That's the bubble room 90's Gamer is talking about. I just got out of there with the speed booster, but now with the power bombs I have to go back. You're catching up, irken!

Indeed! We should be done fairly soon hopefully

Yeah do you want me to wait for you to catch up? Or should we just go along at our own paces and see what happens? School is starting soon and then I won't have any time to play it.

Just go on without me, I'll catch up this weekend.

Man, a thread can really grow when you don't turn on your computer for a week . . .

Romulux, exactly how much preparation goes into such a fast run like that?

i just watched some speed run videos and thought it would be fun to try it myself. i spent a few minutes trying to figure out how the hell they do some of those tricks, otherwise it's just running through as fast as you can from memory. i used save stations two or three times, because i'm not good enough to do everything well in one go.

i think the world record is 27 minutes or so, so even though i think my time is pretty good, someone out there could beat the game and have a cup of tea or two before i finish. it's extremely humbling to watch those runs... check the wall jumps at 6:30

I don't think that's a legit speedrun. IIRC, TAS stands for something like Technology Aided Speedrun, i.e. it's using tricks and shortcuts you can only pull off on an emulator, so as awesome as that run is, it's not human skill alone.

Sorry, to double-post, but my copy of Zero Mission glitched out and doesn't work anymore. Man am I sad.

That is just horrible. I think Zero Mission may be my favorite Metroid ever (although when I type something like that my SM cart gives me a hurt look). Easiest bomb-jump timing in any 2D Metroid—you can even bomb jump diagonally. And after playing that, I always wish there could've been a Power Grip in Super Metroid.

Super Metroid is glorious, absolutely, but I think more than any of them it becomes less enjoyable to play over time. My copy can give me sad faces all it wants. I love the GBA games, and I really enjoy the original, too, though you've got to be in a good mood to set out and conquer that beast.

On the topic of TAS, they are amazing to watch, but as far as records go, I'm not interested in them.

Come on, friends,
To the bear arcades again.

Impossible how so? Getting to it should be a breeze if you've got grappling hook and ice beam, i.e. you're not sequence breaking.

It's possible without Grappling Hook, but very tough. You shouldn't get it right now.

Dude, I am a very good SM player and on my replay a few weeks ago I figured I'd get the scope without the grapple. Adam's right; it's tough. I was able to do it, but it wasn't easy.

Anytime you see those grappling blocks the game designer's wanted you to have the grappling beam to get past there. Granted, there are tons of ways to get around most grappling blocks, but it's sequence breaking. NTTAWWT, but you should probably beat the game the way it was meant to be beat first.

Me neither. After a while I decided to put it down and couldn't get myself to pick it up again.

Well if I actually owned the game, I probably would have beaten it by now. But I've only played it on a friend's Wii.

.... or something like that.

Jesper

Hi, guys. I'm playing through Super Metroid for the first time now. I bought the Prime Trilogy when I bought a Wii, and I've been an avid gamer since the 80's, so I love playing the 'classics' of video gaming. Coming from Commodore, then PC, it's great to also see the Nintendo side of gaming history. I can also see where a lot of the Commodore games got their inspiration. For example, Super Metroid seems to have been a major influence on the game Sacred Armour of Antiriad.

Right now I'm kinda stuck for what to do in Super Metroid; haven't gotten a new upgrade in a while. I got into the wrecked ship and defeated the boss there, but I have a feeling I'm doing the game backwards from what was intended by the designers, since I got into the wrecked ship from beneath, and I still don't have the grappling hook. So far, I've defeated the plant, Kraid and Crocomire, and now, yesterday, Phantoon, and that's it. Any clues as to where I should go now?

Heh, my first time through the game I decided to brave it through the spikes without the grappling hook.
This time I just skipped it altogether.
This playthrough took 2 days, and around 2:34 game-time to complete - I spent too much of this time in Maridia, getting lost.

Now I'm on Metroid, and I wasted way too much time exploring Kraid's hideout.
I decided I would go ahead and move on to Norfair, and in the span of only about an hour, acquired the Ice Beam, High Jump, Wave Beam, Screw Attack, 2 energy tanks, and several missile expansions. All that's left is the Varia suit, beating Kraid and Ridley, and acquiring the 5th energy tank in Kraid's Lair (I already found it in there, just couldn't grab it).
And of course, Tourian.

@Jesper: You need to grab the Gravity Suit. It's close by. Then you'll be able to explore Maridia. Once there, find and defeat Draygon.

romulux

how'd you get into the wrecked ship if you didn't use the grapple beam? the only ways i know of are shinesparking or bomb jumping over the water, which are really hard to pull off even if you're not a beginner.

but yeah, like notenoughgolds said, what you need is in the ship area, so explore there a little more.

Now that I think about it, I was doing some fairly major sequence breaking that run, so I probably only had a couple of energy tanks and no Varia. I only pick it up for the 100%. Not that I got 100% that run.

I remember having defeated the Wrecked Ship guardian on my very first try.
