Since the topic about the 4.3 update was closed I thought I'd start another one about the updates in general. No discussion of homebrew please as it seems to be against site rules and will get the topic locked.

So is nintendo ever gonna actually add some new features? They rarely release an update and when they do its just to get rid of unofficial software. Also, if you want to continue to use the shop channel you are required to update so I think some complaining about it is justified. At least do something like make wiiware and vc load off sd quicker or allow external hard drives to be used as storage.

Well I'm not updating due to what it removes.

I'm wondering if they are planning any channel updates or new channels.

Hm hmm...

As far as I, and everyone else that doesn't work with Nintendo knows, there are no plans for new channels.

Unless you count Wii no Ma, which I'm not sure if it's coming or not...

Let me quote myself:

"There's also something I like to say about Wii-updates: please people, don't get too excited. Wii-updates can only do small things. The SD-card menu was a small update. It was basically a shortcut of things you could have done before the update. It looked big, but there weren't very many changes. When I see all of you talking about things like 'Home menu in GC games', 'No health and safey screen', 'Update for all WiiWare/VC games' I can think only one thing: Fairytales. In order to make these changes, EVERY SINGLE GAME needs to be updated. And as some may know: Wii (and GC) disc games CAN'T be updated. WiiWare and VC can be updated, but I think that would be too much work for Nintendo.

So there can't be done much useful with an update. Besides the usefulness for a user, there is only one thing left an update is useful for: anti-piracy. I think everyone can remember update 4.2. This was a VERY BIG update. But there was a workaround within 24 hours.

So can you see the result? There isn't very much left to do for a future update. That is probably why it is taking so long for Nintendo to make the next update."

While you are right that the sd card menu is kind of just a shortcut it was still quite a big thing and MUCH faster and easier than doing things manually.

Nothing huge can be done but there are reasonable things that can be done. The many things hackers have accomplished is proof of that. Dvd support is possible for one thing. It also seems technically possible to make a download netflix channel instead of using the disc.

Its just a bit frustrating knowing that there still can be improvements, even minor ones, and nintendo doesn't seem to care about that yet still forces updates that they claim has "behind the scenes" improvements. I understand at least trying to deter people from using unofficial software but it would be nice if you got at least something minor for updating. Now all you get is stuff removed and access back to the shop channel.

Cause its fun to complain. I don't have to like everything nintendo does.

But hackers aren't providing those services legally in most cases.

To turn the Wii into a DVD player properly would require codec licensing fees to be paid for every console - maybe Nintendo could offer an optional DVD Channel download through the Wii Shop Channel to only pay the fee for Wii consoles making use of the feature, but I'm not even certain about that. Either way there would be a big expense associated with a feature that a relatively small number of people want that would put extra wear on the hardware. Pretty hard to justify if you ask me.

I'm also quite sure the reason there isn't a downloadable Netflix Channel instead relying on discs is because of an exclusive contract between Microsoft and Netflix. This isn't something Nintendo can just "fix" or that Netflix can change at this point. Later on things might be different.

If there was any legitimate reason to install homebrew on Wii, I would. I'm not opposed to homebrew at all despite hating piracy and the cavalier attitudes usually flaunted by those who support piracy. Sadly, the only true justification I could find for installing homebrew on Wii was playing import games... and even that is a questionable choice. (Importing an actual console is a better option if you can't live without games from other regions.)

Gamers have grown a sense of entitlement far beyond what is reasonable... and it's never on display more than when discussions about updates and homebrew come into play.

at first: why should it load quicker? i takes what for the biggest files?....15....20 seconds? fast enough for the mojority of people not to complain about.

second: external hard drive? what for dude, what for?
you were talking about the removal of "unofficial software" earlier on...i think we all kow what you are talking about. and with this software you can use an external hard drive. and what are you gonna store one that big amount free space....
so SD-Card is allready bid and fast enough for the wii.

PS: complaining is no fun

For clarification, I'm not against talking about what features would be neat additions or improvements. Obviously when you look at the wishlist thread that was open before, there are some cool things that could still be done and people have fun talking about what they hope might change in the future.

It's just when people act like Nintendo owes them something -- especially when they use that as a justification for illegal and/or immoral choices -- that grinds my gears.

Well, the 4.3 update did something great for me, so I cannot complain.

I was looking at another posting of the Wii back to Nintendo and facing the possibility of a system format and losing some precious non-back-uppable save files for games with Wi-Fi content due to chronic "system files corrupted" messages which also meant a lot of apps with Wi-Fi didn't work properly: I couldn't send Miis or messages; update News or Weather channels, etc.

After the 4.3 update the problem appears to be totally resolved. I sent some Miis to Sean007 and a message to Darren@NL and I've not seen the error message since. So remember folks, even if there doesn't appear to be any "value add," if you're having a software issue, the system update may be able to sort your problem without resorting to drastic measures (also potentially helpful if you've borked your system due to an attempted softhack of it)!

@sean well its nice that the update did something good for someone. Glad your wii is up and running fully again.

Anyway, I don't think nintendo owes me anything. When I see people get all up in arms about not getting what they want from weekly updates I get a bit annoyed too. Saying I would like updates to actually update something is not the same as "Nintendo owes me new features".

@ejamer I forgot about the licensing stuff with dvd support but that was just an example.

I was just trying to have a topic to discuss the updates in general, what they have provided, and what they could provide. I don't see any reason for hostility for that. External drive support was just another example of a possibility and definitely not trying to condone piracy. I was thinking more along the lines of flash drive support anyway like for photos and such. Maybe its because I like linux and open software but I like having multiple ways of doing things even if not really needed.

Another feature or change I'd like is having access to the weather and news channels even when you have wiiconnect off.

Agreed. I keep WiiConnect on, but they won't work unless you have both that and standby active, which really annoys me. I've given up and have standby enabled and just power the system off by holding down the button for the red light now. I don't use those channels on the Japanese Wii, so that one is staying with standby off.

Please don't think I was ranting about you - that wasn't the intent at all. Sometimes it's just really cathartic to let a good rant out, but I didn't mean to derail the thread so badly.

I totally agree about how annoying it is for the weather and news channel. That, among other things, would be a great change and is a terrific suggestion! I'm also totally in favor of releasing a DVD Channel through the Wii Shop Channel. The licensing fee can't be that much (probably $5 or less) and it's not like Nintendo would have to make much effort to put it out there. There are probably just not interested in dealing with the small number of repairs required for the extra laser usage...

Well, $5 or less would equal many millions of dollars they otherwise would keep for themselves - why give it away for a feature that the overwhelming majority of users won't need or demand?

Nintendo could do a paid dvd channel like they originally did with the internet channel and make it 500 points. Its not something that most people would need but I'm sure there are some that would appreciate having the option especially if their normal dvd player breaks or something.

@ejamer thanks for clearing that up. I'd also agree about the entitled behavior. It seems to go along with fanatic fans that feel nintendo owes them for their support and so they have to release the game they want now and the way they want OR ELSE. With me there are certain things I'd like but if nintendo doesn't do them I'm not gonna take it personally or threaten piracy in response.

Nintendo has already mentioned this, but they did not put a DVD player in the Wii as it would burn out the lens too quickly.

DVD Channel = No dual-layered games.

I would just like to see an overhaul to the Mii Channel with some added customization. Maybe update the flash player on the Internet Channel to version 10. Maybe add some new features that are beyond what I can think up at the moment.
