I haven't played SMW before, but I can't see myself ever playing a 2D Mario game without multiplayer again. NSMB Wii multiplayer is the most fun I've ever had with a video game.
@Adam: The core Mario experience, I believe, is great platforming, brilliant level design, catchy music, and tons of hidden secrets. Even from the very first Super Mario on the NES, all of these things have been present. On the NES, Super Mario Bros. had geat music, wonderfully designed levels, gave a great platforming challenge, and was even filled with secrets like all of the warp zones. Yoshi's Island took all of these aspects and brought them to a new level. Yoshi's Island was full of secrets to find (it was also the first Mario game to introduce the Red Coins that would be used in Super Mario 64), the music was pheonomenally catchy, the level design was some of the best ever seen in a Mario game, and the platforming was quite challenging, especially if you were trying to get everything. So, that's what I mean by the core Mario experience.

Both are good games with pros and cons, but I wouldn't put one over the other.
NSMBW is a great platformer that totally fulfills the higher now a day standards; SMW set up some of those standards, as SMB set the most basic platformer standards. Nintendo improves those standards with every Mario game, but, in fact, they've never completely repeated the formula, as an example: Mario has been able to fly since SMB3 but never in the same way; so each individual Mario game is unique, and holds an special something that can't and won't be found on any other Mario game; for me the special thing on SMB3, is what I hold dearest, there are no other game like that, hence, for me it's the "best" Mario game.
In a nutshell, there is not a best Mario game, just the latest Mario game, which will probably rise platforming standards, and different tastes .

Gamergod, gotcha. I figured you meant some actual gameplay mechanics, which are what I consider to be the core of a game, while I'd call what you describe more the "spirit" of the game. Tomato, tomahto. Thanks for clearing that up.
