Is LTTP better than Zelda II? In my opinion, yes. But Zelda II is also a great game in its own rights, and since that's what bonii was asking about, that's what I'll respond to.
Yes, I think you should get Zelda II. I definitely love the leveling up elements that were added in, as well as trying to figure out where to go and what to do. MetalMario said it best - "I found it was very good. It starts off a little daunting, but if you keep at it, you might really enjoy it."

Threads like these have an official format, you know. The thread title should be "Should I*'ll* get Zelda II?" And yes, you should. The people claiming that it sucks or that it's vastly inferior to the rest of the series have either not played it, or played it until it was too hard for them and quit. Zelda II was my best gaming experience this year and was instantly vaulted to my #2 Zelda spot on completion (right behind Majora's Mask).
... actually the spot of best gaming experience of the year is tough. tbh it's a toss-up between Zelda II, Ys Book I & II, Super Metroid, and Metroid Prime Trilogy
Look Man Zelda 2 not only one of My Favorite Zelda Game's of all Time it is also one of My Favorite Games of all Time. all though it is Different from any other Zelda Games it is still--------------- one heck of an adventure I do Warn you though Zelda 2 is possibly the Hardest Zelda Game ever Created like a Super Mario Game you start off with 3 Lives and your Main Goal is to Survive and beat all the unbearable Dungeons to finally Beat the Game if you don't like Hard Games then this Game is not for you but as a Zelda Fan I still think A Link to The Past is the Better Zelda Game
At first I was shocked at how bad Zelda II was and I quit playing it. For some reason I started playing it again about a year ago and I stuck with it, leveled up a bit and beat the first dungeon. Since then I was hooked and couldn't stop 'til I got to the last dungeon and quit because it was ridiculously hard to even get to the last dungeon, let alone beat it. The game is well worth your money, though. Buy it!
If you get to the last dungeon, you can restart at its entrance when you get game over. So as long as you can get to it once, it's not a big deal. Expect to spend a lot of time trying to find your way out though. That temple is enormous in comparison with previous levels with a ton more secrets and dead ends, and those bird knight things are a real pain.
