS360 will not impress the owners who style themselves as "hardcore", and as mentioned the price range will ensure that family-oriented gamers will continue to flock to the Wii.

I'm still trying to figure out how Natal is going to register a trigger pull ... is it so sensitive that it can sense a single finger twitch?

Errrrrm, by that time won't there be a "Wii 2" anyway?!

Won't PS3 and Xbox try and cash in on party games thus alienating their exclusionist hardcore?!

You forget one thing: the Wii is supported by Nintendo. The Gamecube didn't die out, so the Wii isn't going anywhere soon

And what do you mean by "next gen" consoles? The PS3 and 360 are current gen consoles

Sure, some of the PS360 fanboys will get online and whine like little girls, but they won't forsake their consoles in protestation. I doubt PS360 will see a huge bump in sales for family-oriented games and Nintendo will continue to lead the field in this area.

Not only will they whine, the 360 and PS3 fanboys will use the party games as ammo against each other in their neverending flame war. For example, when a crappy party title gets released on the 360, the PS3 fanboys will say "Haha, crapbox fanboys, looks like you got more crap for your crapbox n00bs. PS3 rulzzzzz!!!"

It's just Sony and Microsoft playing catch up. In sales terms they won't see Nintendo for dust this generation; rather, they just want to grab a share of the market that's been created by motion control games. They'll still continue to cater to the eye candy FPS crowd as well, as they know that they can get solid sales there where those sort of games on the Wii tend to struggle a bit, but they've got to try to offer at least something to every kind of gamer.

As far as a next generation Nintendo console goes, I think it'll have HD support, but only because that'll be a lot cheaper and less risky to implement than it was four years ago; plus the take-up of HD TV sets is much higher now too. I'm sure that they'll keep trying to extend their edge with controllers too; motion plus ought to come as standard and perhaps a classic controller too. Much though motion controls have improved a lot of games, they're plainly superfluous for others.

Anyway, we're surely talking 2012 at the earliest and I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo are trialling some truly radical new ideas that make the design of the Wii-mote seem positively conservative. In the meantime, the Wii has surely got at least a couple of good years left in it yet; most consoles have seen their very best games in the period about 3-5 years after launch and we're just entering into that now. Good times.

well this is the predictions of some and maybe why theyve got a fairly good early year line up this year.
my concern for ninty fans is that if?E3 does show anything besides zelda wii?and ninty fans calling it the best ever E3,then it'll look bleak.
I believe ninty have a next console ready but ninty will see how it goes this year, and next year wii 2 will be shown or even released with even a zelda wii 2 release(wait until E3)
I myself believe ninty can make awsome games but im really waiting for a more powerful upto date spec so i can have next gen graphics and spoilt for multiplatform hardcore gaming in HD and if rumour true'BLU-RAY'.

here is a big part of the problem for the ps3 and xbox 360. Consider the wii its sold 68 million wiis, but only 10 million or so WM+ (and thats with many people buying 2-4. Not 10 million different consoles worth of WM+). The buy in price for WM+ is only the cost of a game with a pack-in $50 for WS2 and $60 for one of the other 2 launch games. Now consider something like natal, it includes high definition cameras and other expensive techs in it. If it has a higher buy in cost, on a console with a smaller install base, with an install base that has less interest in motion controls-- it becomes much less of a threat. Similar situation with ps3. I can't imagine natal or arc catching on in any significant way--especially on the AAA, hardcore, FPS's that the consoles thrive on.

Just my 2 cents.

The 360 Arcade is considerably cheaper than the Wii.

Microsoft have said they're aiming for Natal to be under £50.

We'll see what E3 brings, but it's naive to think that Microsoft couldn't potentially take away some of the Wii's family market with Natal. The novelty of it will be hugely attractive to parents, and the chances are their kids will be more interested in owning a 360 than a Wii.

The PS3 won't challenge the family-oriented market with its high price point, but the technology seems to be better than M+. In the hands of the right developers, I reckon we'll see better motion controlled games than Red Steel 2.

None of this matters to me as I don't particularly like motion controls anyway, I play the Wii for its traditional games.

My only hope is that all 3 lose their novelty and die out so we can stop this stupid motion control phase. I'd rather have a traditional controller anyways.

I'm not sure why you think the family orientated market would want the unreliable hardware of microsoft over nintendo; especially since nintendo have had almost unbelieveable success in that market with the ds and wii. Wierd.

"They say video games are bad for you? That's what they said about rock n' roll."

shake_zula

The family oriented market has no idea whatsoever about which hardware is the more reliable, and I explained why I think they could prefer it. It's cheaper and their kids will prefer it.

It's going to make the third party state even worse, it really says something that all the PS3 has to do to get ports is make a Wiimote clone when the Wii was ignored despite outselling both its competitors combined.

I just hope the smaller devs don't abandon the platform, they've been putting the most effort in.

LOL. Really? Amazon is selling the Arcade for the same price as the Wii. If you go elsewhere, you may find it for a bit cheaper. However I wouldn't consider $20 "considerably cheaper".

Second, an XBOX360 Arcade is essentially a useless console. You need to pay another $100 to get a mere 60GB drive in there, which is necessary for online play for a large portion of their lineup.

So no, the XBOX360 Arcade is not considerably cheaper than the Wii. Nice try though.
