I know there's a lot of shoot-em-ups on the VC so I was hoping some of you would be able to help me find the right one for me (I know there's threads about these already but no search feature on these forums).

Anyway I basically want one that is a side-scroller only - left to right type thing. I used to own two games on the Commodore 64 that I used to love playing - Salamander and the ship levels from Turrican 2. Got such fond memories I really want to play something similar. I think there's some games from the Salamander series on VC but they don't seem to be what I'm looking for. I may have overlooked some so a bit of advice would be much appreciated - don't want to get the wrong one.

Knux

Gradius II, it is such an easy game.

Life Force is Salamander is Life Force, and the NES Life Force is on the VC.
It's not completely left-to-right, though, but neither was the C64 version, I guess you simply never made it to the top-down levels.

For the absolute best, however, go for Lords of Thunder.

R-Type (Turbografx-16 version).

For something a bit different I'd try Fantasy Zone (Master System) or the superior sequel Fantasy Zone II (Mega Drive). Both are awesome games and offer a slightly different take on the genre. Number 2 has great visuals too.Though the first may have that Commodore 64 vibe that you like.

EDIT: you should check out the reviews of these games on NL to see if it would be your kind of thing.

What's this bit for again?

the_shpydar

Definitely pick up Lifeforce/Salamander. One of the best all time. Graidus III is also a good choice; maybe Gradius ReBirth too.

The Shpydarloggery
She-Ra is awesome. If you believe otherwise, you are clearly wrong.
Urban Champion is GLORIOUS.

Super Fantasy Zone really is excellent, though not quite as awesome as Defender, which it takes inspiration from in control/presentation.

I'll second R-TYPE. I have the PC Engine versions of Salamander, Gradius, Gradius II and they're pretty good. I also rate Gradius III (Super Famicom/SNES), though I wish it was also PC Engine because I'm funny that way.

Namco's Ordyne should also get a look in (VCA in Japan/PC Engine elsewhere).

Ironclad for Neo Geo is a great side-scrolling shooter that changes things up a bit, but it'll cost you more than these other games.

You probably don't have access to the Japanese Wii shop, but if so Space Manbow for MSX is a treat and the stealth VC game in WiiWare, Phalanx, is awesome.

For 800pts you can try Musha which NL gave a 9/10 or
For 600pts you can try Blazing Lazers (Gunhed in Japan) which NL gave an 8/10 or

Just giving him some options... Maybe he has never tried a vertical shooter. Maybe he would really love em. Maybe since he has such fond memories of horizontal shooters he never got around to trying the vertical genre. All I'm doing is giving him options. If everyone responds with the same, try Lifeforce or R-Type how would he ever be exposed to some great games that are sooooo close to being what he is looking for? If only one person would just post a comprehensive list of vertical shooters.

I must come off as a real dick on this forum, I'm not trying to... five more minutes and this thread is shut down

I've played plenty of vertical shooters - infact they're all I have. I'm an avid player of Ikaruga for a start. I'm looking at the side scroller ones for nostalgia.

I didn't realise Lifeforce is Salamander! That's probably the one I should get then as I've definately played it before and enjoyed it. Also didn't realise that it has vertical levels - guess I never got that far but it doesn't mean I wont get it since this is actually the title I used to play many years ago.

I think I'll check out some videos of the Gradius games before I buy, though - they look pretty good. R-Type seems a bit slow for my liking though.

Haha actually I've been looking at Gradius Rebirth on Youtube. I looks like it has a Salamander themed stage, better graphics, all horizontal stages etc - however it has quite a poor review on here. Is it really that bad? It does look a little short from the videos - how long does it take to finish it on average?

don`t forget that there is always space harrier (VCA, master system) and space harrier 2 (mega drive/genesis) in the wii shop.

The VC version is still Blazing Lazers in Japan, because Gunhed was a licensed property.

Those aren't side-scrollers, and really, they are best forgotten. Get Sin & Punishment 2 instead if you want that kind of game, seriously.
