Not bad, but I was averaging around 175 each time on Melty Monster, and I was able to beat it nearly every time. I was trying to beat he game with as few deaths as possible. I ended up dying 101 times, with most of those being on the 242nd star or on the flip flop galaxy. Either way, this was one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm so glad that I picked it up on launch day. Easily one of the best of all time.
Okay...So I beat the grandmaster galaxy and got the comet coin but no comet has appeared. What's the deal?
Got to collect 9999 star bits and store them in Toad's bank. Then a comet will come. Stupid right? Well it's true.
Yep. I had to play Melty Monster Star 2 over and over for around an hour to get 9999 starbits, but it was all worth it!
Twisty Trials is the best for star bits imo. About 89 star bits in that level, with 2 1UPs each time. It should take about 40 seconds or so for each set of 89 star bits, then just jump off the edge when you have them all, and repeat. So, for less than a minute of work, you get 1.89 1UPs and 89 star bits. I started this with ~1200 star bits needed and had them all in less than 10 minutes.
Edit: To those wishing to get 120 stars before they beat the game for the first time... it's not even remotely possible.
The last star in the game is just unreasonably hard. Even with 2 people it's outrageous. Got to the last section only to get hit by a hammer brother on the last platform...anger...frustration...humiliation

so far i've got 190 stars. I have found the green stars to be quite easy especially when as you enter the galaxy the camera sweeps over the galaxy and shows you some of the green stars. From what i've heard is there another galaxy in world S - after the flip one (awesome level) when you get all the green stars?

Yep! And without saying too much, it's the hardest level I've ever played in a Mario game.

If you can get to the last level with 3 clouds (or even 2) it makes it MUCH easier! That way you can just run by the first two sets of hammer brothers, and then long jump all the way to the final platform. This is what I did, and it wasn't too bad really.

That's not a bad bit of advice! I was using my clouds to skip the majority of the flipswitch/laser circle bit. But that's a good idea. Thanks for the tip.

There are star blocks on the map. Just point at them and it'll tell you how many stars are needed.

Hey forum! Im busy here playing Super Mario Galaxy 2, like all of you! Its great! I have beat bowser and am up to 106 stars and then I stopped and said to myself "hmm... I'm really enjoying this and wouldnt really mind starting it again without going on further" and I did just that! but this time round I recorded my playthrough in HD and am currently uploading it to youtube!
